RECEPTION CURRICULUM 2016-2017 The table below gives a brief outline of the curriculum areas covered in Sport in Reception. It is important for all children to master fundamental movement skills at a young age as a foundation for participation in many sports and physical activities as they grow older. We want to provide them with the right skills, confidence and motivation to be physically active. Our emphasis will be on fun alongside developing core skills such as agility, balance, co-ordination, flexibility and core strength. PE and Games lessons will be taught in classes allowing for mixed gender and mixed ability teaching. For Swimming lessons the children will split into smaller groups and will be placed in a group with children who are of a similar ability. This will allow more focused work appropriate to each child's confidence and competence in the water. YEAR 1 CURRICULUM 2016-2017 The table below gives a brief outline of the curriculum areas covered in Sport in Year 1. We believe that it is important to master fundamental movement skills at a young age as a foundation for participation in many sports and physical activities as they grow older. We want to provide them with the right skills, confidence and motivation to be physically active. Our emphasis will be on fun alongside developing core skills such as agility, balance, co-ordination, flexibility and core strength. YEAR 2 CURRICULUM 2016-2017 The table below gives a brief outline of the curriculum areas covered in Sport in Year 2. It is important to continue to develop fundamental movement skills to enable participation in many sports and physical activities as they grow older. We want to provide them with the right skills, confidence and motivation to be physically active. Our emphasis will be on fun alongside developing core skills such as agility, balance, co-ordination, flexibility and core strength. In Games lessons children will begin to experience single sex lessons to enable them to focus more on sport specific skills that need fostering before they begin Key Stage 2. In Swimming and PE lessons children are taught as a class. YEAR 3 CURRICULUM 2016-2017 The table below gives a brief outline of the curriculum areas covered in Sport in Year 3. We want to develop the right skills, confidence and motivation to enable all children to continue to be physically active. In Games children will be grouped in a variety of ways during lessons to aid teaching and improve learning. Children can expect to be in mixed ability groups and groups set by ability. The groupings are very flexible throughout the year to allow for the fact that children develop and learn at different times and will be dependant on the learning intentions. It is important to develop more specific skills in the sports in which the children will be introduced to controlled competition. Fun, skill development and teamwork are the focus but within the context of conditioned games. In Swimming children will be grouped into ability groups during lessons to enable us to cater for very specific needs in our pool. These groups will be flexible and will be reviewed at the end of each term. In PE children will be taught in mixed ability groups across two classes. COMPETITION We believe that children should experience competition in a safe and secure environment throughout their time at KHPS. These competitive situations will include: 1. House sports competitions ALL children from Nursery to Year 6 take part in Sports Day. ALL children in Year 3-6 will take part in house matches every term in one major game. ALL children in Year 4-6 will swim in the house swimming gala in the Michaelmas term. These house events develop a sense of belonging. They teach children to play by the rules; to win and lose with grace; to work together co-operatively within a team. Personal skills such as perseverance, determination and commitment are developed helping to build self-esteem. 2. Inter school competition Children from Year 3 upwards are able to take part in at least one match per term against another school. This may take the form of a fixture, tournament, festival or friendly game. We are a very large preparatory school and from time to time we can only secure fixtures with other schools for one or two teams to play because their numbers do not allow for whole year group fixtures. Teams for some of these forms of competition will be chosen on ability which allows our children to compete at a level appropriate for each child. It also provides an opportunity for children with sporting aptitude to excel. To widen the opportunities for all children to participate in inter school competition we are looking into being more creative and are in discussion with other schools regarding festivals where mixed ability teams are created and possibly even mixed boys and girls teams. A large number of our fixtures are played as away games due to restrictions in space on our school site. 3. Team sheets Team sheets are handed out to children who are asked to play in a fixture. They will receive this the week prior to the fixture. Please complete the reply slip and return it to the school as soon as possible. For details of sports fixtures please refer to the school calendar and keep an eye out in Sagitta for updates and additional fixtures.

