Install Guide VersaScreen Pr VersaScreen Pr -.040 thickness fr use with 5 r 6 gutters, mre rigid - may need sme custmizing. VersaScreen Pr installatin prcess is very simple requiring nly a tin snips, hand brake, battery pwered screw gun, 1/4 hex drive fr zip screws, safety glasses, glves, and a tape measure. A siding brake is als helpful t custmize the VersaScreen t specific cnditins. Gutters shuld be clean and free f debris. On existing gutters, reseal miters, utlets and end caps. Make sure the gutter is prperly pitched and has adequate dwnsputs fr prper drainage. 3x4 inch rectangular r 4 inch rund dwnsputs are recmmended. Imprperly pitched gutters can result in standing water in the gutter and fine debris nt being washed ut f the gutter. Gutters with t much pitch can result in the gutter being t lw n the rf line. Additinal dwnsputs shuld be installed t crrect this prblem. While the installatin f VersaScreen Pr will strengthen the gutter assembly, it is als recmmended that adequate gutter straps/hangers be used and any lse fasteners be replaced r repaired. Wrking frm ladders r elevated surfaces can be dangerus. Cautin shuld be exercised and all applicable guidelines and laws shuld be fllwed. VersaScreen Pr (figure 1) is installed by sliding the back leading edge underneath the starter curse (r between the starter curse and first curse shingle) at the rf edge and fastening the frnt edge t the gutter lip using self tapping screws. The back f the drip lip must be firmly seated against the tp lip f the gutter s that the leading edge f the VersaScreen Pr hangs past t create a drip lip. This allws fr water t drip ff rather than flw dwn the frnt f the gutter. Failure t extend this drip lip past the frnt f the gutter may reduce the ability f the VersaScreen Pr t minimize tiger striping r staining n the gutter. A minimum f fur self tapping screws (included) must be used (n a full piece), but an additinal screw may be used if necessary. Additinal pieces are added in an verlapping fashin (@1/8-1/4 verlap). Alternately, VersaScreen Pr may be installed withut verlapping leaving a 1/16 gap between the pieces. Cautin - Installing VersaScreen Pr withut an verlap can result in FIGURE 1 sme streaking at the gap n the face f the gutter. VersaScreen Pr is designed t have the frnt drip lip lay flat n the tp f the gutter lip. This requires little r n mdificatin n rf pitches f 4/12 thrugh 8/12. If the drip lip des nt lay flat n the lip f the gutter, it will be necessary t perfrm a back leg bend n the VersaScreen Pr. This upward bend shuld be in plane with the rf and allw fr the VersaScreen Pr t sit flat n the gutter with a slight frward pitch. If VersaScreen Pr is installed incrrectly, runff can versht the gutter. 2
End Caps. (FIGURE 2) VersaScreen Pr des nt require separate pieces fr end caps r miters. Simply cut an angle n the end that allws fr the end f the screen t be flded dwn and tuck inside f the end cap. Optinally, an end cap may be made ut f black aluminum trim cil and fastened t the end cap. Inside Miter. (FIGURE 3A & 3B) Remve the frnt lip equal t the width f the gutters, i.e. 5 fr a 5K gutter. Slide end t ppsite gutter back. Trim @ 1 f the drip ff f the ppsing piece. Install with slight verlap. (FIGURE 4) Miter inside crner at slid drip prtin. A zip screw may be used t fasten verlap tgether. A diverter may be installed using a cut ff f VersaScreen Pr. The use f diverters will cause debris t build up and may effect the verall perfrmance f the gutter prtectin system. This shuld be discussed with the custmer. Outside Miter. (FIGURE 5) Outside miters are fabricated using a tab and verlap methd. The angle is determined frm the tp the fascia t the utside lip f the gutter. Measure fr length r start with a full piece. Add ¾ t make a tab. Starting frm the ppsite directin, cut the angle and verlap the tabbed prtin. (FIGURE 6) 3
