With the win vs. Wisconsin, Purdue s RPI improved 26 spots to No. 61 on NCAA.com. The Boilermakers have played seven teams in the top-35 of the RPI, with wins over No. 10 Ohio State and No. 31 Wisconsin. FahKara Malone had a headline generating day on Sunday. The 5-foot-3 senior recorded her 1,000th point, grabbed her 300th career rebound, dished out her 100th assist of the season and most impressively, set the school record for career steals. She currently has 329 steals as a Boilermaker. Jodi Howell owns the Big Ten record for career three-point percentage (min. of 100 made) and is tied for the Purdue record. Howell moved into a tie with Ukari Figgs for third all time at Purdue with 174 made threes. Three Boilermakers have made 20 or more consecutive free throws this season. Rayburn connected on a school-record 38, followed by a streak of 22 that ended vs. Iowa. Howell hit 20 consecutive before a miss at Penn State and freshman KK Houser hit 23 before missing at Iowa. Novi Sad, Serbia (Isidora Sekulic) 0.8 0.9 0.2 The Opponent Big Ten-leading No. 7/9 Ohio State (23-3, 11-2) is coming off an 86-73 win at Penn State. Ohio State has a three-game lead over second-place Purdue (12-11, 8-5) and its two conference losses came in the Hoosier state, at Purdue and at Indiana. Individually, the Buckeyes are led by 6-foot-4 junior center Jantel Lavender, who is averaging a doubledouble this season with 20.8 ppg and 10.3 rpg, and is followed by sophomore guard Samantha Prahalis 16.5 ppg, 8.0 apg and 1.7 spg. OSU s starting five averages 7.7 ppg per game or better, and have accounted for 78.4 percent of the Buckeyes points this season (1,618 of 2,065). The Series This marks the 63rd meeting between Purdue and Ohio State, with the Buckeyes leading the series 36-26. Ohio State is the only Big Ten school to own a winning record against the Boilermakers which is due in large part to a 20-game winning streak from 1976-90. The Buckeyes have enjoyed the most recent success in the series, winning four of the last five contests, but the two schools are an even 10-10 in the last 20 games. Earlier this season, unranked Purdue defeated No. 5/4 Ohio State 63-61 in Mackey to break the Buckeyes four-game win streak. The two schools met three times last season with OSU taking all three games, including a 67-66 win over the Boilermakers in the Big Ten Tournament championship game. Next Up The Boilermakers return to Mackey Arena to play host to Penn State at 2 p.m. on Valentine s Day. The game is designated as Purdue s Pink Zone event to promote breast cancer awareness and the contest will be available via live video web stream on the bigtnetwork.com. Upcoming Promotions Purdue s Pink Zone event will feature a health information fair in the Mackey Arena concourse before the Penn State game, fans can donate money for a pink tennis ball toss at halftime, there will be a silent auction of the pink and white Nike jerseys and pink t-shirts will be on sale with a $1 going to Susan G. Komen for the Cure and $1 to the Purdue Cancer Center. The Last Time Out The Boilermakers led for all of two seconds in Sunday s game against Wisconsin when Chelsea Jones hit the gamewinning shot from the right baseline with two seconds on the clock. It was the first game winner of her career and the eight point of the night for the sophomore. Brittany Rayburn led Purdue with 19 points, while KK Houser contributed 10 points and Alex Guyton tied her career-best with eight. FahKara Malone recorded six points, four rebounds, six assists and three steals in a clutch performance that was also a record setter. With her second theft of the afternoon, Malone surpassed two-time All-American Katie Douglas mark of 327 career steals and holds the school record with 329. With a breakaway layup for Purdue s first tie with 2:59 to play, Malone brought her career point total to 1,000. She is the 25th Boilermaker to earn this distinction. Malone s six assists came versus zero turnovers and pushed her season assist total to 101, the fourth year in a row that she has dished out 100 or more assists. She becomes just the fourth Boilermaker to accomplish that feat. Improving Down The Stretch Purdue has won 4 of its last 5 games and is 7-0 in home conference games. In their 13 wins this season, some