The Golden Hurricane finished the season with a 9-20 record, the second straight season that Tulsa has finished with nine wins... after starting the season 2-5, Head Coach John Phillips announced his resignation on Christmas Day... he was succeeded by interim coach Alvin Pooh Williamson... it took six games for Williamson to get his first career victory, an 83-63 victory at New Mexico State... Tulsa won five ot its last 11 games, including a 5-3 mark in the month of February... the Hurricane finished in ninth place in the Western Athletic Conference with a 5-13 record. TULSA WINS 6 OF FINAL 7 HOME GAMES... Tulsa won six of its final seven home contests, and ended the home campaign with an 8-8 record... the Hurricane posted three straight home wins, then lost against Rice before beating Northern Arizona, Hawaii and San Jose State to close out the home season... among those wins, TU upended second-place Fresno State and first-place UTEP... Tulsa won those six games by a margin of 13.5 points, including three vs. FSU, 11 against UTEP, 13 vs. Boise State, 15 against Northern Arizona, seven vs. Hawaii and 32 against San Jose State... in those six wins, Tulsa shot.491 from the field (164-of-334), while holding the opposition to a.361 percentage (127-of-352). THERE S BEEN ONE CONSTANT IN TULSA WINS, MINUS ONE... In eight of Tulsa s nine wins this year, there was one constant statistic that has stood out in those victories, as the Hurricane held the opposition to 65 points or less... that was not the case in Tulsa s eighth win of the year, an 83-76 win over Hawaii... in Tulsa s other eight wins, Tulsa held Northwestern State to 54 points, Prairie View A&M to 44, New Mexico State to 63 points, Fresno State to 65, UTEP to 54 points, Boise State to 63 points, 64 to Northern Arizona and San Jose State to 48 points... Tulsa posted a 2-13 record in games decided by eight or less points, including three overtime losses... 10 of those losses by eight or less points have come under Pooh Williamson... the Hurricane was 1-9 in games decided by six or less points... Tulsa s two wins in those close games was a three-point victory at home against Fresno State, 68-65, and a seven-point win vs. Hawaii, 83-76, at home... the Hurricane was 0-4 overall in overtime games this year, including losses by 6, 12, 7 and 7 points... since Pooh Williamson took over as head coach, the Hurricane lost by three or less points in three games, all coming on the road Boise State (1), Hawaii (3) and Fresno State (2).

Alvin Pooh Williamson was appointed as interim head coach on Saturday, December 25, following the resignation of John Phillips. Williamson garnered his first career victory with an 83-63 victory vs. New Mexico State on Jan. 10, 2005. He finished the season with a 7-15 record. Williamson, 31, is in his fourth season on the Tulsa coaching staff. A 1996 graduate of Tulsa, Williamson was the point guard that led Tubby Smith-coached Hurricane teams to consecutive NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances in 1994 and 1995. He has been a part of four NCAA tournament teams with the Hurricane, including two as a player and two as an assistant coach (2002 and 2003). Prior to returning to his alma mater as an assistant coach, Williamson coached one year at Tulane (2000-01). Before that, he spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Illinois State (1998-00) Youngest NCAA Division I Coaches: and two seasons at 1. Jeff Capel, VCU 29 2. I m very, very, very excited, I want to first and foremost say that, about the opportunity. But for myself, Kwanza, Ja and Steve Cooper, we re all, without a doubt, very, very disappointed in the fact that coach Phillips is no longer with us. I want to thank Coach Phillips for everything. For bringing me back to my alma mater, to the city I love, to the university I love and to the program and university that helped me become the man I am today. I want to thank him for that, for everything he did for me with basketball and outside of basketball. MORE ON POOH... Alvin Pooh Williamson was the first signee at Tulsa for Tubby Smith... he gets his nickname Pooh from when he was a baby and dressed in orange pajamas, his Aunt Deandra dubbed him Pooh because he looked like a little Winnie the Pooh... he and assistant coach Kwanza Johnson were teammates at Tulsa... Williamson was named an assistant coach at Tulsa on April 12, 2001... he is a native of Beggs, Oklahoma (located 30 minutes south of Tulssa)... Williamson was a four-year letterwinner at Tulsa and played in 118 games (1991-95)... he started 63 games in his final two seasons and had a 7.2 career scoring average... Williamson was a first-team all-mvc selection and all-defensive team performer as a senior in 1995... he led Tulsa to two NCAA Sweet Sixteen performances as Tulsa s starting points guard in 1993-94 and 1994-95... Williamson completed his career ranked seventh on the school s career assists list (277) and 10th on the all-time steals chart (111)... he averaged 12.8 points and 3.4 assists in 32 games as a senior. GLENN NAMED TO WAC ALL-DEFENSIVE TEAM... For the second straight season, Jarius Glenn was named to the WAC s all-defensive team... it s the 10th time that Tulsa has had an alldefensive selection in the WAC... Glenn is the fourth Tulsa player to be named to the WAC s all-defensive team for multiple years... Eric Coley and Dante Swanson each earned the honor twice, while Michael Ruffin was a three-time alll-defensive team selection. Reynolds Center was on December 29, 1998, as the Golden Hurricane defeated a Rollie Massimino-led Cleveland State team, 79-51... on February 3, Tulsa played its 100th game in the Reynolds Center against the WAC s co-leading UTEP Miners... the Hurricane captured a double-digit victory in that game as well with a 65-54 victory... Tulsa now has a 78-26 record on their home floor for a.750 winning percentage... of Tulsa s 78 victories, 57 have been by double digits... Tulsa opened the Reynolds Center with six straight wins before losing its first game against UNLV, 54-53... it was then 14 more wins before Tulsa s next loss at home. GLENN NAMED WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK... Senior Jarius Glenn was named the WAC Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 31-Feb. 6... Glenn averaged 22.