Back Leg Bend. VersaScreen Pr is designed t have a frward pitch t assist in the shedding f debris. This angle is the result f the frnt drip lip laying flat n the frnt lip f the gutter. Exceeding this angle can result in run ff vershting. VersaScreen Pr may be installed n rf pitches up t 8/12 with little r n adjustments being necessary. Steeper rf pitches require a back leg bend in plane with the rf. The pint at which VersaScreen Pr is bent is identified as B n FIGURE 7. That pint is the area at which the rf planes thrugh the VersaScreen. This shuld be bent t match the pitch f the rf while allwing VersaScreen t maintain its frward pitch. If the frnt lip f the gutter falls belw the plane f the rf, additinal dwnsputs shuld be cnsidered. If additinal dwnsputs cannt be added, fllw the bends n FIGURE 7a). This will allw fr the angle f the VersaScreen t be adjusted up and then the back leg t be bent t accmmdate the pitch f the rf. If the angle created between C and B is t steep, vershting may be a prblem. This shuld be cnsidered when installing VersaScreen Pr in this fashin. Fascia Munt Fastening. VersaScreen Pr may be mdified when it is necessary t fasten the rf side f the VersaScreen Pr t the fascia. This may be the case with metal rfs, wd shake/shingle, tile, and flat rfs (rubber, tp, etc.). FIGURE 8 T mdify, measure the distance frm the fascia t the frnt lip f the gutter and add 1 1/8 t this measurement. Make sure t measure at a slight upward angle t allw fr the VersaScreen Pr t sit prperly n the frnt lip f the gutter. Sheer r therwise remve any extra material. Using a brake r ther suitable bending tl, turn 3/4 up n the back side shy f 90 degrees t create a fastening leg. Fasten the VersaScreen Pr t the frnt lip and then t the fascia underneath/belw the rfing materials. This lip can als be turned dwn ¾ and fastened t the fascia first and then t the frnt lip f the gutter. FIGURE 9 4
The VersaScreen IceBlaster installatin prcess is very simple requiring nly a tin snips, hand brake, battery pwered screw gun, pwered circular r cut ff saw, safety glasses, glves, and a tape measure. A siding brake is als helpful t custmize the VersaScreen t specific cnditins. Fr the heat cable installatin instructins, please see the heat cable manufacturer s instructins. Additinal dwnsputs shuld be installed t crrect these prblems. While the installatin f VersaScreen Pr will strengthen the gutter assembly, it is als recmmended that adequate gutter straps/hangers be used and any lse fasteners be replaced r repaired. Wrking frm ladders r elevated surfaces can be dangerus. Cautin shuld als be exercised while wrking with pwer tls and sharp materials. All applicable guidelines and laws shuld be fllwed. Cnsult the VersaScreen Pr Installatin Guide fr prper installatin f the VersaScreen Pr. This guide cvers the installatin f the Rf Edge (RE) extrusin and the Drip Edge (DE) estrusin that cmprise the IceBlaster installatin. Using nly UL apprved self regulating heat cables supplied with the system r supplied by an apprved manufacturer. Care must be exercised s that fasteners d nt pierce the self regulating heat cables. Any damaged heat cables must be remved and replaced r repaired using UL apprved splice kits. Fllw all guidelines supplied by the manufacturer fr the installatin f self regulating heat cables. VersaScreen IceBlaster RE RE Extrusin. Slide the RE extrusin under the starter curse (r alternately, between the starter and first curse) shingles. (Figure 10) Leave the RE extrusin ut @ 1 frm the rf edge t allw fr the installatin f the self regulating heat cables. Only apprved self regulating heat cables may be used with VersaScreen IceBlaster. The use f cnstant wattage heat cables is prhibited in cnnectin with VersaScreen IceBlaster Prducts. Clean ut any debris that may fall int the heat cable channel. The heat cables may be temprarily held in place by small spring clips. Once the self regulating heat cables have been prperly psitined and ruted, seal the heat cable in place using 2 aluminized tape and slide the RE extrusin int place with the bttm channel f the RE extrusin abutting the rf edge. (Figure 12) The RE extrusin shuld be installed with a sealant adhesive r butyl tape applied under the extrusin in several places. Next, slide the VersaScreen Pr between the shingles and the RE extrusin. 5