trends stand out. Brittany Rayburn s scoring average is nearly seven points higher in the Boilermaker victories - 18.3 ppg in wins vs. 11.5 ppg in the 11 losses. Purdue is averaging just 15.8 turnovers in the wins compared to 22.5 in losses and is outscoring opponents by an average of almost six points a game from the free throw line in victories (15.6 made free throws to opponents 9.8) while making 11.3 free throws to opponents 14.9 in defeat. Ranked Opponents The Boilermakers beat ranked opponents in consecutive games for the 10th time in school history and the first time since 2006-07. That year, No. 12 Purdue defeated No. 22 Michigan State 64-61 on March 4, 2007, in the Big Ten Tournament and the next night knocked off No. 5 Ohio State 64-52 to win the championship. Earlier in that season, the 12th-ranked Boilermakers beat No. 23 Washington 88-64 on Nov. 17, in Mackey Arena in the Preseason WNIT and then traveled to Baylor for a 69-55 victory on Nov. 19, for the WNIT championship. This season, Purdue s wins over No. 4 Ohio State and No. 23 Penn State are the first consecutive victories over ranked opponents when unranked. The Boilermakers are 2-2 this year versus ranked opponents and have beaten at least two ranked opponents for the 17th consecutive season.

Impressive Defensive Numbers As of Feb. 8, Purdue is ranked 18th nationally in three-point field goal percentage defense, allowing just 27.0 from long range. Purdue is second in the conference in three-point field goal defense and in scoring defense. In the win over No. 5/4 Ohio State, the Boilermakers limited the Buckeyes to 35.8 percent from the field - 11.8 percent below their season average. Sharing The Rock The Boilermakers have assisted on 61.1 percent (310-499) of their made field goals this season. The Boilermakers are led by FahKara Malone s team-best 101 assists. Malone tied her career high for assists by dishing out 10 at Northwestern while contributing 11 points to record the first double-double of her career. Malone is fifth at Purdue on the career assist charts (486), is the Big Ten s active assists leader and is ranked third in the conference this season. Three Ball Senior Jodi Howell hit her first four three-point attempts in the first half against Illinois, finishing 4 of 9 from long range with a team-high 12 points in the win. Howell holds the Big Ten record (minimum of 100 made) and is tied for the school record for career three-point field goal percentage at 41.9 percent (174 of 415). She has hit at least one three-pointer in 21 games this season and 83 times in her career. Howell s 174 made threes ties her with assistant coach Ukari Figgs for fourth all time at Purdue. Within Reach In the final second of the first half vs. Wisconsin, FahKara Malone set the Purdue career steals record. The Evansville, Ind., native finished the game with three steals and has 329 career steals, while former two-time All-American Katie Douglas is second with 327. Malone is just the fourth player in school history to record 300 or more steals. The 5-foot-3 point guard is the Big Ten s career steals leader among active players, is ranked 33rd nationally with a season average of 2.8 steals per game and is second in the conference behind Illinois Lacey Simpson. Houser Coming Into Her Own Nebraska native KK Houser scored 10 points in the win vs. Wisconsin. In back-to-back upset victories over ranked opponents, Houser recorded a career-best 18 points in each. Against Ohio State, Houser s 18 points were a gamehigh and she recorded five rebounds, four assists and a steal while hitting 8 of 8 free throws. Her 18 points at No. 23 Penn State came with six rebounds, two assists, two steals and 13 of 13 free throws, including two with five seconds left in overtime to seal the victory. In the loss at Iowa, Houser pulled down a career and team-high eight rebounds. Rayburn Putting Up Big Numbers Sophomore Brittany Rayburn, the 2009 Big Ten Sixth Player of the Year as a freshman, scored a career-high 28 points en route to the Boilermakers best offensive production of the season, in an 81-59 win over Iowa on Jan. 17. In the 80-76 overtime victory at Penn State, Rayburn recorded a team-high 26 points, marking the fourth time this season she has tallied that total and the eighth game this