Iowa Newspaper Association All-State Baseball Teams chosen DES MOINES - The Iowa Newspaper Association announced its 2006 All-State Baseball selections Monday, selecting first, second, third teams and team captains for classes 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A. The four seniors selected as team captains were 4A - Zach Von Tersch, Cedar Falls; 3A - Bill Schmitt, Western Dubuque; 2A - Jake West, Davenport Assumption; 1A - Levi Ferguson, North Mahaska. Zach Von Tersch of Cedar Falls was selected as captain of the Class 4A team. Von Tersch, a hard-hitting right-hander, struck out 91 hitters and walked seven in 63 2/3 innings pitched for Cedar Falls. Von Tersch, who will pitch at Georgia Tech next season, allowed only eight earned runs and 28 hits. Opponents hit just.151 against Von Tersch. Western Dubuque pitcher/first baseman Billy Schmitt was voted captain of the Class 3A team. The senior compiled a 9-0 record with a 0.75 earned run average on the mound, and hit.373 with eight home runs and 50 runs batted in. Schmitt was 2-0 against top-ranked (Class 3A) West Delaware this season, out-dualing fellow all-stater B.J. Hermsen, 2-0, in a memorable first-round district game. He also threw a 2-1 victory in the substate final against New Hampton. Schmitt will continue his baseball career at Wartburg College in Waverly this fall. Davenport Assumption's Jake West was named captain of the Class 2A team. Going into this week's state tournament, he had compiled a record of 10-1 with an earned run average of 1.15, with 48 strikeouts in 61 innings. A senior righthander, he also batted.298 in limited plate appearances. As a junior last year, he was 3-4. This year's Assumption team took the No. 1 state ranking and a 35-6 record to the state tourney after capturing the Mississippi Athletic Conference championship where the remaining nine teams are all 4A schools. Earlier in the season, he was the winning pitcher against West Des Moines Valley which is the 3-time defending state 4A champion. He's going to pitch in college at Division II Winona State (Minn.).

Levi Ferguson of North Mahaska was named captain of the Class 1A team. He batted.614 with 11 home runs and 31 RBIs. He had 14 doubles, 1.228 slugging percentage and was 35 of 37 in stolen bases. He was 6-2 with a 1.40 ERA. He struck out 61 batters. He was also named Mr. Football after last fall's 1A title.
