WHAT S IN THE GUIDE? This guide provides you with all the essential info so you can organise your trip as easily as possible and know all the best spots before you arrive. We ll cover: Fast, cheap and comfortable ways to get to Myoko Kogen. The best places to ski/snowboard for powder hounds, backcountry adventurers, park rats or families. Convenient rental equipment, lessons and backcountry tours. Accommodation for all budgets and styles - from 5 star Japanese hospitality to budget options. Top places to eat and drink - including cheap karaoke, traditional Japanese food and the town s best coffee. How to use the free hot springs without offending anyone.

GETTING THERE Tokyo Narita and Tokyo Haneda are the main gateway airports of choice for most travellers, once you have arrived in Japan there are various travel options to get you to Myoko. Hyperdia.com is a useful resource for transport options when travelling around Japan. TRAIN/TRAIN/TRAIN OR BUS COMBO (approx. 12000 ) This includes a train from Narita to Tokyo, then a bullet train (Shinkansen) to Nagano, and then a local train or bus to Myoko Kogen. This is the fastest route, the total trip takes about 3.5 to 4 hours depending upon connection timing. The other advantage of taking the trains is that it s a great insight into a part of the Japanese culture. DIRECT TRANSFER (Chuo Taxi 15900 ) This involves getting a shuttle bus or shared taxi transfer directly from Narita Airport to Myoko Kogen. The advantage is not having to lug your bags around the train stations. Drive time is roughly 5 hours. THE NAGANO SNOW SHUTTLE (12000 ) Takes about 5 hours which has a few scheduled departure times including an evening time. Buses that arrive in the evening with Nagano Snow Shuttle include a drop-off at your accommodation. For bookings to Myoko Kogen, please contact Liquid Snow Tours.

WHERE TO RIDE Myoko comprises of 4 main ski resorts interconnected and available on the multi resort ski pass. There are endless ways to enjoy skiing here, from long, scenic, tree-lined slopes to challenging bump runs and especially deep powder. Myoko is a Yuki-lovers dream! MYOKO AKAKURA Myoko Akakura is the main ski area, made up of two resorts; Akakura Onsen and Akakura Kanko. It is a huge resort with many lifts and runs so that it never seemed that crowded and lines are usually short or even non-existent... The combined Akakura Ski Resort is considered by many to be the resort of Myoko Kogen because it sits above the main village (Akakura Onsen) where most people stay, it is the largest of the Myoko ski areas, and it has the most well developed ski resort facilities and services. You can purchase a lift ticket for one or the other resort or you can purchase the Akakura Kanko/Onsen combined pass.

AKAKURA KANKO Akakura Kanko also provides gated access to side-country and backcountry terrain. The tunnel run that pops out near the Tsubame Highland Lodge requires a lot of traversing, but it is a bit of fun. Akakura also has a kids park and a couple of small terrain parks. MYOKO SUGINOHARA Myoko Suginohara has super long groomers, some nice tree skiing and fun side country. Often called Sugi for short, Suginohara Ski Resort has the longest run in Japan at 8.5km. The little village at the base of the Suginohara Ski Resort is called Suginosawa Onsen and it s retained its Japanese flavour. English isn t widely spoken, although this is changing with the ever increasing popularity of Myoko Kogen. The Sugi terrain park and skier cross course are decent and are making the resort increasingly popular with freestylers. If you are willing to earn your turns, Suginohara has some enjoyable off-piste skiing and riding in the trees. It s not steep but the variety of tree spacing keeps it fun. Suginohara has some amazing lift-accessed side-country that includes cliff drops, steep trees, and open mellow trees. It s rather avalanche prone so only head in there with the appropriate avalanche safety gear, a buddy or three, and backcountry know-how.

The top of the resort typically has great snow quality during winter thanks to its higher elevation and scores lots of goodness from the Yuki gods with somewhere in the realm of 13 metres of snowfall on average per season. SEKI ONSEN A smaller area, although it makes up for size with interesting topography and massive snowfall. It is famous for steep tree skiing and is an off-piste haven for powder hounds. The resort has a liberal off-piste policy so you won t have a ski patroller chasing you. Seki has a mixture of small open areas, tight trees and open glades and is an ideal spot to visit for a powder day or two from Akakura Onsen. IKENOTAIRA ONSEN Ikenotaira Onsen offers family-friendly slopes and is ideal for beginners to intermediates. Wannabe powder hounds will love Ikenotaria because the slopes are mellow, there s plenty of powder, and there is little competition for the freshies because most riders are there for the terrain parks and pipe. A major forte of Myoko Ikenotaira is the terrain parks they have on offer. They change every season and generally include big jumps, boxes, rails, and a half pipe!

BACK COUNTRY TOURS Back Country Tours Ride where the locals ride with a one-off deep powder experience in the backcountry. Your guide will show you the best of the resorts and untapped side-country terrain. This means less encounters with foreign tourists and more of a cultural Japanese experience. Yuki Dake Lodge in Myoko offers expert backcountry guiding tours, let local guide Nate show you some of Japans best hidden gems! Click here.

HOW TO USE THE ONSEN Each of the onsens have their own qualities, such as different colours and minerals in the water and supposed healing qualities. Each building is different too, from little wooden shacks to multi-levelled concrete buildings. Be aware that it s customary to bathe in the onsen completely naked. It may feel daunting to walk into a public onsen at first but the experience is well worth any initial awkwardness! Onsens have a few other rules and customs that you need to abide by: Bring your own towel, soap, shampoo, razor, clean clothes and anything else you may need. Enter through the right door for your gender - red for women and blue for men. Take off your shoes and clothes and place them in the storage area. Wash yourself with soap and rinse well at the taps along the walls before you enter the bath. Do not bring any soaps, liquids or perfumes into the bath! The baths are very hot so enter slowly and don t spend too much time in them. Consider leaving some coins in the donation box outside as it goes towards the cleaning and maintenance of the baths.