season with 20 or more points. Rayburn leads the team in scoring at 15.2 ppg average, the seventh-best average in the Big Ten. Jones Coming Up Big In the Wisconsin win, Chelsea Jones hit the game-winning shot from the right baseline with two seconds on the clock. It was the first game winner of her career and the eight point of the night for the sophomore. Since the holiday break, Jones has stepped up her game. In the win at Penn State, Jones scored 12 points and tied Sam Ostarello for team-high honors with seven rebounds. She was active defensively, credited with just one steal but coming up with multiple deflections. Against Indiana she recorded her first career double-double with career highs of 14 points and 11 rebounds. In the tough loss to No. 3 Notre Dame she broke her career high with 16 points and dished out a personal best four assists to go along with six rebounds. Finding A Way Against Illinois, Purdue shot just 27.0% (17-63) from the field and was outrebounded 43-38 but defeated Illinois 53-48. The Boilermakers forced 23 turnovers while turning it over just 14 times and made more free throws than the Illini attempted. Tipoff Times For Michigan And Michigan State Game times for Purdue s final two regular season contests have been set. Purdue plays host to Michigan State on Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. ET and at Michigan on Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. Both games will be streamed on bigtennetwork.com. Purdue head coach Sharon Versyp has led her teams to two Big Ten Tournament championships and two NCAA Tournament Elite Eight appearances in her first three years at her alma mater. Coming into this season, she has compiled a 75-32 record (.701 win percentage), won over 73 percent of the Big Ten regular season games and has led the Boilermakers to the Big Ten Tournament championship game each year, winning twice. Equally impressive are the team s academic achievements under Versyp s guidance. For two years in a row, the Boilermakers have earned a team GPA of 3.14, an improvement of nearly half a point from the year before she became head coach. In 2008-09, Purdue finished with a 25-11 record after defeating Charlotte, No. 11 North Carolina and Rutgers before falling 74-68 to No. 4 Oklahoma in the Elite Eight. Versyp guided the Boilermakers to a second-place finish in the Big Ten regular season despite losing point guard FahKara Malone to injury for half of conference play. Purdue returned to the title game of the Big Ten Tournament but failed in its quest of a third consecutive championship by the slimmest of margins. The Boilermakers missed a shot at the buzzer to give Ohio State a 67-66 victory. Purdue s 2008 NCAA Tournament win against Utah was Versyp s 50th Purdue career victory and she earned her 75th school win against Rutgers in the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Versyp returned to her alma mater as Purdue s eighth head coach on April 10, 2006. Versyp, a former Boilermaker point Head Coach Sharon Versyp - Fourth Year at Purdue - School Record 88-43 (46-19 Big Ten) Career Record 205-108 (55-26 Big Ten) guard, has created success everywhere she s been. As a collegiate head coach she has compiled a 192-97 record in nine seasons. As a player at Purdue she led the team to three consecutive winning seasons at a time when the program had enjoyed only one winning campaign in the previous 10 years. In her first year as head coach at Purdue, Versyp led the Boilermakers to a 31-6 record that included a second-place finish in the Big Ten regular season, a Big Ten Tournament title and an appearance in the NCAA Elite Eight. Versyp was named the 2007 WBCA Region VI Coach of the Year. Versyp s win percentage in 2006-07 of 83.8 percent (31-6) is the fifth-best in a season at Purdue and tops for a first-year coach. The 31 wins equals the second-most in school history and marks only the third time the Boilermakers have achieved a 30-plus win season. Versyp is the only first-year head coach to achieve a 30-win record. Versyp was the head coach at Indiana prior to Purdue, where she led her team to a 19-14 season, 9-7 in the Big Ten and the quarterfinals of the post-season WNIT. The nine-game improvement was the second largest turn-around in school history for