We exceeded our goal and raised more than $35,000!! Well done dolphins; you did it! Thank you to everyone that submitted funds towards the Sport-a-thon. Students and parents worked hard to raise the money and local stores provided supplies and entertainment to help make the day a success. We d like to thank Trader Joe s for a donation of 200 bananas and Smart and Final for a donation of $100, which was used to purchase more bananas, ice and granola bars for the classroom emergency kits. A special thank you is also in order to Cassie s Dance Camp for leading the students in a fun dance workout. The day was a success in great part due to the tireless efforts of many parents and staff. Many thanks to those who shared their time. Students fundraising efforts were rewarded with a raffle for some amazing prizes. Checkout the prizes and winning students: 2 tickets to the Hollywood Wax Museum / Guinness World Records (Ian F., Ms. Hanson), 2 tickets to the Aquarium of the Pacific (Atreyu M., Ms. Bova), 1 month family membership to the YMCA (Lena S., Ms. Hardy), passes to the Huntington Library Art Collections and Botanical Gardens (Audrey P., Ms. Sheaffer), Lazertag Extreme Pass: 2 hours for up to 10 people (Keenan P., Ms. Lewis), 4 guest passes to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History or Ty Warner Sea Center (Kyra M., continued on next page Advertising in this newsletter does not imply endorsement by Juanamaria Elementary School, PTA or VUSD.

Spirit Sticks This year PTA will be recognizing student achievement using Spirit Sticks. Developed by Spirit Monkey.com, Spirit Sticks are small custom-embroidered patches that students can earn, collect, and display on [their backpack]. Spirit Sticks promote school spirit and participation by providing meaningful extrinsic rewards with lasting value, beyond the school year. At Sport-a-thon, students received their first one, which was: We Like to Move it! Move It! Don t miss the next opportunity to add to the collection, which will be the Family Movie Night on Nov. 4. There will also be opportunities to purchase fun patches. All Spirit Monkey profits will be used simply to support free patches for activities, events, and awards throughout the year. They are not a school fundraiser, just a fun spirit item for the kiddos. Look soon for future sale dates ($1.00 each).

Page 4 Weathersfield Elementary Newsletter Page 4 Cross Country Message from Coach Bova "We have an incredible group of athletes who joined our Juanamaria Cross Country Team! We currently have 32 students on our team and they are doing a great job representing Juanamaria. Our team is made up of 4th and 5th grade students who practice during regularly scheduled PE time, and they compete against 10 other elementary schools at approximately 5 meets. This year, Mrs. Maryanski is co-coaching the team. We are also grateful for the help of Ms. Santana and Mr. Wolf! Please come cheer us on! We have a meet on Oct. 21 at Camino Real Park and the championship meet on Nov. 4 at Arroyo Verde Park. Girls run at 3:00 and boys at 3:15. Run, Dolphins, Run!"

Page 5 Weathersfield Elementary Newsletter Page 5 In the Spotlight: Meet Lori Redding (Office Assistant plus Cafeteria & Noon Aide) Lori Redding is the office assistant at Juanamaria, and she also does cafeteria duty in the morning and noon aide at lunchtime. Here are some fun facts about Ms. Lori: Lori moved to Ventura when she was 9, and she attended Poinsettia, Balboa and Buena High. Lori graduated from Ventura College and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in Graphic Communications. Lori then entered the workforce as an Art Director/Graphic Designer for an educational publisher. When the company went out of business, she decided to follow her passion for education and pursue a career with the VUSD. Lori started last January at Juanamaria, and feels very blessed to be part of a terrific team of dedicated professionals. Her favorite part of working at Juanamaria are the staff and kids! She loves telling the joke of the day to kids at lunchtime. In November, Lori will be expanding her role as paraeducator to kindergarteners, and she is very excited to be working with these children helping them discover the joys of learning. Lori is married to John, and they have two cats (Lucy and Ethel). She enjoys bicycling, gardening, dancing, baking, making jam, sewing, singing in a choir, and playing the flute in the Ventura County Community Concert Band.
