Sounders FC have won the last two meetings between the teams at CenturyLink Field, including a 2-1 win last May 3 in the only encounter between the clubs. Coaches record: Sigi Schmid vs. PHI: P7 W3 L2 D2 Jim Curtin vs. SEA: first game PHILADELPHIA UNION Philadelphia Union suffered their second consecutive defeat, falling 5-1 to the LA Galaxy on Saturday evening at StubHub Center. Union are in ninth place in the Eastern Conference with 15 points from 17 matches. LAST MATCH The Galaxy took the lead in the 23rd minute. Gyasi Zardes hit the left post with a shot from the heart of the area, but it bounced directly back to Baggio Husidic, who slotted home the rebound. The lead was doubled in the 35th when Zardes crossed the ball low from the left and into open territory. Juninho stepped forward to slot it home from the top of the box. LA put the game away in a four-minute sequence starting in the 56th minute. Zardes played a through ball for Keane on the left to start a counter then raced to the penalty area for the return pass, volleying a bouncing ball into the upper-right corner. C.J. Sapong struck for Union two minutes later, taking a feed in the middle of the penalty area from Andrew Wenger, turning against three defenders, and firing home. But Stefan Ishizaki made it 4-1 a minute later, in the 59th, with a volley past goalkeeper Bryan Sylvestre after Omar Gonzalez headed a Juninho free kick back into the middle of the Philly penalty area from the back post. The rout was complete in the 65th minute when Sebastian Lletget finished a square ball from Zardes in the middle of the box. Union manager Jim Curtin made two changes to the team that dropped a 2-1 decision to New York City FC at PPL Park. Raymon Gaddis came into the back four for Fabinho, and Zach Pfeffer started out wide in place of Sebastien Le Toux. PHILADELPHIA UNION (4-2-3-1): Brian Sylvestre - Raymon Gaddis, Maurice Edu, Richard Marquez, Sheanon Williams - Vincent Nogueira (Fred 66), Brian Carroll (Ethan White 72) - Zach Pfeffer, Cristian Maidana, Andrew Wenger (Fabinho 66) - C.J. Sapong. MLS GAME INFORMATION

TEAM NEWS Union matched the heaviest defeat in club history in the loss at the LA Galaxy. Union had allowed five goals on three previous occasions in the club s five seasons; the 5-1 loss equaled a defeat by the similar scoreline in a 2013 loss to New England. Everyone has to take a good hard look in the mirror when you get outplayed like that. It starts with myself, but all of the guys as well, it was disappointing, said Union manager Jim Curtin. I thought we actually had in the first 25 minutes some chances and started well, had two or three to get a goal, we don t. They were on fire, they beat us soundly. We don t have time to feel sorry for ourselves, we have to pick our heads up and get back to work and try and get a result against Seattle. It was a second consecutive loss for Union, and a third in the last four matches. Union have lost seven times in their last 10 league games (with three victories). There are two ways to go about it. You can take a lot of things from it; a lot of poor things to take from it. But you can also take the result as it is and move forward, said Andrew Wenger. It s a long season, a lot of games to be played and move past it. We started brightly, and then just lost a bit of our rhythm. They countered and took advantage of that. Said Brian Carroll: The good thing is we have a quick turnaround and we get to play Seattle on Wednesday at home. We have to take what we can from this game, and improve and look deep; put on a much better result. At times we had good possession, and at times we competed well, but they were just better on the night. Then we had some incredible plays around goal and dug ourselves a whole that we couldn t get out of. C.J. Sapong scored a goal for a third consecutive match after netting vs. the Galaxy, and now has a goal in four of the last five games. The three-game goalscoring streak is a career-long for Sapong. Wenger collected his second assist in the last four matches, his only two of the season. Wenger has not scored a goal this season. Zach Pfeffer made his first league start since May 9, coming in on the right side of midfield and playing the full 90 minutes. Pfeffer had made five consecutive appearances as a substitute. Winger Sebastien Le Toux suffered a grade 2 MCL sprain in the U.S. Open Cup fourth-round match at midweek and will miss 2-4 weeks. Raymon Gaddis returned to the lineup after a four-match absence, coming in at right back and playing the full 90 minutes. To have Sheanon [Williams], Ray and [Fabinho] in this tough stretch is a good thing because all three guys are capable starters in MLS, Curtin said. All three guys have done a good job. Ray coming back now is a positive off the injury. We ll have to use all three in a smart way, but I feel confident in all three getting the job done. SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC Seattle Sounders FC suffered their second loss in three matches in league play, falling 2-0 to the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday afternoon at CenturyLink Field. Sounders FC are in a tie for first place in the Western Conference with 29 points from 16 matches. LAST MATCH The Quakes took the lead in the 28th minute. As the ball moved from left to right along the top of the Sounders FC penalty area. Sanna Nyassi roamed forward to control a Matias Perez Garcia pass along the right channel. Nyassi took one touch into the box before rifling his attempt just past the outstretched arm of a diving Stefan Frei and into the top left corner of the goal. The lead was doubled in the 73rd minute after Perez Garcia danced his way through three Seattle defenders in the center of the park before placing his left-footed finish past Frei and into the upper corner. Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid made three changes to the team that strolled to a 3-0 win against FC Dallas at CenturyLink Field. Brad Evans came into the back four for Zach Scott, and Cristian Roldan and Marco Pappa came into the team in place of Gonzalo Pineda and Clint Dempsey. SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC (4-2-3-1): Stefan Frei - Tyrone Mears, Brad Evans (Zach Scott 46), Chad Marshall, Dylan Remick - Micheal Azira, Cristian Roldan - Thomás (Aaron Kovar 60), Andy Rose (Victor Mansaray 78), Marco Pappa - Lamar Neagle. TEAM NEWS Sounders FC lost at home in league play for the first time since March 14 in the defeat by San Jose. Sounders FC have lost twice this season at CenturyLink Field both times against the Earthquakes. I wish I could explain it, Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid said. We d do a lot better against them if I could explain it. I think they caught us on a good day for them from a standpoint of where our team was. But obviously they re a team that has had success against us and we ve got to figure out a way to turn that around. Clint Dempsey was not available for the match, serving the first match of his three-match ban following the midweek defeat by Portland in the U.S. Open Cup. Obafemi Martins also suffered a groin injury in that match which could put him out 3-6 weeks. MLS GAME INFORMATION

