What is Roller Derby? Flat Track Roller Derby is a fast-paced contact team sport that requires speed, strategy and athleticism. The flat track version of the sport evolved in 2001, and has quickly grown to encompass more than 400 leagues worldwide. This is in large part due to the ease of setting up a flat track. It can be done on any flat surface that is suitable for skating, such as skating rinks, basketball courts, parking lots and even aeroplane hangars. This greatly reduces the capital needed to start up a roller derby league, and allows small groups of people to get a fledgling league off the ground. The DIY spirit that drives the sport allows roller derby leagues to create their own unique identities and adapt their structures to reflect their local communities. (WFTDA 2010) Roller Derby is a fast-paced game played on an oval flat track by women on roller skates. Two teams of blockers compete to get their jammer through the pack of blockers to score points. The bouts are split into 2 x 30 minute halves that are made up of jams that can last up to 2 minutes each. Each game (bout) consists of two 30 minute halves, which are made up of an unlimited number of jams that last 2 minutes or less. A jam consists of 2 teams, 5 players a side. The positions are 1 pivot (sets the pace), 1 jammer (scores the points) and 3 blockers (which form the pack and try to stop the opposing jammer and assist their own jammer through). The game is played on a flat track with very strict rules on where and how you make contact with the opposing team. The jammer scores points by skating through the pack and gaining 1 point for each opposing team members she passes per lap. The bouts are fast and strategic with big hits and crazy wipe-outs. Combine this with cheeky displays of defiant femininity and alter-ego pumped rollergirls, you have got an excellent spectator sport ask anyone who has been to a bout. Roller Derby is quickly gaining popularity across the nation and promising to become the hottest thing since the invention of wheels. Contrary to many popular opinions, roller girls are NOT over-aggressive, or crude and crass and are NOT out to hurt each other. We are dedicated athletes with respect for each other and for the sport we love. Derby girls are business professionals, teachers, homemakers and everything in-between. We are dedicated to improving our communities and giving women of all ages, shapes, and sizes something to aspire to by finding their own inner roller girl. Roller Derby is a Full-Contact sport with attitude and style nothing is faked or staged. Real girls. Real hits. Real falls. Real action. Real fun.
