Following a 10-day break, the Quakers embark on their final non-conference game of the season, taking on Big 5 rival Temple at McGonigle Hall Saturday. The 2 p.m. tip off is the last before Penn s first Ivy League weekend of the year. In the Series For what was an even series early on in Penn s history, Temple has been the aggresor recently. The Owls have won five straight over the Quakers, eight of the last nine and 12 of the last 14. That includes six of the last seven when hosting the Quakers. Penn last defeated the Owls on Dec. 9, 2003, winning 70-64 in North Philadelphia. Overall, Temple has won 28 of the 39 all-time meetings. Second-year head coach Tonya Cardozza defeated the Quakers in her only meeting with Penn last season, 81-70 at The Palestra. Penn head coach Mike McLaughlin, who will be facing the Owls for the first time, is 0-3 this season against Big 5 competition. Last Time Out Once again, Penn just dug themselves into too big of a hole in the first half and were unable to make up a doubledigit deficit in the final 20 minutes, falling 57-40 to Saint Joseph s at Hagan Arena Tuesday afternoon. Jess Knapp nearly had a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds for the Quakers as she and junior Kim Adams scored the first 15 points of the game for Penn as three Quakers combined for all of the team s first-half points (senior Caitlin Slover had Penn s final two buckets of the first frame). Saint Joseph s did its best to get an early lead, but Knapp scored Penn s first four baskets. Adams scored the next six points for the Quakers, and after her first field goal, the Hawks held a 19-13 lead 9:57 left in the half. But it would be another five minutes before the Quakers would score again, giving Saint Joseph s a 26-13 edge with 5:07 on the clock. Saint Joseph s went to the locker room up 32-19. The second half started with six straight points for the Hawks, giving them a commanding 38-19 lead. Over the next three minutes, Penn closed the gap to 38-25. Minutes later, Ely s three kept the Quakers within striking distance at 42-28. With the score the same at the midway point, the Hawks hit a three, only to see the Red and Blue make another push. Sophomore Jourdan Banks hit a free throw and a possession later, Slover drained a three and the Quakers had momentum down 45-32 with 6:30 to go. Saint Joseph s did not record a single field goal over the final nine minutes of the contest. However, they finished the game 12-for-12 from the free throw line during that stretch. The perfect free throw shooting kept Penn at bay. Up Next It s the first Ivy League weekend with home games against Yale and Brown on Jan. 29 and 30th, respectively. QUAKER NOTEBOOK Defensive Numbers Though Penn has struggled on the offensive end of the floor this season, the Quakers have been trying to make up for it on the defensive end. Despite the added pressure on the defense due to the offensive setbacks, Penn ranks third in the Ivy League in points allowed, giving up just 61.8 per game. The Quakers also rank near the top half of the league in rebounding margin (fourth), blocked shots (fifth) and field goal defense (fifth). For a complete list of Penn s Ivy League rankings, see page six. Knapp on the Boards Some more impressive statistics in recent weeks have come from sophomore Jess Knapp. In just her first season in the Red and Blue after suffering a year-ending injury during the preseason as a freshman, Knapp is seventh in the Ivy League in rebounding and rising. In the last four games, Knapp has had at least eight rebounds in each, averaging 9.4 rebounds per game in that span. Knapp is also fourth in the Ivy League in blocked shots at 1.4 per game. Penn Trends Penn has lost the last 14 when trailing at the half and won five straight when leading at the half... Penn is undefeated on Thursdays... Penn has allowed just 61.8 points per game this season, second only to Princeton (52.2) in the Ivy League... Penn has lost the last 11 games in which they have allowed 60 or more points... In the last three games, three different players have led the team in scoring... Sophomore Jess Knapp has led the Quakers in rebounding in each of the last four games. Ivy League Leader Senior Sarah Bucar has sat out for a total of 16 minutes this season and easily leads the Ivy League in minutes played per game. She has now logged 544 minutes of playing time (of a possible 560) in the first 14 games. Her average of 38.9 minutes per game leads Judie Lomax of Columbia (37.5) who played in an overtime game earlier this season. Fourth in the league is senior and fellow team captain Caitlin Slover (34.4 mpg). 68 Days in the City of Brotherly Love The Quakers are in the midst of playing 12 straight games in the city of Philadelphia. They play three road games in that time, but all against Big 5 opponents. The team last left the City of Brotherly Love on Dec. 6 to take on Navy. They will not leave again until taking off for a matchup with Cornell on Feb. 12 a span of 68 days. Penn Picked to Finish Seventh The Quakers were picked to finish seventh in league play this season after the release of the Ivy League media poll on Oct. 28. Penn received 36 votes, finishing ahead of Brown (19). Dartmouth, the defending Ivy League champions, was picked to finish first with 11 of the 16 first-place votes and 123 points. They were followed by Harvard s five first-place votes and 115 points. Princeton was picked to finish third with 86 points, just in