EXTRA CURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES In addition to the curriculum lessons that every child receives each week we are able to provide clubs and activities to extend and enrich the sports opportunities at KHPS. Sports clubs are available at Swallows and Hales. Some of these are provided by external agencies and some by school staff. Clubs are available before school, at lunchtime and after school. Some of the clubs are open to all children and some are by invitation only. Whilst we would love to be able to offer clubs to every child, every night, we are restricted by space available and our fixture commitments. We will continue to keep these important opportunities under review to ensure we reach as many interested children as possible. Please refer to the extra curricular timetable produced by Mr McGrane. Squad selection Games (Netball, Rugby, Football, Cricket, Rounders) Swimming Cross country Invitation only Invitation only Invitation and Open to all Initial assessment of skills and game play in curriculum lessons at start or end of a term Invited to a trials night (based on attainment) Timed over a length in three strokes and butterfly for those who would like to Invitation based on athletics results from Summer Term Following assessments/trials children who are invited to attend squad sessions will receive notification. These additional squad sessions provide an opportunity for them to learn and play/train as a team which is vital if we are to continue to compete successfully against other schools. Throughout the term games staff will continue to monitor all the children in their groups and will invite to squads any child who warrants a place based on their ability even if they were not initially successful. Children do learn and develop at different stages and so we are flexible with our squads and allow space for additional children to join after the term has started. There is an expectation that once a child is selected for a squad they will attend the weekly squad sessions and any additional Saturday training sessions on the calendar. For a team to perform well all members of that team need to train together. It does not work well if children regularly miss training sessions or fixtures. Children should also make themselves available for fixtures and tournaments. The majority of fixtures are within the school week but increasingly we do have Saturday fixtures/tournaments. Should problems arise with availability for squad sessions and fixtures then the teacher in charge of that particular squad should be contacted as soon as possible.

COLOURS Sports Colours will be awarded to pupils at the end of the year for children in Year 4-6 who have met the following criteria: BRONZE Year 4 Represented the A team on a regular basis in 2 out of 4 main sports Consistent, high level performances as both an individual and within a team A high standard of endeavour, effort and commitment at all times Excellent sportsmanship Demonstrated a positive attitude at all times during school fixtures and squad training sessions. SILVER Year 5 Represented the A team on a regular basis in 3 out of 5 main sports Consistent, high level performances as both an individual and within a team A high standard of endeavour, effort and commitment at all times Excellent sportsmanship Demonstrated a positive attitude at all times during school fixtures and squad training sessions. GOLD Year 6 Represented the A team on a regular basis in 4 out of 5 main sports Consistent, high level performances as both an individual and within a team A high standard of endeavour, effort and commitment at all times Excellent sportsmanship Demonstrated a positive attitude at all times during school fixtures and squad training sessions. Whilst every effort will be made to work to these criteria there may be a need for consideration of other factors and in these circumstances teachers will use their professional judgement.

Players Code of Conduct Always be on time and in full school games kit. Attend all squad training sessions (Friday and Saturday sessions) and fixtures. Follow and play by the rules of the game. Always accept and respect the decisions of the referees/umpires/officials and thank them after the match. Control your temper at all times. Work hard for yourself and your team. Be a good sport. Treat all players as you would like to be treated. Cooperate with your teacher, team mates and opponents. Take part for your own enjoyment and not to please others. After a match, the captain should lead the Three Cheers and everyone should shake hands with the opposition. Always accept victory with modesty and defeat with dignity. Teamwork is vital for success. No player is more important than another. Attend match tea as a squad. Your place in a squad/team is earned through skill, commitment, punctuality, loyalty and sportsmanship. No one has an automatic right to a place in a team. IAPS CODE OF PRACTICE FOR SPECTATORS Spectators should remember the following:- 1. Children play organised sport for their own fun. They are not there solely to entertain you and they are not miniature adults nor professional sportsmen and women. 2. Do not harass or swear at players, coaches or officials. 3. Applaud good play by both sides and show respect for your team s opponents. Without them there would be no game. 4. Never ridicule or scold a child for making a mistake during a competitive match of any kind. 5. Condemn the use of violence in all forms. 6. Respect the decisions made by officials. 7. Encourage players always to play to the rules. 8. Relax and enjoy the game whether your team wins or not. 9. Remember that young people learn by example so make sure that yours is the right one!