a first-year head coach. Prior to her stint with the Hoosiers, Versyp was the head coach at Maine for five seasons where she amassed a 98-51 record, including a 67-19 America East Conference record. Versyp s teams won three straight America East regular season championships (2003, 2004, 2005) and in 2004 also won the America East Tournament title earning an NCAA Tournament berth. It s Academic Purdue had three players named second team Academic All-District by CoSIDA. Senior Jodi Howell and sophomores Chelsea Jones and Brittany Rayburn were recognized for their combination of academic and athletic success. The Free Throw Story Purdue struggled at the charity stripe in the loss at Iowa, hitting a season low 41.7 percent (10 of 24) from the line. In the seven games prior, the Boilermakers had hit 101 of 124 free throws for 81.5 percent. Before those games, Purdue was shooting just 65.2 percent. The bulk of the improvement can be attributed to four players getting to the line and connecting. KK Houser, Jodi Howell, Chelsea Jones and Brittany Rayburn were a combined 84 of 93 (90.3%) in the seven-game stretch. Rayburn, Howell and KK Houser all have hit 20 or more consecutive free throws this season. Earlier in the year, Rayburn connected on a school-record 38 straight, then had another streak of 22 that ended on Jan. 17. Howell had a streak of 20 consecutive makes that ended at Penn State and freshman KK Houser hit 23 free throws before a miss at Iowa. Doubling Up Freshman Sam Ostarello, from Fort Pierre, S.D., leads the Boilermakers in rebounding at 5.4 rpg despite averaging less than 18 minutes per game. She had her best outing of the season against Evansville, tallying her first career double-double with career highs for points (17) and rebounds (14). It was Ostarello s third game with double-digit rebounds, having pulled down 12 boards against Western Illinois and at UC Riverside. Classmate Ashley Wilson has gotten into the double-digit act as well, hauling in a career-high 11 boards against Virginia on Dec. 3 and 10 more at Michigan State. Wilson is averaging 3.9 rpg in 16.9 minutes per game. Wilson Contributes Solid Minutes Freshman Ashley Wilson scored eight points in the win over Ohio State, her fourth career start. Against Iowa on Jan. 17, she got in foul trouble in the first half, but was 3 of 3 from the field for six points, three rebounds and an assists. At Wisconsin, Wilson was 3 of 3 from the field and 2 of 2 from the free throw line to record eight points, three rebounds and three steals. Big Time In The Big Ten At Home The Boilermakers are a perfect 7-0 in Big Ten games in Mackey Arena this season. Purdue is averaging 62.1 ppg, just 13.3 turnovers, outscoring Big Ten opposition by 8.6 points and limiting league foes to.350 from the field and.309 from the three-point range at home. Head Coach Sharon Versyp Versyp earned her 200th career victory with the win over Northwestern on Jan. 10. The former Boilermaker point guard, has an 88-43 record in her fourth season at Purdue and is 205-108 in her 10th season as a collegiate head coach. Versyp averaged 25 wins per season in her first three years at Purdue which is the second-best three-year average in school history, behind Kristy Curry s 26 win average. Versyp has led the Boilermakers to two Big Ten Tournament championships (2007 and 2008) and to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight twice (2007 and 2009). She will be inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame on April 24. KK Houser led the way with a game-high 18 points, Sam Ostarello scored 14 and Ashley Wilson contributed eight. Close, But No Cigar Five Boilermaker losses this season have been by five points or less, including a four-point loss to No. 3 Notre Dame. Dayton won by three points, Pepperdine by five, at Northwestern by two and to Gardner-Webb by one point on a deep three-pointer with less than 15 seconds to play. Injury Report Sophomore Chantel Poston suffered an Achilles tendon injury on Oct. 1, tearing the tendon in her right foot during a conditioning drill. She had surgery in early Oct. and is out for the season. Sophomore Alex Guyton missed the first 10 games with a stress fracture in her lower left leg, but has played every game since her season debut