Fitness Tip Of The Month The number one question on everyone's mind when you start an exercise routine is, "How often should I go?" Aworkoutroutine.com has the best answer for is question: "The first thing we need to decide on is how many times we will work out per week total. This would include weight training workouts, cardio workouts, whatever. It s our overall exercise frequency. Now, this is the one that can vary the most because it depends on many factors specific to you and your goal (example: a bigger person with the primary goal of losing fat may have 4 cardio workouts per week, while a skinny person with the primary goal of building muscle may do no cardio whatsoever). Because of this, it s impossible to say exactly how often/how many times everyone should be working out per week total. However, there is 1 general rule I can pretty much definitively set in terms of everyone s overall exercise frequency. And that rule is: take at least 1 full day off per week from all forms of exercise. That means, AT THE VERY MOST, you should be exercising 6 times per week total (and again, this includes weight training, cardio, and any other form of exercise). I m setting this rule because I am pretty confident that there is no one reading this that needs to be or would benefit from working out 7 days a week. In fact, I d say that there are many people reading this who should set their maximum total exercise frequency at between 3-5 times per week depending on their goal. Why? Because it s not only NOT necessary for reaching your goal it s almost always counterproductive." Website Update Back in August of 2015, the Board of Supervisors approved to re-do the Sun 'n Lake Improvement District's website!! There is a lot that goes into completely redoing a website and after several months we are almost ready to go LIVE! On February 25th, the two website addresses associated with the Districtwww.snldistrict.org and www.livesunnlake will look completely different. The re-design will look fresh, inviting and will be a lot easier to navigate through. Community Where Did Pickleball Come From? In 1965, after playing golf one Saturday during the summer, Joel Pritchard, congressman from Washington State and Bill Bell, successful businessman, returned to Pritchard s home on Bainbridge Island, WA to find their families sitting around with nothing to do. The property had an old badminton court so Pritchard and Bell looked for some badminton equipment and could not find a full set of rackets. They improvised and started playing with ping-pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball. As the weekend progressed, the players found that the ball bounced well on the asphalt surface and soon the net was lowered to 36 inches. The following weekend, Barney McCallum was introduced to the game at Pritchard s home. Soon, the men created rules, relying heavily on badminton. A few years later in 1972 a corporation was formed to protect the creation of this new sport. The sport continues to grow worldwide as well with many new international clubs forming and national governing bodies now established in Canada and India Pickleball has a very interesting name, especially since no pickles are used. Accounts of how the name originated differ. (1)According to Joel Pritchard s wife (Joan), she started calling the game pickleball because the combination of different sports reminded me of the pickle boat in crew where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers of other boats. (2) However, according to Barney McCallum, the game was officially named after the Prichards dog Pickles who would chase the ball and run off with it. According to McCallum, The Pritchard's had a dog named Pickles, and you re having fun at a party, right? So anyways, what the heck, let s just call it pickleball. In the early years, no official name was assigned to the game. However a year or two after the game was invented, the Pritchard's purchased a cocker spaniel and named it Pickles. As the game progressed, an official name was needed and pickleball was it. Usapa.com Community Clean-Up Group Residents throughout Sun n Lake take the time several days a week to pick up trash, while walking/running. As a result, the semi-annual community clean up days have become very unproductive, because there is not a lot to clean up. Instead of organizing future clean-up days we have decided the best approach is to provide supplies to those who wish to help clean up on a regular basis. It doesn t take much time to make such a huge impact on our beautiful community. If you are interested in being a part of this group, please contact us at 382.2196 or email klockhart@snldistrict.org. www.livesunnlake.com
