SASBA RED HATTERS SAN ANTONIO SUMMARY I think all Texans have a soft spot in their hearts for the city Deep in the Heart of Texas - San Antonio. Texas roots are deep there - Travis, Crockett, Bowie, the Alamo - all make us proud to be Texans. Well the Texas SASBA Red Hatters (we missed our gals from Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Mississippi) invaded the city last Saturday and found, believe it or not, a little bit of England tucked away in the Lone Star State. Bawdsey Manor Tea Room is as English as the two ladies who run it. Eleven SASBA Red Hatters and one guest enjoyed tea in the English tradition although I must admit, I think only our hostess, Alene Hensley, actually had the traditional hot tea. The rest of us had to have our southern iced tea. But the food was traditional. We dined on cucumber with cream cheese and egg salad sandwiches and a wonderful homemade cream of chicken soup. The scones (made by a recipe from the 1800s) filled will cream and preserve were a wonderful ending to our meal. Thank you, Alene, for such an excellent choice. We caravanned from the bowling center, and thanks to precise directions and a map (provided by Carl) no one got lost although Billie Jean did overshoot the entrance. CeCe wasn t late, but someone did have to go back into the bowling center and tell her we were leaving. That made me feel a little bit better, because, I knew that CeCe had been the first to RSVP (isn t that unbelievable) and I was concerned that she had been abducted by aliens and had undergone a personality change. We love you CeCe just the way you are! So, of course, CeCe won the Ladybug Award; Debbie Ellison won the door prize - two beautiful Red Hat coffee mugs (thank you Ellen); and Alene was the recipient of a beautiful dish garden provided by our very own Barbara Redlinger (thank you Barbara for bringing it all the way from Spring). Our hostess gifted each of us with a shopping tote. In honor of Veterans Day, they all had a flag pin attached (all those tiny beads hand placed by Alene), decorative buttons, and were embellished with the SASBA Red Hat Logo. Alene credited Peggy with the artwork for the logo, but she did the rest. They sure came in handy for the after tea shopping spree. Charleen and Debbie scored Secret Sister gifts and Renae and Ellen weren t there to get theirs. We will see that you get them girls. Since we were trying to be dignified, our ladies were decked out in their very best Red Hat attire (with a few exceptions). Peggy Brooks had money taped to the slit in her skirt - she just can t keep her legs covered; Jan Colaluca forgot her hat (and her pants); and Pinkie Debbie Ellison was carrying an unauthorized accessory for which she was severely chastised. She did receive a one-time special dispensation from your very own Queenie to carry the red and purple shopping tote. Charleen Schneider s bear was there and wearing a beautiful bracelet (Secret Sister please note). Alene Hensley was looking very dignified in her new, grownup hat even though Gayle Currie did call her a floozy - now what was that all about. We were so glad to have Gayle back looking elegant as always. Someone has to keep Peggy (and now Alene) in line. Donna Smith was wearing the most gorgeous purple suit complete with a special pin courtesy of the Old Man of the Sea. Our guest, Myrtice Farris, was dressed in red and purple. It was nice to see Billie Jean back after her vacation in Port Aransas. Helen Freehauf and Kathy King held down the fort back at the bowling center - missed you girls. SASBA Red Hatters I will be filing our application for the Step Contest, we fine-tuned Plan B, and Jan filled us in on our upcoming Christmas event. I will be sending out an email with information on all of the above. We missed all of you who couldn t be there, and boy, did yall miss a good time!