vs. Gardner-Webb. Miss Basketball Between the players and coaching staff, the Boilermakers have six former Miss Basketball honorees. Jodi Howell, Brittany Rayburn and head coach Sharon Versyp were all named Indiana Miss Basketball as seniors in high school and make up part of the seven total Indiana Miss Basketballs to play for Purdue. Freshman KK Houser was tabbed Miss Basketball last year for the state of Nebraska and Sam Ostarello earned Miss Basketball in South Dakota. First-year assistant coach Ukari Figgs was named Kentucky Miss Basketball. Wisdom-Hylton Returns Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton has joined the Purdue coaching staff on a temporary basis. The former Boilermaker is filling in while assistant coach Martin Clapp is on a medical leave of absence. The L.A. Sparks forward had been playing professional basketball with Ravenna Esperides in Greece. Her primary duties will include working with the post players. The 2009 Purdue graduate was selected by the Sparks as the 13th overall pick in the first round of the 2009 WNBA draft. As a senior, Wisdom-Hylton led the Boilermakers in scoring, rebounding, blocked shots and field goal percentage. She holds the school record for rebounds and blocked shots and she was part of the five-member senior class that led the Boilermakers to a 25-11 record and the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight. Wisdom-Hylton was named honorable mention All-American, first team All-Big Ten and Academic All-Big Ten in her final year. Among Nation s Best In Attendance Purdue fans loyal support makes Mackey Arena a tough place to play and has placed the Boilermakers in the top 10 in national attendance for 14-straight seasons. Purdue has finished No. 5 each of the last two years and in 2008-09, the Boilermakers averaged 8,971 fans a game. This season, Purdue welcomed fan No. 2,000,000 on Dec. 21 vs. Gardner-Webb. Going Deep The Boilermakers have a 7-3 NCAA Tournament record under head coach Sharon Versyp while advancing to the Elite Eight twice in three years. Purdue is one of only nine teams that have earned a birth in the regional finals two of the last three seasons. Arizona State, Maryland, Stanford, Tennessee, North Carolina, Rutgers and LSU have advanced at least that far twice since 2006-07, and Connecticut has done it all three years. Advancing deep into the NCAA Tournament is a tradition for the Boilermakers and every four-year player since 1990 has been to a Sweet 16 and since 1994 has been to an Elite Eight. With 16 consecutive NCAA Tournament berths, Purdue has one of the longest active streaks in NCAA Division I women s basketball. Only Tennessee (28), Stanford (22) and Connecticut (21) have longer streaks going. Senior Leadership The three seniors, Laura Garriga, Jodi Howell and FahKara Malone were chosen as team captains this season. Speed, Strength and Conditioning Freshman Ashley Wilson owns the all-time bench press record at 180 pounds, while FahKara Malone and transfer Drey Mingo are tied for second at 170 lbs. Sophomores Chelsea Jones and Samantha Woods made the greatest gains in the offseason. Jones increased her bench press by 12 lbs. to 120 lbs., her power clean by 7 kg (15.4 lbs.) to 67 kg and her squat by 10 lbs. to 170 lbs. Woods moved her bench press up 15 lbs. to 120 lbs., her power clean 5 kg (11 lbs.) to 67.5 kg and her squat increased 20 lbs. to 240 lbs. Woods won the Golden Hammer Award and Jones was tabbed Purdue s Summer Warrior. Boilermakers Ink Top-Five Recruiting Class Each of her four years at Purdue, Sharon Versyp has signed a top-15 recruiting class. The Boilermakers signed two instate stars, point guard Courtney Moses and forward Dee Dee Williams, who, along with transfers Antionette Howard and Drey Mingo, give Purdue the No. 5 national ranking according to Collegiate Girls Basketball Report. All-Star Girls Report rated the class No. 13 nationally. Last season, both Moses (Oak Hill H.S.) and Williams (Ben Davis H.S.) led their teams to the Indiana girls basketball state tournament title game, with Williams and the Giants capping off a perfect 30-0 season as state and national champions. The duo are considered leading candidates for Indiana s Miss Basketball and both are ranked in the top 100 by multiple scouting services.