I think the guys up top that we normally have are very good on the ball. They help us sustain possession, Cristian Roldan said. When you take out those two guys, it becomes a very different game for us. I thought in the first half we had a little more possession, but towards the second we were chasing the game and we just kind of went for it and kicked the ball forward. With the first-choice strike pair unavailable, Lamar Neagle operated as a lone striker. Marco Pappa returned from international duty with Guatemala to fill one wide attacking role, and Thomás made a second consecutive start on the other flank. I think when the other team sees that those guys aren t playing, maybe they think they can press a little higher, that they don t have to be worried about a guy like Oba s speed or a guy like Clint s technical ability, defender Zach Scott said. We ve got to find different ways to score, then. We can t rely on those two. We ve got to be a little more dynamic and a little less predictable. Roldan played as a deep-lying central midfielder for the first time with Sounders FC. Each of his five previous starts had come in a wide midfield role. Brad Evans returned to the starting lineup after a two-match absence, again reprising his role as a central defender, but he came off at the halftime break in favor of Zach Scott. At the end of the day, I thought the guys put in a good effort, Schmid said. I thought we got around the goal but our quality at the final finish wasn t as good as it needed to be. I m disappointed but at the same token, I m proud of the effort the guys put it in. Said midfielder Micheal Azira: It s been a long week, playing Open Cup on Tuesday and playing Saturday, it takes a lot out of you. But this is a team, you know? A team will always move on without [missing players]. We re unlucky, we miss them, but we can t do anything about it. It s out of our control. MLS GAME INFORMATION

Starts with myself, but all of the guys as well, it was disappointing. I thought we actually had in the first 25 minutes some chances and started well, had two or three to get a goal, we don t. And then a good team like the Galaxy, get good looks around goal and they punish you. They were on fire tonight, they beat us soundly. We don t have time to feel sorry for ourselves, we have to pick our heads up and get back to work and try and get a result against Seattle on Wednesday. Curtin on takeaways: We ll look at the tape obviously, and learn from it. But the first 25, a couple of good things happen, but it s all for nothing when you don t put together a full 90 minutes. We were not able to do that, we were outclassed tonight in all ways. So again, they are a very strong team, and they deserved all three points tonight. Andrew Wenger on takeaways: There are two ways to go about it. You can take a lot of things from it; a lot of poor things to take from it. But you can also take the result as it is and move forward. It s a long season, a lot of games to be played and move past it. We started sprightly, and then just lost a bit of our rhythm. They countered and took advantage of that. Brian Carroll on takeaways: Wake up call. The good thing is we have a quick turn around and we get to play Seattle on Wednesday at home. We have to take what we can from this game, and improve and look deep; put on a much better result. At times we had good possession, and at times we competed well, but they were just better on the night. Then we had some incredible plays around goal and dug ourselves a whole that we couldn t get out of.

SEATTlE SOuNdERS FC AT PHIlAdElPHIA union JuNE 24, 2015-4:00 P.M. PT THIS WEEK AT PHIlAdElPHIA union SERIES NOTES Sounders FC leads the all-time MLS regular season series with Philadelphia at 3-3-2, but has failed to record a win in three matches at PPL Park (0-1-2). The Rave Green spoiled the Union s inaugural match with a 2-0 win at CenturyLink Field in the 2010 season-opener. Sounders FC did come away with a win at PPL Park in last season s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final, with the Rave green earning a 3-1 extra-time result. From a statistical perspective, the two sides have been even at nine goals apiece, while Philadelphia holds a slim shot advantage at 79-78. The Union have struck late in this series, scoring seven of its nine goals in the second half. Former Sounder Sebastien Le Toux has been dangerous in the series for Philadelphia, leading all players with three assists and 14 shots. A b O u T P H I l A d E l P H I A Philadelphia sits ninth in the Eastern Conference with 15 points (4-10-3) and has a league-worst 30 goals allowed and a minus-11 goal differential. The club has earned three of its four wins at home (3-4-1) and holds an even goal differential (8-8). After winning just once in its first 11 matches this season (1-7-3), the Union has won three of its past six, but is coming off a disappointing 5-1 loss to the LA Galaxy on Saturday. Since joining MLS as an expansion franchise in 2010, Philadelphia has gone 55-75-73 and has yet to appear in the MLS Cup Playoffs.
