No official Club sails were held in November, but if you engaged in any nonofficial sails and want to share your cruising excursion with the Club, let the Vice Commodore know so we can put your presentation on the winter/spring meeting agenda! Thanks to all who attended the meeting on Thursday, November 10, our Annual Membership Meeting! Founding member and past Commodore, Gari Westcott, helped us reminisce about the 2016 sailing season and presented an award to Bob Brand in honor of a memorable sail he captained. See the photo below of that presentation! Restatement of Bylaws and Financial Guidelines The Board met to review, clarify, coordinate and update the Club s Bylaws and Financial Guidelines documents prior to the Annual meeting. I announced the changes, which were mostly grammatical, layout, and clarifications of board position duties, sailing requirements, and club policies. You can view the updated documents on the Salty Dog Sailing Club website at: http://www.saltydog.org. Go to the Membership page, then scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the links you will find there. Election - New Board for 2017 The election of the Board of Directors is very important. Nominations were taken from the members present, including self-nominations. Congratulations to the newly elected 2017 Board of Directors, who will serve as officers for next year s club events: Commodore Becky Mock Vice Commodore Lucy Bambrey Secretary Diana Bliss Financial Officer/Treasurer Brooke Moreland Membership Director Lori Conway On-the-Water Director Blair Ohler Dryland Director Claudia Hoffman Newsletter Editor Barbara Morris Webmaster Larry Moreland

Volume 35, Issue 11 Page 2 For continuity on the Board from year to year, it is always a plus to have about half of the Board members continuing into the next year. Of the nine (9) director positions, seven (7) were retained from 2016, albeit some in new positions. Claudia Hoffman and Barb Morris stepped up to the plate and are new on the Board for 2017. Thanks to each of you! Volunteers make this Club successful. Thanks to everyone who has participated in club events and especially to each of you taking a leadership role in your Club. This includes all the Boat Owners and Event Coordinators. You make our Club work, and we wouldn t have a sailing club without YOU! See you all at the Holiday Party on Saturday, December 3! Carol Kolesnikoff, Commodore ~ Soon to be Rear-Commodore ~ Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds. Explore. Dream. Volume 35, Issue 11 Page 4 From Our Membership Director It s Membership Renewal Time! Ahoy, sailors, it s that time of year once again. We are approaching the end of 2016 and we are looking forward to a great year again in 2017. To make it even more enjoyable, current members can renew for the fantastic sum of $35.00 per person / $70 per couple. New members will also get a $5.00 reduction from $45.00 to $40.00. However, to get these discounts, I MUST have your money (check or cash) and a completed membership form (both sides) before January 1, 2017. I have attached a renewal form and a waiver form for you to print, complete and bring to the next meeting or to mail to me, along with your payment. We do not take credit cards. Here s to another great season. FYI - Membership information and forms are also available on our website: http://www.saltydog.org/membership.html. Thanks. Volume 35, Issue 11 Page 5 Stay Tuned for the 2017 Salty Dog Sailing Club Schedule! This Month s Nautical Term Sails are controlled with ropes called sheets and the most any sail has is two a lee side sheet and a weather sheet. The sailor s contention is that if a man who had been drinking was given as many as three sheets he could still not steady or control himself on a regular course. An alternative idea is that of a ship caught with three (jib) sheets in the wind as she goes from one tack to the other. The sails would flap and the ship would wallow and stagger in the locomotion of a drunk. -from Salty Dog Talk, The Nautical Origins of Everyday Expressions, Bill Beavis and Richard G. McCloskey, 1983

Boat owner and nonowners are welcome! The Club plans about a dozen sails each season, including day and weekend sails at nearby lakes. Special three day holiday trips often include Lake Granby or Pueblo Reservoir in Colorado, Lake McConaughy in Nebraska, or Glendo Reservoir in Wyoming. Salty Dog members have also organized charter sails in the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Greece, and France. Aside from sailing, we have a variety of fun dryland activities throughout the year. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month, except for March, November, and December when there are banquets and special parties. Meetings during the off season are held at Garrison Street Grill, 608 Garrison St. Lakewood, CO, 80215. Beginning in June regular club meetings resume at the Chatfield Marina.
