Maryland Street Indianapolis, IN 46225 317.532.3545 www.indyindians.com Buffalo Bisons 23-13, 1st IL North RHP Miguel Batista (1-1, 6.38 ERA) Tuesday May 14, 2013 7:05 p.m. EDT Victory Field Indianapolis, IN Game #40 Home Game #22 TRIBE TRENDS: The Toledo Mud Hens belted two two-run homers and held the Indians to just two hits after the second inning as they ended the Tribe s five game overall and nine-game home winning streaks with a 6-3 win yesterday... The Tribe s nine-game home streak was tied for the longest ever during the Victory Field era... Despite the defeat, the Indians are still a Minor League baseball best 17-4 at home this season and own the second-best record in the minors at 27-12 overall... By winning 3 of four against Toledo, the Indians still took the four-game series vs. the Mud Hens and have still yet to drop a series at home in 2013 (five wins, one split)... RHP Duke Welker tossed a scoreless ninth yesterday in his first appearance since being optioned back from Pittsburgh on May 12... Welker has not allowed an earned run over his 11 appearances with Indianapolis this season and has held opposing batters to an IL reliever-best.078 batting average, having surrendered just four hits over 17.0 innings pitched. FIRST PLACE SHOWDOWN: Tonight the IL West Division leading Indians welcome the IL North leaders, the Buffalo Bisons, to Victory Field... The matchup features the IL s top pitching staff (Indianapolis) vs. the IL s most prolific offense (Buffalo)... Entering the series, the Indians pitching staff ranks first in the IL in ERA (2.72), saves (17), hits allowed (252), home runs allowed (19) and WHIP (1.14), while sitting in second in innings pitched (344.1) and strikeouts (348)... On the other side, the Buffalo s offense paces the IL in batting average (.294), home runs (43), on-base percentage (.371) and strikeouts (242), while also ranking tied for first in runs scored (198) and second in hits (350), RBI (187) and total bases (558)... The Indians feature three of the top 20 individual ERAs in RHP Gerrit Cole (4th, 2.23), LHP Andy Oliver (T-8th, 2.70), RHP Brandon Cumpton (16th, 3.31), while Buffalo owns four of the top 10 individual batting averages in INF Jim Negrych (1st,.417), INF Luis Jimenez (2nd,.378), C Josh Thole (4th,.352) and OF Moises Sierra (T-6th,.336). TONIGHT S TRIBE STARTER: Pittsburgh Pirates top prospect RHP Gerrit Cole (2-1, 2.23 ERA) looks to get the Indians off to a good start in their first-place showdown with Buffalo tonight... The right-hander is coming off his third straight quality start on May 9 in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre when he allowed just one run on four hits and two walks while striking out five over 7.0 innings pitched... Through his last three outings, Cole has posted a 1.80 ERA (4 ER in 20.0 IP), surrendering just 11 hits and eight walks while striking out 12... Since allowing three runs in his first start of the season on April 5 against Columbus, Cole has allowed an average of only one run per start (six runs allowed in six games)... Over those six outings, Cole ranks tied for third in the IL with a 1.67 ERA and fourth with a.185 batting average against... The 2011 #1 overall draft pick has been particularly effective against right-handed batters this season, holding them to just a.117 batting average (7-for-60) with only two extra-base hits and 16 strikeouts. TONIGHT S BISONS STARTER: Scheduled to make the start in the series opener for Buffalo is Major League veteran Miguel Batista (1-1, 6.38 ERA)... The right-hander, who has spent the entire season with the Bisons, is coming off his worst start of 2013 in which he allowed six runs on seven hits and four walks in a loss to the Norfolk Tides on May 9... Prior to that outing, Batista had worked three straight solid starts in which he went 1-0 with a 3.63 ERA (7 ER in 17.1 IP) with eight strikeouts and seven walks... This stretch came after a rough start to the season for the right-hander, as he pitched in two game twos of two doubleheaders on April 14 and 17, allowing a combined four earned runs on 11 hits over just 3.0 innings pitched... Batista has had more success on the road than at home in 2013, turning in a 9.58 ERA (11 ER in 10.1 IP) with all three of his home runs, nine walks and just four strikeouts at home, as opposed to a 3.95 ERA (6 ER in 13.2 IP) with no home runs allowed, four walks and 11 strikeouts on the road... Batista made his pro debut in 1990 with the then GCL Expos, the same year that tonight s Indianapolis Indians starter Gerrit Cole was born... Across 18 Major League seasons, Batista has posted a 102-115 record and 4.48 ERA with 1250 strikeouts and 899 walks over 658 appearances... Entering this season, he has also turned in a 60-46 mark and 4.29 ERA with 610 strikeouts and 417 walks over 228 Minor League appearances. BASHING AT THE BOTTOM: Ivan DeJesus continued his recent hot stretch by going 2-for-4 with two RBI yesterday, and has now driven in runs in three straight games while posting multi-hit efforts in three of his last four contests... Since April 26, DeJesus has collected hits in 13 of his 16 games played and owns the fifth-best batting average in the IL (.368, 21-for-57) over that span... DeJesus has also driven in a team-high 12 runs during that span, which ranks tied for 10th in the IL, thanks in part to his team-best six doubles, which are also tied for the sixth most in the league over that span as well... The right-handed slugger has found a home at the bottom of the Tribe lineup, as he is batting.405 (17-for-42) with six runs and 10 RBI in 12 games from the eighth spot of the batting order, while also hitting.292 (7-for-24) with four runs and three RBI from the nine hole... DeJesus has posted a combined.364 average (24-for-66) when batting from the bottom two spots in the Tribe order, as opposed to just a.167 mark (3-for-18) when hitting anywhere else in the lineup. DOUBLE TROUBLE: C Tony Sanchez went 1-for-3 with a run, RBI and the Tribe s lone extra-base hit, a second-inning double yesterday... Sanchez has now smashed a double in four straight games and driven in a run in three out of his last four... Dating back to April 27, the Tribe backstop has collected a hit in each game he has started (eight contests), with his lone hitless effort over that span coming in a pinch-hit performance on May 4... Thanks to his recent two-bagger blitzkrieg, Sanchez has taken over the team lead in slugging percentage at.457, and ranks second to only INF Matt Hague in doubles (Sanchez - 9, Hague - 10) despite having played in 13 less games than Hague this season. WE RE GOING STREAKING! : Despite both INF Matt Hague and RF Jerry Sands failing to collect a hit in yesterday s contest, they both extended impressive streaks with a hit by pitch and walk respectively... By drawing a hit-by-pitch in the eighth inning of yesterday s contest, Hague extended his impressive on-base streak to 20 straight games... Hague, who has played in every game for the Indians this season, has batted.315 (23-for-73) with eight runs, 11 RBI, 11 walks and a.414 on-base percentage during his current on-base streak... He also reached base safely in 16 straight games from April 6-21 earlier this season, during which he hit.339 (19-for-56)... For Sands, who failed to collect multiple hits in his third straight contest yesterday, the right-handed slugger drew a base-on-balls to extend his on-base streak to 11 straight games (since May 2)... Though he has collected just seven hits during his 11-game on-base streak, he has drawn an IL-best 11 walks and now ranks tied for seventh in the league with 20 free passes on the season.
