For the 13th time in program history, and the 26th time in Lobo athletics history, a New Mexico student-athlete won an individual national title. Sophomore Joonas Rasanen won the men s slalom race on March 8 and helped the Lobos post the second-best team score of that day with a score of 169 points -- a performance that was instrumental in keeping UNM in the top six. The 2013 NCAA Championships were hosted by Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vt., and included on event each day, March 6-9. Action began with the giant slalom and the Lobos were paced by senior Chris Acosta who earned his fifth All- American honor with a fourth-place finish. The Alpiners tallied 144 points and were in sixth place after the opening day. Acosta became just the third Lobo men s Alpiner and the sixth Lobo skier in school history to earn national honors all four years of his collegiate career. On the second day of nationals, Mats Rudin Resaland finished runner-up in the men s 10K classic and helped the Lobos move up on spot in the standings to fifth place (280 points). Day three was perhaps the most exciting day for New Mexico as Rasanen captured the men s slalom race. The sophomore was in third place after the men s first run as he posted a time of 48.09. The second run of the men s slalom featured slips from many of the contenders and Rasanen took advantage, posting a solid second run in 50.87 for a total time of 1:38.96. was a first and second team honoree. Resaland was runner-up in the classic race and placed sixth in the mass-start freestyle. In their first trips to NCAAs, sophomore Joonas Rasanen and Mateja Robnik both earned national accolades. As the Slalom National Champ, Rasanen was first team while Robnik placed ninth in the women s slalom to garner second team All-America distinction. Six Lobos Garner All-RMISA Accolades UNM landed six skiers on the 2013 All-RMISA list as announced by the Association on March 4. First Team honorees included Chris Acosta, Joonas Rasanen and Mats Rudin Resaland, while Michael Bansmer, Mateja Robnik and Anni Nord earned second team recognition. Acosta was the only repeat honoree as he was named second team All-RMISA in 2012. Acosta and Robnik Named RMISA Skiers of the Week UNM swept the RMISA s Alpine weekly accolades the final week. Chris Acosta and Mateja Robnik were named the Association s Skiers of the Week for their performances at the RMISA Championships/NCAA West Regionals held Feb. 22-24. It was the first weekly accolade for both student-athletes. Acosta won the giant slalom and was runner-up in the slalom at regionals. He just barely missed a weekend sweep as he was two-tenth s of a second behind Denver s Espen Lyshdahl in the slalom. Robnik finished third in both the giant slalom and the slalom at regionals. A Dozen Lobos at the 2013 NCAA Championships Twelve Lobo skiers will represented the University of New Mexico at the 2013 NCAA Skiing Championships in Middlebury, Vt., March 6-9. Seniors Chris Acosta, Kate Williams, Mary Rachel Hostetter and Linn Håvelsrud Klaesson; junior Christian Otto; and sophomores Michael Bansmer, Joonas Rasanen, Mateja Robnik, Mats Rudin Resaland, Sjur Prestsaeter, Anni Nord and Clara Chauvet made the trip to Middlebury College to compete in this year s NCAA events. Seventy-four men and 74 women made up the field at the NCAA Men s and Women s Skiing Championships. Participants are selected on a regional basis from two designated regions for Alpine skiing (East and West Regions) and three designated regions for Nordic skiing (Central, East and West Regions). Bids were awarded to regions using a formula determined by the skiing committee. A maximum of 12 studentathletes (three per gender per discipline) may participate from an institution. About the 2013 NCAA Championships It was the fifth time in school history that Middlebury College served as the host site for the NCAA Skiing Championships. The Panthers previously hosted the event in 1961, 1972, 1988 and 2001. Alpine events ran at Middlebury College Snow Bowl while Nordic events were held at Rikert Nordic Center. UNM and The Big Dance The Lobos kept their 30-year streak of top-10 team finishes at nationals alive with a sixth-place finish at the 2013 Big Dance. Last season UNM finished eighth at the NCAA National Championships and earned five All-American honors: Chris Acosta earned national honors in men s giant slalom and slalom, finishing 10th and third, respectively; Armin Triendl claimed fifth place