The Badgers will go head-to-head with nine other league teams over the course of three days at Purdue s Boilermaker Aquatic Center. The meet will consist of a preliminaries session each morning at 11 a.m. and a finals session for the same events at 6 p.m. Last time out The Badgers closed out their dual meet season with a pair of losses in the Big Ten Tri Duals in Minneapolis, Minn., Jan. 30-31. Minnesota defeated the UW, 237-116, while the Badgers also fell to Purdue, 222-131. Previewing the championships UW enters the Big Ten Championships unranked in the CSCAA Top 25 but ranked 17th according to Swim- Rankings.com. In all, seven of the league s 10 teams are among the top 25 in at least one of the major rankings. The Badgers return nine athletes who scored at last year s Big Ten championships, including seniors Scott Rice and Kyle Sorensen, who each scored top-10 finishes in six different events. As was the case in the women s conference meet last week, numerous Big Ten records are expected to fall at the men s championships. Already this season, Rice has set new school records in the 100 fly (46.54) and 200 fly (1:42.53), while Phil Davies clocked a new school standard in the 100 freestyle (43.50). Rice enters the meet as the Badgers top championship threat, leading the conference and ranking fourth nationally in the 200 fly. He also is a close second to Michigan s Chris Brady in the 100 fly and ranks fourth in the league in the 400 IM. Davies, meanwhile, is ranked fourth in the conference in the 100 freestyle and fifth among league swimmers in the 50 freestyle entering the meet. The Badgers saw three school records fall while in Austin, with senior Scott Rice toppling the previous UW marks in both the 100 and 200 butterfly. Rice s time of 1:42.53 in the 200 fly obliterated the record he previously held in the event and earned him an automatic berth in the NCAA championships. Also, junior Phil Davies put himself atop the school s all-time list with a swim of 43.50 in the 100 freestyle. Rice actually lowered the school record in both events twice, in each case setting a new mark in the prelims before lowering it in the event finals. In the finals of the 200 fly, Rice battled Arizona s Alexander Tipton for a runner-up finish in an outstanding race. Tipton took the event by just one-tenth of a second. In addition to NCAA marks in both butterfly events, Rice also earned NCAA consideration with his time of 1:46.65 in the 200 individual medley and was part of the Badgers teams that scored NCAA B cuts in the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay. Davies, meanwhile, was part of all five UW relays that earned NCAA consideration, including both medley relays and the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relays. Davies also posted an NCAA B cut in the 50 freestyle, meaning he will receive NCAA consideration in seven different events. Also posting NCAA B qualifying times in individual events were freshman Brett Nagle in the 500 freestyle (4:21.83) and senior Mike Hopkins in the 200 backstroke (1:44.78). Along with Davies, Kyle Sorensen had his hand in all three of the Badgers freestyle relays, with the duo joined by Conner Andrews and Wes Lagerhausen in the 200 and 400 free relays. Nagle and Kyle Thompson were the other half of UW s entry in the 800 free relay. Northwestern DUAL The Badgers evened their overall record (2-2) and record in Big Ten Conference duals (1-1) with a win over Northwestern last Thursday (Nov. 13) at the UW Natatorium. The victory, which came after the Badgers claimed wins in 12 of the meet s 16 events, snapped a four-meet losing streak against the Wildcats.

In total, 10 different Badgers won an event, either individually or as part of a relay team, for the Badgers. Senior Scott Rice continued his winning ways for the Badgers by winning the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:50.72 and then claiming the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 50.36. Rice also contributed to a UW win in the 200 medley relay, combining with junior Derrick O Donnell, junior Dan Koening and junior Phil Davies to take the race in a season-best time of 1:32.77. O Donnell also picked up a pair of individual wins in the 200 breaststroke (2:06.94) and in the 100 backstroke (50.58). The Badgers made it 2-for-2 in the relay events, with the foursome of senior Kyle Sorensen, sophomore Fraser Roberts, freshman Cole Scarbrough and sophomore Conner Andrews winning in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:22.95. Sorensen also won the 50 free (21.01) and took third in both the 100 freestyle (46.27) and 100 butterfly (51.35). Davies captured first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.55. It was the second time Davies had won the event this year and matched the team s top time for the season. Freshman Brett Nagle was victorious for the fourth time this year, winning the 1000-yard freestyle. It was his second win in the event, finishing in a time of 9:33.21. The Badgers also swept the two diving events, with sophomore Caleb Percevecz taking the 1-meter and 3-meter events. He won the 1-meter competition with a score of 300.08 and the 3-meter board with a 338.03. arizona DUAL Wisconsin put up a strong fight, but it wasn t enough as the team fell to the third-ranked Arizona Wildcats, 173-126. The Badgers captured first in six of the evening s events, including two individual wins by senior Scott Rice (Des Moines, Wash.) and two overall by senior Kyle Sorensen (Palatine, Ill.) and junior Phil Davies (Rye, N.Y.). Rice continued his impressive 2008 campaign with victories in the 100 and 200-yard butterfly. After finishing the events in times of 50.15 and 1:50.28, respectively, Rice upped his season win total to seven in just three meets. Sorensen garnered his first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.00, while Davies picked his up grabbed his in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 45.55. The two then teamed up with freshman Wes Lagerhausen (Fontana, Wis.) and sophomore Conner Andrews (Nashotah, Wis.) to win the 200-yard freestyle relay race with a mark of 1:22.78. Wisconsin s other top finish came in the 500-yard freestyle. Freshman Brett Nagle (Portland, Ore.) posted his third victory of the season as he finished the race in a time of 4:37.02. iowa Meet Senior Scott Rice (Des Moines, Wash.) won three races and the University of Wisconsin men s swimming and diving team won five of the final seven events, but it wasn t enough to overcome Iowa. The Hawkeyes defeated the Badgers 166-134. Rice was the bright spot on the night for the Badgers winning three events. His first victory came in the 200-yard butterfly as he finished in a time of 1:52.31. He then went on to win the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 50.32 and the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:52.71. Junior Derrick O Donnell (McFarland, Wis.) broke through for Wisconsin in the 100-yard backstroke. He won the race with a time of 50.36. Senior Mike Hopkins (Wilmington, Del.) also proved victorious Friday night. He captured the 200-yard backstroke in a time 1:50.72. Freshman Brett Nagle (Portland, Ore.) won his second race of the season as he claimed first in the 500-yard freestyle. He finished the race in a time of 4:35.99. The Badgers also picked up a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of freshman Wes Lagerhausen (Fontana, Wis.), junior Phil Davies (Rye, N.Y.), sophomore Conner Andrews (Nashotah, Wis.) and senior Kyle Sorensen (Palatine, Ill.) took first with a time of 3:02.80. UW-Milwaukee DUAL Wisconsin swept all 12 events as it opened its season with a 154-65 win over UW-Milwaukee. Senior Scott Rice and junior Derrick O Donnell each won two races on the evening. Rice won the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard IM, while O Donnell captured first in the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard breaststroke.