front of fourth-place Columbia (83). Cornell and Yale each received 57 points to finish in a tie for fifth. A Penn Win Would...... break a 20-game losing streak to Big 5 opponents.... be Penn s first Big 5 win since defeating St. Joseph s on Dec. 1, 2004.... break a five-game losing streak to the Owls. A Penn Loss Would...... make the Quakers 1-14 overall and 0-4 in the Big 5.... be the 13th in a row in the month of January.... be the ninth straight away from The Palestra.... be less good than a win. 2009-10 IVY LEAGUE WOMEN S BASKETBALL PRESEASON POLL First-Place Votes in Parentheses Rank School Points 1. However, despite senior Kelly Scott s career-high 21 points, Saint Joseph s found a way to slide by the Quakers, 66-60. It was a three-point game down the stretch, 61-58, as the Hawks had possession at the 1:17 mark. A tremendous defensive effort led to a steal by senior Anca Popovici and the Quakers had a chance to tie. However, senior Carrie Biemer s layup was called off on an offensive foul call and Saint Joseph s was able to make its free throws to put the game out of reach. The Hawks got off to a quick start with the game s first nine points. However, when Scott hit her first three of the night to start the scoring for the Quakers at the 16:47 mark, Penn hit its stride. With just over seven minutes to go in the first half, after four straight points from senior Katarina Lackner, the game was tied at 18-18. Saint Joseph s again tried to pull away before the intermission, taking a 27-20, but Penn battled back and when Scott hit another three with 30 seconds remaining, the game was tied again, 31-31, going into the half. Saint Joseph s opened the second half on a tear. The Hawks scored the first eight points for a 39-31 lead three minutes into the second frame. Penn was again resilient, pushing right back with a Lackner lay-up squeezed between two Scott three-pointers to close the gap to 41-39 with 14:40 left. Penn was within one, 59-58, at the four minute mark when Caitlin Slover buried an open layup off of an excellent pass by sophomore Erin Power. 2009-10 Penn Women s Basketball Game Notes 4

As the winningest active head coach in college basketball, McLaughlin was hired as Penn s eighth head coach in program history on April 24, 2009. McLaughlin came to Penn from NCAA Division II member Holy Family University, where in 14 seasons as head coach of the women s basketball team he has had a career equal to anyone who has coached the game. McLaughlin has racked up an impressive record of 407 wins and 61 losses, a winning percentage of.870 which is the highest at any level of NCAA Basketball (men or women). Out of his 14 seasons as a head coach, McLaughlin has been honored as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Coach of the Year 13 times. Last year, McLaughlin won his 400th game as a head coach faster than any other women s basketball coach in NCAA history, doing it in 459 games. The Division I record is held by Leon Barmore, who needed 463 games to reach the milestone at Louisiana Tech, while the Division III record is 464 games set by Nancy Fahey at Washington University (Mo.). McLaughlin s teams won at least 25 games in each of his 14 years as Holy Family s head coach. In six of those years (1998, 2000-03, 2008), the Tigers won 30 games, including a pair of 32-win seasons (1998 and 2008). Holy Family reached 29 wins three other times (1999, 2006, 2007). Holy Family won six CACC Tournament championships with him at the helm (2000-02, 2005, 2007-08) and four NAIA conference crowns (Southeastern - 1996; Northeast - 1997, 1998; North - 2003). As an NAIA member, the Tigers made four trips to the national quarterfinals (1998, 2001-03), and since joining NCAA Division II in 2003-04 the team has qualified for the NCAA Tournament every season. McLaughlin has had his tremendous success with tough, hard-nosed defense. In five of the last six seasons, the Tigers finished in the top-10 in Division II in scoring defense and led the nation in that statistic in 2003-04 (51.8 ppg), 2007-08 (50.7 ppg), and 2008-09 (48.5 ppg). During the same time span, Holy Family ended the season in the top-five in field goal percentage defense five times the Tigers were sixth this past season and twice led the nation. McLaughlin s teams also had success in the classroom. All of the four-year players that he has brought in, and stayed all four years, have graduated. In 2007-08, the team boasted a team gradepoint average of 3.43. For the second year in a row, McLaughlin s program was rated the best in Division II by the College Bound Student Athletes (CBSA) guide. A graduate of Holy Family, McLaughlin received his bachelor s degree in criminal justice. From his stellar playing career at Holy Family, he remains fifth all-time in scoring with 1,710 points and third with 755 assists. McLaughlin also remains the best 3-point shooter to wear a Tiger uniform, connecting on 57.7 percent (161 of 279) of his attempts in his four seasons. He also holds the top two 3-point shooting percentages for a season in 1989 McLaughlin hit 59.3 percent of his shots, and in 1988 he was a 58.5-percent shooter. McLaughlin also spent three seasons with the Washington Generals/Harlem Globetrotters, where he served as the Generals team captain as he played in more than 50 countries throughout the world. McLaughlin lives with his wife Ginny and three children (Courtney, Michael and Kelsey). 2009-10 Penn Women s Basketball Game Notes 8