in the giant slalom and Stefanie Demetz claimed sixth place in the women s slalom; and on the Nordic side, Sjur Prestseater finished 10th in the men s classic. Joonas Rasanen became the first Lobo skier to win a national title since 2009 when Malin Hemmingsson won the women s slalom for the second time in her career (also won in 2007). Rasanen also became just the second men s Alpiner to win an individual national title joining the likes of Mattais Erlandsson who also won the slalom in 1996. Mats Rudin Resaland came close to snapping a 10-year drought of individual national titles on the Nordic side with his runnerup finish in the classic race. The last Nordic individual to win a national title was Jimmy Vika in the freestyle in 2003. On the women s Nordic side, Kristina Stradnberg won the classic race in 2000. Colorado represented the RMISA well winning the 2013 title. Teams from the West have won 16 of the last 18 national championships. Acosta is GS Champ and SL Runner Up at 2013 RMISA Ships/Regionals For the second year in a row, Chris Acosta earned an RMISA/ NCAA West Regionals title as the Lobo senior won the giant slalom event on Feb. 23. Acosta won the 2012 RMISA/NCAA West Regionals slalom title. He nearly repeated as the slalom champ on Feb. 24, missing the top podium spot by two-tenths of a second and finishing instead as the runner-up. Robnik Podiums Twice at RMISA Ships/Regionals Sophomore Mateja Robnik was third in both the giant slalom and the slalom at the 2013 RMISA Championships/NCAA West Regionals. Third place is a career best for Robnik, who transferred to UNM at the semester break. Her presence has been a huge asset to the Alpine team as she has led the Lobo women and placed 14th or better in all eight RMISA events she s competed in. Lobos Fourth at RMISA Ships/Regionals A tough opening day on the Nordic trails had New Mexico sitting in last place after day one of the 2013 RMISA Championships/ NCAA West Regionals. The Lobos, however, improved one place in the standings each day of competition to finish fourth with 755 points. Colorado won the Championships/Regionals with a score of 905.5. Denver followed with 859 points and Utah finished in third place with 805. Montana State (738.5) and Alaska-Anchorage (620) finished fifth and sixth, respectively. 4 www.golobos.com

Overall, the Lobo Alpine team finished second to Denver in downhill events, recording 441 points to the Pioneers 478. New Mexico men s Alpine team won the slalom event with 121 points while the women finished second by one point, recording 111 to Denver s 112. Fredrik Landstedt Enters his sixth season as the head coach of the Lobo ski team and his 18th season overall as he served as a student assistant coach and assistant coach before becoming the second head coach in program history the summer of 2007. With Landstedt at the helm of the program, the Lobos have finished fourth, third, third, seventh and eighth at NCAA Championships. During his tenure at UNM (assistant coach from 1990-91;98-2007 and head coach from 2007-present) he has coached 41 Nordic Lobos to 67 All-American awards and four individual event Nordic team national championships. Since taking over as the head coach, Landstedt has fostered 25 Alpine All-America performers and four individual event Alpine team national championships. He has mentored two Nordic individual national champions Kristina Strandberg (2000) and Jimmy Vika (2003) and has been a integral part of the coaching staff for five Alpine individual national championships Marte Dolva (2002), Jennifer Delich (2004) and Malin Hemmingsson (2007, 09, 10). Lobos Add Joe Downing as head Alpine Coach UNM announced the hiring of Joe Downing as the head Alpine Coach (replaced Tyler Shepherd) on Aug. 21, 2012. Downing comes to New Mexico with over six years of head coaching experience and plenty of passion for ski racing. The Puyallup, Wash., native was a two-time NCAA All-American and Western Regional Champion in the Giant Slalom for the Mountaineers of Western State College. He graduated with a degree in business administration in 2002 and began coaching back in Washington at his home ski club, Team Alpental Snoqualmie. He spent three years there before moving to Loveland, Colo., to serve as the head alpine coach/fis ability lead coach of the Loveland Racing Club. From 2009-11, Downing was the lead FIS coach at Schweitzer Alpine Racing School in Sandpoint, Idaho. He brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to the