Ms. Carney was asked what her favorite quote was and she said, Success is achieved and maintained by those who try and keep trying. She learned this quote from her art teachers who said it as she was growing up. When students ask for help Ms. Carney will ask them if they tried first. So she still uses it in her everyday life. She explained, It s easy to do it (tasks) for someone but then that person will never learn how to do it. This quote was invented by W. Clement Stone who was a business man. He became successful when he donated millions of dollars to charity.
Page 2 National Native American Heritage Month by Dontae Johnson November is National American Indian Heritage Month. National American Indian Heritage Month is a month set aside to honor American Indians. In 1990 President George H. W. Bush approved a resolution designating November National American Indian Heritage Month. Other proclamations under that name have been issued each year since 1994. The first American Indian Day was declared on the second Saturday in May in 1916 by the governor of New York. A year before this proclamation, Red Fox James a Blackfoot Indian rode horse back from state to state searching for approval for a day to honor Indians. Several states have declared Columbus Day as Native American Day but currently it is not recognized as a national legal holiday. Junior High Basketball By JJ Herriford Are you excited about this year s JH high basketball team? You should be! They practiced hard for their first game and couldn t wait to show what they could do on the court. The jr. high boys basketball coach is Mr. Presley and there are 14 players on the team. The JH high girls basketball coach is Mr. Harter and there are 9 players on the team. The first game was on October 24 and the team battled the Glasgow Yellowjackets. The game ended with a score of 29-36. We lost, but we were able to get a win against New Franklin with a score of 41-20! The team then played against Madison with a score of 28-13! The boys have won two games and lost one so far. On October 24 the girls lost against the Glasgow Yellowjackets with a score of 32-2. They also unfortunately lost against New Franklin with a score of 27-3. While the girls have lost the first two games they have been practicing hard. If you haven t had the chance yet to see the Jr. High Wildcats put their skills to work on the court there are many more chances left. So, check out the News to Remember section of this newsletter for scheduled game and mark your calendars, because you don t want to miss the Jr. High Wildcats battle other schools on the basketball court! Check-out Procedures Sometimes when you re at school you might not be feeling well, so where do you go and who do you contact? Just as a reminder, here are the proper procedures for checking out when sick. First you need to ask your teacher permission to go see Mrs. Pulliam, Administrative Health Assistant. If she is not in her office then go to the elementary office to see Mrs. Allen. Once you get to either place they will take your temperature. If you are not running a fever or vomiting you will be sent back to class. If you are running a fever or vomiting Mrs. Pulliam or Mrs. Allen will call your parents and have them come check you out of school. You are not to text your parents to have them come get you from school. When asked about consequences for not following the proper procedure to go home, Ms. Drummond stated, If a student does not follow the proper procedures to go home, they will be considered truant and the handbook will be followed for consequences. So, if you are not feeling well at school be sure to follow these procedures in order to go home. Musical Concerts by JJ Herriford The band and choir concert was held on October 13, 2016. This year s band director is Ms. Gayle Stevens and the choir director is Mr. Stephen Meyer. The choir was excited and nervous, but it all worked out and they did excellent! Mr. Meyer was very proud of the choir s performance. The band also performed and they did great! Mrs. Stevens was really pleased on how the band performed. Altogether, the concert was fabulous and both directors hope that their groups will continue to progress. If you enjoyed this concert or were unable to attend than get ready for the winter concert in December!
Page 3 Severe Weather by Madelyn Miller Natural disaster can strike at any given moment if you want to make sure you are safe, I will show you some rules! Rule #1: Create a Family Disaster Plan! Meet with your family and discuss why you need to prepare for severe weather and natural disasters. Discuss what disasters could happen and find what to do in each case that may or may not come. Rule #2 Pick Places to Meet! If there is a fire, go outside away from the area at a safe distance! Outside your neighborhood if you are asked to evacuate the premises. Choose a person out of area it will or might be easier to text or call long distance if the local phone services are over loaded or out of order. Rule #3 Choose Multiple Places to go when needed! You may choose where to go, a hotel/motel a friends or families house or even an evacuation shelter if necessary. Practice evacuating the house at least 2x a year. Plan ahead for your pets (if you do not have any ignore this) you may want to get an animal friendly hotel if so. If you would like to learn more about this please go to this website. It has many useful safety tips and another website for how to Careers for Years by Gracelyn Jacobs Did you go to Careers for Years? It was a great event that had many participants. The purpose of Careers for Years was to give Slater School District students the opportunity to see a lot of different job opportunities. There were various types of jobs that were represented during the event. Students were able to see various public service jobs, as well as agriculturally based jobs. Many of the jobs that students were able to explore require college degrees, but students were also able to explore jobs that require no college or training to those that require technical school degrees. The school district decided this was a great opportunity to hold a career fair for all of the students and families in the district and hope to continue this event in future years. A lot of students and parents, grades PreK-12 th grade, attended the career fair. There were approximately 150 students that attended the career fair. The teachers and principals were very pleased with the turn out and would like to thank all the staff members and participants for helping to make the event a success. Junior High Fall Dance by Elizabeth Landreth The 2016 Slater JH Fall Dance was held Friday, October 21, in the school cafeteria. There were free snacks, and drinks for sale outside the cafeteria for everyone to enjoy. The fee for getting in was $2.00 or three cans of food. All the food was donated to the local Food Pantry. There was tons of music and dancing, and a lot of fun for everyone! We hope you come to the next Slater JH Dance and enjoy the music, dancing, and the fun!
Page 4 Student Expectations by Elizabeth Landreth Expectations are very important because if students follow them it will keep them safe and help students learn more in the classroom. It is important for everyone to understand that expectations are not always focused on behavior but also on academics. So students always need to remember to follow the expectations at all times. Overall Ms. Drummond says in regard to academic expectations, I am very pleased with students academically. I would like to see everyone continue to push themselves to their fullest potential when learning. Students need to remember to show up to classes and school on time. It is also important to remember to follow the classroom expectations and only use phones when the teacher gives permission to students in the classroom. Students should always remember to be quiet in the hallways and treat both teachers and classmates with respect. We all need to follow these expectations so we can be safe and continue to grow as learners! Page 5 Halloween By Aubry Meyer Halloween is a time of year when most people dress up and go Trick-or- Treating or have Halloween parties. This year Slater did something called Trunkor-Treat on Main Street, as well as the traditional door-to-door Trick-or- Treating. Trunk-or-Treating is when children go car to car collecting candy. This year the Slater Schools also allowed costumes, so they had a costume contest for the Jr.High and High School students. The rules were no masks that cover your face, no gore/blood, no weapons (even if they are fake), no terrorism related costumes, and no vulgar attire (face paints and hair colors were allowed). The contest categories were Pairs, Funniest, Most Original, and Most Effort. The winners were Pairs- Ciara Meyer and Abby, Funniest-Aidan Pugh, Most Effort-Tiana Yates, Most Original- Madisyn Beeler and Justyce Brooks, and Most Creative-the senior girls. Staff Recipe Chocolate Cream Cheese Cupcakes (Submitted by Mrs. Fry) 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese softened 1 egg, slightly beaten 1/3 cup sugar 1 pinch salt 1 (6 ounce) package chocolate chips 1 cup sugar 1 ½ cups flour ¼ cup cocoa 1 teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt 1 cup oil 1 tablespoon vinegar Now this is how so makes it. In a bowl, combine first four ingredients. All chocolate chips and set aside. Mix remaining ingredients well. Fill muffin tins, lined with paper cups 1/3 to ½ full with this mixture. Drop a large spoonful of cheese mixture on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes. Finally she learned this recipe from her mother who used to make it.