Back Leg Bend. The VersaScreen Pr may need a back leg mdificatin t match the rf pitch and allw the upper prtin f the VersaScreen Pr t rest n the RE extrusin. FIGURE 7 & 7a It is imprtant fr the functin f the VersaScreen IceBlaster that the VersaScreen Pr be firmly and flatly seated against the RE extrusin. The pressure f the rfing material may be sufficient t achieve this dwnward pressure. If nt, wafer head r flat head fasteners (nt supplied) may be used t securely fasten the VersaScreen Pr t the RE extrusin under the shingles. Failure t seat the VersaScreen Pr against the RE extrusin will minimize the transfer f heat energy t the VersaScreen Pr, lessening the effectiveness in minimizing ice dams and icicle frmatins. Inside/Outside Crners and Ends. The RE extrusin shuld be stpped 2-3 inches shrt f the crner r end t allw fr the self regulating heat cable t lp dwn int the gutter. FIGURE 11 Any cuts t the RE extrusin shuld have all burrs r sharp edge filed t prevent damage t the heat cable. Fllw the heat cables shuld be ruted and taped int place. FIGURE 12 Include heat cables in gutter bttm and extending dwn dwnsputs/leaders. It is nt recmmended that the RE extrusin be used under wd shakes/shingles, metal rfing, synthetic slate/shakes, slate, tile r ther material that wuld limit the heat transfer thrugh the rf. Fr these applicatins, the Drip Edge (DE) installatin shuld be used. The DE installatin can als be used with asphalt r ther materials. VersaScreen IceBlaster DE IceBlaster DE. Install the self regulating heat cable in the gutter bttm and in all attached dwnsputs first. Leave enugh extra heat cable t install n tp f the VersaScreen Pr fr the DE installatin. Install the VersaScreen Pr as directed in the VersaScreen Pr install guide with the exceptin that the VersaScreen Pr shuld nt be screwed in place. This will allw fr the installatin f the DE flashing withut having t remve any zip screws. Rute the remaining heat cable n tp f the Versa Screen Pr. The heat cable shuld be installed at an angle in the frnt area f the VersaScreen Pr t allw fr prper installatin f the DE Extrusin (see DE rendering). Install the DE flashing using #8 x ½ zip screws (included). FIGURE 13 Extreme cautin shuld be exercised s as nt t drive any fasteners thrugh the self regulating FIGURE 13 heat cables. 6
Inside/Outside Crners and Ends. When it is necessary t rute arund a crner r lp int a gutter at an end, a slt must be cut in the frnt channel area f the VersaScreen Pr where the heat cable nests. This shuld be @ 5/8 wide (slightly wider than the heat cable itself) and 2-3 inches lng. The edges shuld be prtected by a layer f electrical r similar tape t prevent any sharp edges frm damaging the heat cable. After the heat cable is installed, the DE flashing will cmpletely cver this area. On the DE extrusin, crners shuld be mitered fr appearance. VersaScreen IceBlaster Pr IceBlaster Pr. IceBlaster Pr cmbines bth the RE and the DE versins f VersaScreen IceBlaster. This versin can be used in areas where greater melting capacity is desired r necessary. This allws fr tw heat cables t be n tp f the IceBlaster and nly ne is necessary in the bttm f the gutter. Fllw the installatin instructins fr the RE extrusin and then allw fr the installatin f the DE extrusin fllwing thse installatin instructins. Layut f heat cable shuld be cnsidered fr the best path and ruting t minimize splices and dubling back. It is best t install the heat cable in the gutter bttm and dwnsput first, then in the RE extrusin. The VersaScreen Pr is then installed fllwed by the heat cable at the frnt edge with the DE flashing. Heat Cable Installatin Principles: Heat cable layut shuld be planned prir t the installatin beginning Cnsider a layut that minimizes r eliminates the use f Tee Splices If Tee Splices are used, plan s they are used efficiently Tee Splices shuld be lcated where they will nt sit in water Cnfirm all measurements befre cutting heat cable t length Fllw all instructins prvided by the heat cable manufacturer Use prper grund fault prtectin as required by the manufacturer Failure t fllw manufacturer s instructins will vid all warranties. Failure t fllw manufacturer s instructins may result in the system nt perating prperly and culd lead t dangerus cnditins resulting in injury r death Repair r replace any damaged cable immediately 7