Lobo ski program. UNM Wins Alpine Portion of Home Meet; Finishes Fourth Overall The Lobo men s team won both slalom events while the women finished third and fourth on days one and two, respectively, to allow UNM to win the Alpine portion of its home meet. The Lobos finished fourth place overall. Colorado won the meet (864 points) to clinch the RMISA regular-season title. The Buffaloes were completely balanced over Nordic and Alpine and won every regular-season conference event this season. Utah and Denver rounded out the top three spots with 851 and 808 points, respectively. The Lobo men s Alpine team dominated their home hill, placing first, fifth and seventh in the first day of competition and second, third and sixth on the second day. Joonas Rasanen won the slalom on Feb. 9 and then placed second on Feb. 10. Chris Acosta was the second point-placer each day, while Juho- Pekka Penttinen and Mark Miller took turns as the third point earner. Mats Rudin Resaland and Anni Nord led the Lobo Nordic team last weekend in opening events of UNM s home Invitational in Red River, N.M. Resaland placed a career-best second place in the 5K CL and finished seventh in the 10K FS, while Nord tied her career-best fourth-place finish in the 5K CL and took ninth in the 10K FS. In terms of team performance, the Lobos are tied with Alaska-Anchorage for fifth following Nordic events as both the men s and women s teams placed fourth in CL events and sixth in FS events for a total of 350 points on the weekend. Resaland and Rasanen Recognized by RMISA Mats Rudin Resaland and Joonas Rasanen became the first Lobos this season to earn Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association Skier of the Week honors for their performances at the Utah Invitational and the University of New Mexico Invitational, respectively, as announced by the conference on Feb. 11. Resaland, a sophomore newcomer from Kongsberg, Norway, finished sixth in the 10K classical and fifth in the 20K mass-start freestyle races Feb. 8-9 in Soldier Hollow, Utah. He has led the Lobo men and placed in the top 10 in all eight conference events this season. Rasanen won the first slalom race and finished second in the second slalom race at the UNM Invite held at the Red River Ski Area in Red River, N.M., Feb. 9-10. He paced the men s team to first-place finishes each day and was instrumental in New Mexico s Alpine team winning its portion of the Invite. Rasanen Wins His Way into Program History Rasanen s win in the first day slalom at UNM s Invite secured him a spot in the UNM Skiing History and Records book. The victory was his third of the season, ranking him tied for fourth (Stefan Lanzier 1997, Jonas Ryttberg 1992) in program history for most wins in a single season for by a Lobo men s Alpine skier. Three victories in the slalom is also a tie for most individual wins in the event in a single season. Petter Brenna also had three slalom victories in 2010. Lobos in the RMISA MVP Standings RMISA MVP awards are based on placings and points earned throughout the regular season. No Lobos earned MVP distinction this season, but two came very close: Courtney Altringer for women s Alpine and Joonas Rasanen for men s Alpine. Courtney Altringer led the women s standings for almost half of the RMISA regular season as she finished in the top 10 in the first six events. The Lobo freshman finished second to Colorado s Thea Grosvold. Rasanen, too, finished second in the men s alpine MVP race. The UNM sophomore recorded three slalom victories and placed in the top 11 or better in all eight regular-season events. Denver s Espen Lysdahl earned MVP distinction. 5 www.facebook.com/unmski

On the Nordic side, Mats Rudin Resaland was the highestranked Lobo, finishing fifth. Linn Håvelsrud Klaesson was eighth to lead UNM on the women s side. A Dozen with Dancing Experience New Mexico has 12 skiers who have competed at NCAA Championships and the Lobos aspire to return to the Big Dance and improve on last year s eighth-place finish. Those with nationals experience include: Chris Acosta (2010-12), Michael Bansmer (2012), Anne Cecilie Brusletto (2010-11), Mary Rachel Hostetter (2010-12), Armin Triendl (2012), Kate Williams (2010-12), Clara Chauvet (2012), Linn Håvelsrud Klaesson (2010, 12), Pierre Niess (2010), Anni Nord (2012), Christian Otto (2011-12), and Sjur Prestsaeter (2012). Half of the Dancers are All-Americans Six returning Lobos have All-America honors under their belt - Chris Acosta (2010, 11, 