The weather was definitely unusual for Sunny Florida, but we managed to play golf every Saturday regardless. Last Saturday, Jan. 30th, was absolutely gorgeous! We have been fielding record numbers of players...last event was 52 players,...this Saturday is 44 players...that s lots of organizing for the poor Golf Chair. (WHO has been managing to get the tee times and pairings out to all players by the prior Wednesday.) She should get a GOLD Star! The courses have been in pretty good shape considering all of the rain and overcast skies that we have had. Even the Golf Superintendent at Bonita Bay has had to close his courses many days because the greens aren t growing properly due to the El Nino effect. (I understand all golf courses in our area are suffering the same problems.) Another one of our members has had a medical problem Sue Carani had a stroke 3 weeks ago and did not receive medical attention for almost 24 hours. I am glad to say that she has now been moved to the Rehab Unit and is undergoing physical therapy 3 times daily. she still has a long and difficult recovery facing her, so send a card if you can and add her to your prayer list. He continues to remain upbeat, but he also has bouts of discouragement, so lets continue to let him know that we miss him and are thinking of him. It will be held at the Palm Aire Country Club, a private Club on October 15th and 16th. Registration is about $195 and includes 2 rounds of golf, buffet dinner and dancing (live music) Saturday...and buffet on Sunday. Happy hour Friday evening. Each day, the tournament includes match play between Chapter teams and a scramble or shamble event for any ASGA members who participate but are not on the teams. Membership Committee Report ~Elizabeth Mark We have new members and many renewals this past month, Marilyn Ardente, Rich Albert, Sami Mannina, Fran Mathies and Rick Schmaelzle to name a few. We a number of persons who have been our guests in past events and MUST join to continue playing with us. WELCOME all! We must re-state that guests are welcome twice, but then they must join. The same goes for members who have not renewed. They cannot take part in our golf events or socials if their membership is not current. We welcome our newest members and encourage those whose member- ships have lapsed to renew promptly. Most of our new members are coming by word of mouth, so talk our Chapter up with your friends. That s why we are such a fun group! Social Committee David Tipple hosted a wonder After Christmas party at his home and not only was the food and atmosphere great, but David and Denny entertained us with music and song. Thanks David! It seems our members are pretty good at socializing after our golf events. Duffy s is located right next to Stoneybrook Golf Course and there is a good variety of food and 55 large screen TVs. Fitzgerald s is almost right across Bonita Beach Rd. from Spanish Wells Golf Club and we always seem to be there for their Happy Hour.. Good food...good company and good conversation...a perfect mix. Larry shanked his drive on the 3rd hole which is set back of the golf cart parking area by about 30 yards. Larry s ball hits his golf cart, and rebounds into the fairway and lands almost 200 yards from the tee in the middle of the fairway. Larry of course says something glib like, you have to play the entire course and understand rebounds to play golf well." I of course said something like, "I think you may have to add a penalty stroke to your score." This is when the game became a bit less friendly. What is the correct penalty, if any? A. No penalty, ball plays as it lies. B. No penalty, however the stroke must be cancelled and the ball must be returned to the original point of play and be re-hit. C. One stroke penalty and the ball must be returned to the original point of play and be re-hit. D. One stroke penalty and the ball plays as it lies. E. Two stroke penalty and the ball should be plays as it lies. Answer And the answer is D, Larry incurs a one stroke penalty and the ball plays as it lies. This one may catch a few of you as the penalty for this type of incident was changed recently changed. Larry was in violation of USGA Rule 19-2. This is the rule that addresses Ball in Motion Deflected or Stopped by Player, Partner, Caddie or Equipment. Since the golf cart is considered part of his equipment, Larry incurs a penalty. As of this 2008, Larry would earn a penalty of one stroke in both match play and stroke play and would be required to play the ball as it lies. Previously, the penalty was two strokes in stroke play and loss of hole in match play.
