www.natures-images.co.uk Great White Sharks 9th to 17th July 2017 Photographic tour with tour leader Mark Sisson

Itinerary : Days 1-7 Day 1 Sunday 9th July We will leave the UK for overnight flights to Cape Town and arrival the next morning. Day 2 Monday 10th July We will arrive in Cape Town mid-morning and make our way towards Simonstown on the western side of False Bay where we will be based for the duration of our stay. Since the prime time for great white activity is early morning we won t head out to sea on this day but take the opportunity to settle in, be briefed on the format of our forthcoming outings and start our exploration of some of the other options that this region has in terms of landscapes and wildlife, to ensure your photographic brains are fully engaged for the dramas ahead. Days 3-7 Tuesday 11th to Saturday 15th July Our plan for each and every morning is to join up with great white shark expert and photographer Chris Fallows who runs one of the very few boats licensed to operate in the waters of False Bay. We ll look to be there in time for dawn, making for the single rocky outcrop that is Seal Island and where small groups of fur seals returning after feeding run the gauntlet of the lurking great white sharks who have gathered here for just these few weeks a year when slightly slower younger seals offer a potential target for them. Page 1

Itinerary : Days 3-7 Watching for clues from the gathering Gulls we will spend our time rushing to any signs of and actual predation that s occurring and dramatic it most certainly can be. We ll also spend a short while running a decoy seal from the rear of the boat for a more controlled chance of that powerful breaching shot before mooring up for the chance of close-up encounters either from the boat or cage-diving alongside. We will have a couple of underwater compact cameras you can put your own storage cards in to use if you don t have your own for this part of our excursion. The ever popular GoPros are in their element here too. We will return to Simonstown, undoubtedly exhilarated for lunchtime leaving the afternoons free to enjoy other local wildlife photographic options including African penguins, cape baboons, the stunning birdlife of Kirstenbosch Gardens, the rock hyrax of Table Mountain and some reasonably well known scenery too! Over our main evening meal we ll have the chance to review images of the day and plan the next. On one of our days here we will forego the drama of False Bay and head further east to Gansbaai for a different great white experience. The working principles will be the same (a full excursion out to sea with cage diving opportunities too) but this is an area of less natural predation but seemingly bolder sharks around the boat which gives a greater opportunity for portrait type images and therefore fully warrants a day in the programme. Please note that all outings into False Bay are entirely weather dependant. The first time I went here during the same week in 2011 I was able to head out every morning the next 2 days after I finished the boat was not able to go. We have been very lucky on the two trips we have run subsequently in this respect but weather will determine our fate in terms of the number of days we get out to sea: safety comes first after all. These are elements beyond our control but there are always things to see and do photographically in this vibrant part of the world. Page 2

Itinerary : Days 8-9 Day 8 Sunday 16th July Since the return flights to Europe are all evening scheduled we will have a further trip out to False Bay for a last session witnessing the dramas that unfold there, with the chance to refresh and pack before making our way to the airport for the overnight return. Day 9 Monday 17th July After our overnight flight we will arrive back home. Page 3

Additional info Things to bring Our accommodation is clean and comfortable with all bedding and towels provided and so you simply need to bring yourself, and if you have any special dietary requirements please let me know!! In terms of clothing you ll obviously need plenty of warm and weatherproof clothing for our time on the boat, but when we moorup for the cage diving sessions in can be warm so flexibility is the key here. The general climate is not unlike spring here in the UK capable of being very pleasantly warm but also quite cool and chilly as well especially if we are out before or after the sun comes up. You ll need sensible footwear with a good grip for on the boat, as we will be moving at speed on occasions so you will need to keep well balanced. The waters of False Bay can be very choppy so a good supply of sea-sickness tablets such as Sturgeon should you suffer from this, although they can be bought or supplemented locally. Useful contact information: My contact number for the build up to and for the duration of the trip is: Mark: 07905569685 Please don t hesitate to contact me even if you think it is a minor question, I am here to help. Seeing a great white shark breach with absolutely no warning that it is about to happen is one of the most exhilarating experiences I have ever witnessed let alone photographed. This is the only place in the world where this behaviour is known to occur and we are here in peak season; there can be no guarantees and patience is very much required but when it happens it is a truly amazing sight. Camera equipment In terms of camera kit the main lens you will want to be using on the boat is likely to be in the 70-200mm or 100-400mm range, with a converter to hand for that bit of extra reach at times. Longer lenses are not practical or necessary as if and when they breach these are big subjects to photograph and you will have no option but to be hand holding on the boat so light flexibility is the key. That said for some of the additional opportunities you ll need the longest lens you have (300mm or 500mm would be our recommendation/choice) and then a supplementary lenses such as a 24-70mm for wide angle landscapes. You ll get the chance to decide what you want/need for each session so you won t be burdening yourself with it all of the time either. Tripods aren t necessary on the boat but will be useful for other opportunities but by no means essential for the trip as a whole. Bring plenty of compact flash cards with you as well because if you get a good day you will take a lot of images.