12); Anne Cecilie Brusletto (2010, 11); Sjur Prestsaeter (2012), Armin Triendl (2012), Pierre Niess (2010) and Kate Williams (2010). Lobos Fourth at Utah Invite The Lobos finished fourth at the Utah Invitational which held its Alpine portion in Loveland, Colo., Feb. 6-7, and the Nordic races in Solider Hollow, Utah, Feb. 8-9. Colorado won the Invite with 904 points. Utah placed second (845) and Denver was third (777). In Alpine action, newcomer Mateja Robnik led all Lobos in the giant slalom as she placed 15th on the opening day of the Utes Invite. Freshman Courtney Altringer and seniors Mary Rachel Hostetter and Kate Williams finished 17th, 18th and 19th, respectively. The men were led by senior Chris Acosta who placed 18th. Sophomores Michael Bansmer and Mark Miller were the other two point placers for the Lobo men, finishing 21st and 28th, respectively. The Lobos had a strong performance in the slalom and junior Juho-Pekka Penttinen finished a season-best second-place to lead the Lobos in the event. Acosta and Joonas Rasanen were the other two point scorers for the Lobo men. Acosta, a senior, nabbed his fourth top-10 finish of the season as he placed sixth, while Rasanen claimed ninth place and tallied his fourth top-10 finish. Robnik led the Lobo women for the second-consecutive day as she placed fifth. Courtney Altringer and Mary Rachel Hostetter were next, finishing eighth and ninth, respectively. In Nordic competition, Mats Rudin Resaland led the Lobos as he placed sixth in the 10K classical. Christian Otto was 17th and Sjur Prestsaeter was 26th to round out scoring for the men. Linn Håvelsrud Klaesson paced the women, finishing 14th in the 5K classical. Anni Nord and Clara Chauvet finished 16th and 21st, respectively in the classical. In the 15/20K mass-start freestyle, Resaland again led the men with a fifth-place finish while Chauvet led the women, crossing the line seventh. Otto and Eivind Odden Solberg were the other two points scorers behind Resaland, finishing18th and 29th. The other two point placers for the women were Nord and Klaesson, who placed 15th and 19th. History of Lobo Home Meets UNM did not hold a home meet last season, but won their home meet in 2011, compiling 881 points. Since 1983, UNM has won five of its 22 home meets (UNM held an Alpine-only meet in1989, but the Lobos finished 4th). Juho-Pekka Penttinen and Anne Cecilie Brusletto, both Alpiners, have won individual events at UNM s last home meet. Penttinen won the men s Slalom while Brusletto took two Slalom victories on the women s side. She also won the women s Slalom at the Lobos home meet in 2010. University of Denver Invite The Lobos (754 points) were edged out of third place by Utah in the final day of competition at the DU Invite and finished fourth overall. The Utes (796 points) dominated the men s 15K mass start classical, with guys finishing second, fifth and sixth to notch 123 points. Colorado (852 points) won its second-consecutive RMISA meet, with its Nordic teams again serving as the X factors. The Buffaloes edged out Denver (833 points) in the final day of competition as CU got individual victories from Joanne Reid and Rune Malo Oedegaard. Mats Rudin Resaland led the Lobo men in both days of Nordic competition, finishing fifth in the men s 10K freestyle and a career-best third place in the men s 15k mass start classical. Anni Nord led the Lobo women in the women s 5K freestyle, placing a career-high fourth place. Linn Håvelsrud Klaesson paced UNM in the women s 10K mass start classical. The Alpine team took to the slopes for the DU Invite Jan. 12-13 and had the Lobos in third place following their events. After the giant slalom on Jan. 12, the Lobos were in fifth place, but a win in the men s slalom by Joonas Rasanen on Jan. 13, coupled with other solid slalom performances moved the Lobos to third place. CU/Spencer Nelson Memorial Invite The Lobos finished third at the CU/Spencer Nelson Memorial Invite held Jan. 8-9 (Alpine) and 12-13 (Nordic). The Alpiners claimed second place after the first day of competition (giant slalom) and slipped to third place after the slalom. The Nordic team battled frigid temperatures on Saturday and sub-zero temperatures on Sunday but still managed to maintain the Lobos third place spot. Host Colorado used strong performances by its Nordic women s team to come from behind and win the event with 878 points. Denver finished second with 808.5 points. Mateja Robnik Added to UNM Women s Alpine Roster New Mexico got some excellent news at the end of the fall semester: Mateja Robnik, a transfer from the University of Ljublijana in Slovenia, will join the Lobos in January 2013. Robnik has skied on the World Cup tour for many years, finishing 6 www.golobos.com

