Welcome to the UPPER KEYS SAILING CLUB On Beautiful Buttonwood Sound Membership Information Packet

About Our Club The UKSC is a non-profit association with clubhouse and facilities on Buttonwood Sound, located at mile marker 99.5 bayside in Key Largo, Florida. Membership in UKSC is for all persons who meet the membership criteria listed in the Club s Bylaws, without regard to race, religion, gender, ethnicity, occupation or disability. The UKSC was founded in 1973 by local families interested in supporting the competitive, educational and social aspects of sailing within a community-based sailing club. Today, over 40 years later, the UKSC is a strong organization with membership of over 140 family and individual members. Another way to put it: we re a diverse group of guys and gals banded together to enjoy the fun and sport of sailing. Our clubhouse becomes a second home to many and a place to hang out with good friends. Our members enjoy the spectrum of sailing activities. The Club is a gathering place for organized and spontaneous races, sailing excursions and rendezvous, training in sailing and racing (open to the public), and finally, parties and dinners. The active members who get the most out of the Club participate in the development of sailing fleets, operations and maintenance of our facilities, organization of events, and long-term planning for the success of the Club. According to our Bylaws, membership capacity is limited to 220 family and individual memberships. One third of these memberships are available for Associate members.

Types of Memberships Members can join the UKSC in one of three membership classes: Regular - A resident or property owner in the Upper Keys (Long Key Bridge to the Monroe County line), and an owner of a sailboat that can sail at the club. A Regular member can hold office and vote in the elections of officers and directors as well as on all other issues. Associate Anyone who is not a resident or property owner in the Upper Keys, or may not be officers or directors. They may vote only on the Club issues that affect them financially. Junior Open to youth age 10 20 years. Juniors will follow the protocol and procedures to become members the same as any other type of membership. Juniors will be under the responsibility of the Youth Program Director. All members should have a strong interest in participation in sailing events, in promoting the enjoyment of sailing, in development of the Upper Keys Sailing Club, and in using their skills for the good of the organization.

The Course to Membership We host a weekly TGIF every Friday evening, starting at 6:30. That s the perfect time for you to come check us out. Members bring a dish or snack to share, and this is when we get together to greet new guests, renew our friendships and swap stories. At least one member of the membership committee will be on hand to show you around and help you get to know the club and its members during your initial visit. You will be asked to fill out a Survey, which will allow us to contact you in the future. Acquaint yourself with as many members as possible during your visits. Ask questions if you wish, but most of all feel free to join in the activities and have as much fun as you can. By your second visit you should find at least one member to sponsor you for membership. This person should help you through the membership process. By your third visit, you should have found two sponsors, and submit an application along with the application fee. There is a place on the application form to list your sponsors. Your sponsors will eventually write letters of recommendation for you. You will then be a Prospective Member. You will need to participate in three different events at the club. These could be races, parties, dinners, or a General Membership Meeting. Your sponsor can help you select these events, and will sign-off on the events on your application form. These activities will give you plenty of time to get to know the members of the club, and help us to get to know you better, as well. When you have completed your three events and found two member sponsors, you will be ready to attend a meeting of the Membership Committee. You should bring your completed application with you, along with a check for your initiation fee. At this interview we ll ask you to tell us a little about yourself, and you will have the opportunity to ask us about the club. The Membership Committee will then vote on accepting your application. The final step in the membership process is when your application is presented to the Board of Directors at their next meeting, for the final approval. You do not need to attend this meeting. The following day you will be notified of their decision.

UKSC SAILING EVENTS The UKSC calendar features individual races, weekend regattas, and series races. The Club periodically hosts educational sailing programs and special events. There are many regatta dinners and holiday parties held throughout the year as well. We have an active Youth Sailing Program that provides sailing instruction for youth in the community between the ages of 8 and 16. PHRF FLEET Keelboats can compete in many one or two-day PHRF regattas. There are about a dozen bayside and Oceanside races held annually. SMALL BOAT FLEETS The Club is home to Hobie Waves, Sunfish, JY 15 s, Force Fives, and Lasers to name a few. These active small-boats hold seasonal racing series, with trophies awarded to series winners. The fleets also host regional and national races. The racing calendar includes one-design races and mixed small-boat races under the Portsmouth handicap system. CRUISING The Club s cruising committee recognizes UKSC members who organize cruising events and log their cruising experiences, along with other club members, during the year. The cruising members of the Club help facilitate trips near and far for new and experienced pleasure boaters. BOAT STORAGE AND DOCKAGE Storage for a member s sailboat is available by a signed lease agreement with the Club. The Club has expanded its rack storage and tried to maximize space for upland trailer storage. The Fleet Captain and Dock Master are responsible for storage. Dock space for larger vessels is limited. Seeking membership mainly to obtain dockage is discouraged. The Dock Committee reviews applications for dock slips separately from membership applications. Permanent dockage is not available to non-members or non-sailing vessels. CLUB FACILITIES The UKSC owns its property, buildings and docks. Situated on the bayside in Key Largo, the property includes a dock for sailboats up to 35 feet long, dry storage for small boats and rack storage for dinghies. Amenities for members include the use of club-owned small boats (a Hobie Wave, Sunfish, Flying Scot, Prams and JY-15) for day sailing, after certification of the skipper. Members have the use of the property s boat launching ramps, small docks for landings, sandy beach areas, picnic tables on the sunset jetty, hose-off areas, and outdoor hot-water shower and indoor bathrooms. The Clubhouse includes a bar, water cooler, stereo and television. Club operations are centered on weekend regattas and other events. Bar service is available Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and on holiday events. In the absence of the Dockmasters, club members may self-tab. A snack menu is available at specified times. For some meetings and regattas, we hold either covered dish dinners or dinners hosted by volunteers. Some special events, such as the Blackwater Sound Regatta, New Year s Eve, and the Change of Watch, are celebrated with catered dinners.
