UTAH PRECISION MARKSMANSHIP SOCIETY January 2010........ 5 6 7 8 9 10. Bullseye! Newsletter of the Utah Precision Marksmanship Society Published as often as we can! ARNIE VITARBO TO GIVE CLINIC 22-23 JANUARY As has become a local custom, Arnie Vitarbo will be giving a clinic on 22 and 23 January at the U. The typical format is to have a classroom session Friday evening from 6:00 8:00 PM followed on Saturday with brief classroom introductions and lengthy range sessions with plenty of one-on-one guidance from the expert. Friday: Session to be based on an article he wrote on shooting which he entitled "Pistol Shooting 101-401" in which he will stress the long forgotten simple focus on the basics to improve and maintain winning scores. Saturday times: Air pistol 0800 1000 (will include time on the Rika and SCATT trainers); Standard Pistol: 1000 1130; Free Pistol: 1130 1300; lunch 1300 1400; WSP/CF 1400 1500; Rapid Fire 1500 1600. Contact Matt to sign up for times. No limit on Friday participants. To assure a quality shooting experience we will limit the Saturday sessions to 10 participants. First 10 to sign up. Sign up with Matt at Delong@physics.utah.edu or call 801-581-7462. We asked Arnie for some biographical information for background. He sent the following. All is included because we were not willing to take responsibility for leaving out anything important and it makes such fascinating reading and allows us to realize what a national treasure we have in our midst. Began precision shooting while in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1959, while in Hawaii and was assigned to the Marksmanship Program there (The USMC had two at that time, MTU in San Diego, later moved to Quantico) and my unit in Hawaii. At that time, we had the best shooters in the Marine Corps, and the Marine Corps chose us to organize and develop the first Sniper School which I was part of. While a member of that Team, I was assigned to the Pistol Team and was able to break 2600 (2627) in 1961. I was reassigned to the MTU at Quantico in 1962, and while there broke 2650 (2653). The U.S. Air Force offered me a deal "I could not refuse" so I left the USMC and was assigned to the Air Force marksmanship School at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. During that time (1963-1969), I shot as high as 2666 and made the World Championship Team in 1966 (Wiesbaden, Germany Free Pistol 5th place, Pan American Team, Winnipeg, Canada Free Pistol Gold Medal Team member and set a Free Pistol record for that time.

Page 2 1968 Olympic Team Free Pistol 4th place. I set records in Free Pistol 571 which lasted 16 years National Free Pistol Champion, 1973 I won the.22 and Center Fire Aggregates at Camp Perry and was as high as 3rd at Camp Perry. Standard Pistol record 586 which lasted 12 years. Air Pistol record 586 in 1985 I won the Inter Service Free Pistol, Rapid Fire, Center Fire and Standard Pistol Championships several times. I won the Service Pistol Match at Camp Perry in 1969 with a score of 292. (Unfortunately, this was the first year in which the National Trophy match Trophy was not awarded because Congress eliminated the old DCM (now the CMP). This match was conducted solely by the NRA. I have Distinguished Badges in High Power Rifle, Pistol and International shooting. [Arnie didn t mention that to get a Distinguished pin in International shooting you must medal in International Competition. It s not like pistol!] Firing member of the current.22 Team record of 1192 shot in 1964 Firing member of the winning Team and record setting Service Pistol Championships at Camp Perry in 1966. Air Force Pistol Team Coach 1989-1991 Assistant National Pistol Coach 1991-1992 National Pistol Coach 1992-1994 NRA Certified Referee. I have been the Referee at six National Championships and many Collegiate Sectionals. Member of the NRA Coach Development Staff Advanced Pistol Coach USA/NRA CMP Master Rifle Instructor CMP Utah State Junior Director NRA Instructor Rifle and Pistol Coach, University of Utah Pistol Team (part time) Boy Scout merit Badge Counselor. UPMS ELECTS NEW BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND OFFICERS UPMS has a new slate of Board members. Because we had no annual meeting last year, two sets of Board members were elected. Elected to the seats that expired in 2008 were Elwood Powell and Eugene Mishchenko; re-elected to their seats expiring in 2009 were Rachel Peterson and Arnie Vitarbo. Officers elected for the next year were Matt DeLong, President; Elwood Powell, Vice President and President-elect, Allen Johnson, Treasurer and Lori Hanson, Recording Secretary. Steve Corbin and Lori Hanson will serve as Membership Secretaries, Brent McNee will be the League Secretary, Brian Oberg will be the Match Director and Tony Thompson will be the Range Coordinator. (Brian and Tony are already off to a running start: Brian organized the PTO and Utah State Junior Olympics, the largest match we have ever run. Tony has installed new fluorescents lights in the shooting booths at the U.) Still vacant are the positions of Match Coordinator, who is responsible for submitting all the paperwork to the NRA and USAS to get matches approved) and Social Director, who organizes a whole lot more social events. The first job takes about one day per year. The second would establish someone s credentials as a party animal. BIG CHANGES AT THE PMAA HENDRIKSEN RANGE New leadership on the PMAA (Salt Lake City Police Mutual Aid Association, the organization responsible for managing the Hendriksen Range in Parley s Canyon) has decided to start managing the range like a business rather than well, let s not go there. Both Dave Walker and the PMAA Board representative

Page 3 who is liaison to the range are excited about adding many new events and increasing usage. There have been two brainstorming meetings with long-time users so far. Probably the biggest change will be the addition of a 5- stand sporting clays facility just behind the current firing line on the 25-yard range. It is claimed that the new installation will not impact the traditional uses of the 25-yard range except that both styles of shooting will not be able to occur at the same time. There will also be an increase in fees. We appear to have beaten back an attempt to double the rental rates that we pay to host matches at the Hendriksen Range in summer, but expect a requirement for increased volunteer labor. Annual passes will increase to $125 with $25 refundable in exchange for four hours work. Day fees will be $7.00 for non-members and $2.00 for members. One thing seems clear. With all the changes and expansion going on at Hendriksen and all the enthusiasm of the other participants, we are faced with the choice of either growing our program or getting squeezed out. Check out their new website (still under construction): www.pmaagunrange.com. 2010 UTAH STATE JUNIOR OLYMPIC RESULTS 8 10 January 2010 U of U Ranges The January USA Shooting-sanctioned PTO was not only the largest match UPMS has ever sponsored, it also had the largest number of juniors participating in the State Junior Olympics. Braeden Staheli, a 12-year-old from Spanish Fork who trains with the Pacific States Rifle Club, won the Gold Medal in both the 3P and Air Rifle events. The high J1 shooter (17-20 years old) is Jordan Soottoo who trains with the West High School NJROTC unit. Our J2 Air Rifle champion is Robert Estrada Jr. who is with the AFJROTC unit at Clearfield High School. The Women s Air Pistol champion is Andelyn Seeley, a freshman at the University of Utah majoring in Business who only started shooting with the U Collegiate Pistol Team in November and who is still struggling with the Daisey air pistol issued to new recruits on that team. Seeley won the tie-breaker with Robyn Wagner, a 15-year-old from Enoch UT. Because of the large number of J2 and J3 shooters in this year s competition, we expect many of them to return next year to win invitations to the National Junior Olympics. It has been several years since Utah has been represented there. Let s get in more training so we can have someone represent the state! 60-shot Air Rifle Jordan Soottoo AA J1 449 Angilica Rodriguez E J1 444 Isaih Norcross AA J1 421 Robert Estrada AA J2 476 Roberto Mota AA J2 436 Ian Gillette E J2 403 Jason Hamby E J2 377 Eric Koenig AA J2 307 C.