in the top 30 sixteen times. Her best place was 11th in a World Cup giant slalom race. The Lobo newcomer has sophomore eligibility and will provide the women s alpine team with more depth. Robnik will arrive on Jan. 13. She will miss the CU/ Spencer Nelson Memorial Invite and the University of Denver Invite, but then will be a regular competitor for UNM. Acosta Receives UNM Honor Senior Chris Acosta earned the University of New Mexico s L.F. Tow Diehm Inspirational Award for 2011-12. Started in 1997-98, this is the 15th year the award has been presented to a UNM male student-athlete who exemplifies leadership, character, determination and commitment to their team. A native of Ashland, Wis., Acosta overcame personal tragedy to become a three-time All-American downhill skier for the Lobos. In the summer of 2010, Acosta and his closest friend, Spencer Nelson, a member of the University of Colorado Alpine ski team, were hiking near Aspen, Colo. Nelson was struck by a falling rock and fell to his death as Acosta and other friends looked on. A former walk-on, Acosta is now in his senior season at UNM and captain of the men s Alpine team. He has earned All-America honors each of the past three seasons in the giant slalom and slalom, including a third-place finish at the 2012 NCAA Championships. It s the second-consecutive year the L.F. Tow Diehm Inspirational Award has gone to a men s skier as last years winner was Tor-Hakon Hellebostad. Polina Ermshina, a women s skier from 2007-10, won the Leslie Self Inspirational award (given to one UNM female student-athlete) in 2009-10. and Sjur Prestsaeter were the other two to earn national honors as Demetz finished sixth in the women s slalom and Prestsaeter claimed 10th in the men s classical. In addition to his All-America awards, Triendl was named the 2012 RMISA Male Skier of the Year and Alpine MVP and earned CoSIDA/Capital One All- Region honors before being named to the CoSIDA/Capital One All-America third team for his work in the classroom. Triendl was also named to the RMISA All-Conference first team along with Nordic women s skier, Linn Klaesson. Acosta and Demetz earned second team All-RMISA honors. Eleven Lobos Named All-Academic UNM had 11 ski team members make the United States Collegiate Ski Coaches Association s All-Academic Team: Pierre Niess (Exercise Science); Anniken Bratlie (Architecture); Juho-Pekka Penttinen (Business Administration); Sean Horner (Undeclared); Mark Miller (Psychology); Christian Otto (Business Administration); Sjur Prestsaeter (Undeclared); Armin Triendl (Business Administration); Clara Chauvet (Undeclared); Stefanie Demetz (University Studies); and Mary Rachel Hostetter (Psychology). About the 2012-13 Lobos If the Lobos have one thing on their side this season, it s experience. Nineteen letterwinners from last year s squad return for the 2012-13 campaign. The Lobos graduated one senior last year in Stefanie Demetz. Only 18 will compete, however, as Anniken Bratlie will redshirt this season. New Mexico is anchored by 10 seniors and three juniors. The roster also includes nine sophomores and UNM welcomes two newcomers in Mats Rudin Resaland (Nordic, So., Kongsberg, Norway) and Courtney Altringer (Alpine, Fr., Spokane, Wash.). Skiers Boast Best GPA of all UNM Teams in 2011-12 The Lobo ski team topped all other teams last year with a team GPA of 3.668. The men s team had a 3.684 GPA while the women posted a 3.644 average. Review of 2011-12 Season The Lobos finished eighth at the 2011-12 NCAA Championships hosted by Montana State in Bozeman, Mont. It was the lowest the Lobos had placed at nationals since 1997. UNM had 11 student-athletes qualify for NCAA competition, an okay amount considering the youth (eight freshman and just one senior) and the number of injuries. Although the eighth-place finish wasn t what the Lobos had hoped, there were still some bright spots of the season. New Mexico brought home five All-America honors. Chris Acosta earned both first and second team honors for his third-place finish in the slalom and 10th-place finish in the giant slalom. Armin Triendl was the other Lobo to take first team honors as he finished fifth in the giant slalom. Stefanie Demetz 7 www.facebook.com/unmski