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.0 steals in wins over league-leading UTEP and Boise State... he shot 65-percent from the field (17-of-26), 67-percent from three-point range (4-of-6) and 64- percent from the free throw line (7-of-11)... Glenn had a game-high 18 points and 8 assists in 37 minutes against UTEP, while shooting 80-percent from the field (8-of-10) and 100-percent from three-point range (2-of- 2) and adding 5 rebounds and 2 steals... against Boise State, he scored a game-high 27 points while shooting 56-percent from the field and added 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks. After building a 17-point first-half lead, and seeing that lead evaporate into a 40-40 tie with 11:38 remaining in the game, Tulsa held on for a double-digit victory, 65-54 against the UTEP Miners at the Donald W. Reynolds Center on February 3... UTEP came into the game with a 17-4 record and tied for first-place in the league with a 7-2 WAC mark... after UTEP tied the score, Tulsa went on a 12-4 scoring run over the next five minutes... Tulsa outscored the Miners 25-14 over the final 11 minutes of the contest... the win marked the second straight home win for the Hurricane, as Tulsa knocked off Fresno State, second in the WAC at the time, by a score of 68-65. page 4/tulsa golden hurricane basketball final release JOHN PHILLIPS ANNOUNCES RESIGNATION... Tulsa s John Phillips (Oklahoma State 73) announced his resignation on December 25. He was in his fourth season as head coach of the Golden Hurricane and his eighth year on the Tulsa coaching staff. Phillips had a successful tenure at Tulsa, both as an assistant coach and head coach. In three-plus seasons as head coach, Phillips compiled an overall record of 61-42 for a.592 winning percentage. Phillips ranks 10th on the career victories list and became only the second coach in school history to win 50 games in his first two seasons. Phillips was only the fourth coach in school history to lead his team to back-to-back 20 wins seasons in the first two years as head coach. He led the Hurricane to a 27-7 overall mark in the 2001-02 season and 23-10 in his second year. During his seven-plus seasons on the coaching staff, Tulsa posted a record of 161-78 (.674), won the Western Athletic Conference regular season title once (1999-00), shared the WAC Championship twice (1998-99 and 2001-02) and won the WAC Tournament Championship once (2003). The Hurricane made four NCAA Tournament appearances, advancing to the second round all four years and to the 2000 NCAA South Regional finals, and won the 2001 NIT Championship. A longtime Oklahoman, Phillips became Tulsa s 28th head basketball coach on April 9, 2001. WHO WOULD HAVE THUNK IT... Normally, solid free throw shooting means the difference between a close win and a narrow loss... in two wins, Tulsa defied those odds... Tulsa captured a 68-65 win over Fresno State at home, and converted only 6-of-17 from the free throw line for a percentage of.353... in a 65-54 win over UTEP at home, Tulsa again only shot.357 from the free throw line, converting 5-of-14 from the line... Tulsa did, however, connect on 49-percent from the field vs. Fresno State and 48-percent against UTEP... in losses at UTEP and Fresno State, Tulsa reversed its bad free throw shooting by shooting percentages of.905 and.857, respectively, in those two games. MCDADE ADDS SCORING PUNCH... Red-shirt freshman Brett McDade scored in double digits in 13 of the final 15 games, and averaged 14.2 points (213) over the final 15 games, while in 13 games before that, McDade scored 57 points for a 4.4 scoring average... McDade s 270 points this season is the fourth most in school history for a freshman... he was 11 points shy of tying Greg Harrington (1998-99) for fourth place on the school s all-time freshman scoring list... McDade scored 15 points against both Fresno State and San Jose State, while he had 18 points vs. Northern Arizona, 17 points against Nevada, 22 and eight points vs. Hawaii, 13 points against UTEP and Boise State, 12 points vs. Rice, 11 points vs. Fresno State, 10 points vs. San Jose State, 18 at SMU and 14 at Louisiana Tech... McDade shot.511 percent from the field (72-of-141) and.392 from three-point range (20-of- 51) in the final 15 contests... against Northern Arizona, McDade Tulsa Freshman Scoring List 1. Three Tulsa juniors saw significantly more playing time in 2003-04 as sophomores than in their true freshman seasons... forward Anthony Price averaged 28.4 minutes as compared to 8.8 minutes as a freshman, an increase of 19.6 minutes... Price averaged 8.2 points and 3.0 rebounds more as a sophomore than in 2002-03... guard Seneca Collins averaged 23.9 minutes last year, up 16.6 minutes from 7.3 minutes his freshman season... Sophomore Charles Ramsdell is a two-sport athlete for the Hurricane. After the 2003-04 basketball season, Ramsdell moved to the track as he completed the season finishing second in the high jump with a jump of 6 11 at the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships. His jump also established a new school record. Tulsa completed its seventh year in the Donald W. Reynolds Center with a 79-26 record for a.752 winning percentage. Among those 79 wins, 58 have been by double-digits. Tulsa has a 27-10 non-conference record at the Reynolds Center. Jarius Glenn was an all-defensive WAC selection for the last two seasons. For the past 25 seasons Tulsa has had at least one all-conference selection. In school history Tulsa has had only four foreign-born scholarship athletes on the basketball team. Two of them Guilherme Teichmann, from Santa Cruz, Brazil, and Oswaldo Gonzalez from Caracas, Venezuela are on this year s roster. Over the last four seasons, Tulsa has scored double-figure wins in 46 of 67 victories. Although he may be the shortest player on the roster, Brett McDade has the team s highest vertical jump of 37.5 inches. DOUBLE-DIGIT WINS...
