MANUFACTURED FOR THE VIKING COR PO RA TION 210 North Industrial Park Road Hastings, MI 49058 U.S.A. Telephone: (616) 945-9501 (877) 384-5464 Fax: (616) 945-9599 e-mail: techsvcs @vikingcorp.com 3. PRO DUCT DE SCRIP TION The Viking concentrate controllers accurately proportion foam con cen - trate into a water stream over a wide range of wa ter flow rates. The con - trollers proportion foam at con cen - trations from 1% to 3 %. 4. TECHNICAL DATA The Viking concentrate controllers are tested as part of a fire ex tin guish - ing system and are UL Listed and FM Approved for use with designated foam concentrates, bladder tanks, piping configurations and discharge devices. 5. OP ER A TION The Vi king concentrate controller is a modified venturi device. As water flows through the venturi, it creates an area of lower pressure referred to as the metering pressure drop. As the water flow increases through the venturi, the metering pressure drop increases, allowing more foam con - centrate to enter through the orifice. A decrease in the wa ter flow reduces the metering pressure drop, thereby reducing the foam concentrate flow. Because the foam concentrate flow varies in direct proportion to the wa - ter flow, the concentrate controller can accurately proportion foam over a wide range of wa ter flow rates. The flow rate at which the metering pressure drop is just high enough to overcome the pressure losses through the piping and the bladder tank is called the low flow rating. The flow rate through the controller must Form No. F_041497 DESIGN DATA be at or above it s low flow rating in order to properly proportion foam. A good rule to follow to ensure the piping is designed properly follows: The combined total equivalent length (pipe length plus equivalent lengths for fittings and valves) of the water supply inlet piping and the foam concentrate discharge piping should not exceed 50 equivalent feet (15,2 m). The diameter of this piping must be the same size as the foam liquid inlet to the concentrate con trol - ler. If the total equivalent length must exceed 50 feet (15,2 m), then re fer to the Proportioning Device Design data located in the Design section of this data book for the method of calculating these pipe sizes. 6. AP PLI CA TION The Vi king concentrate controllers are part of a foam system. In addition to the controller, the main com po - nents of the foam sys tem are foam concentrate, a foam stor age tank, a water supply, piping, and discharge devices. The discharge devices most commonly used are sprin klers, nozzles, and foam chambers. The system must be designed so that the concentrate controller can ac cu - rately proportion foam over the range of flow rates expected during the sys tem operation. 7. AVAILABILITY AND SERVICE The Vi king concentrate controllers are available through a network of domestic, Canadian and in ter na - tional dis trib u tors. See the Yellow Pages of the telephone directory for a local distributor (listed under Sprin- kler-automatic-fire ), or contact The Viking Corporation. Vi king tech ni cal data may be found on The Vi king Cor po ra tion s Web site at http :// www.vikingcorp.com. The Web site may in clude a more recent edi tion of this tech ni cal data page. 8. GUAR AN TEES For details of warranty, re fer to Vi - king s current list price schedule or contact Viking directly. CONTROLLERS 2,,, and (50, 80, 100, 150, and 200 mm) 9. IN STAL LA TION DO NOT ALTER THE PIPING WITH - OUT CONSULTING A SYSTEM DESIGN REPRESENTATIVE. BE - FORE INSTALLING A CON CEN - TRATE CONTROLLER, CHECK THE SYSTEM DESIGN DRAWING TO EN - SURE THE CONTROLLER LO CA - TION DOES NOT CREATE EX CES - SIVE HEAD PRESSURE OR FRIC - TIONAL LOSSES. The controller must be installed with the ar row pointing in the direction of the wa ter flow. Straight piping equal to four (4) to six (6) pipe diameters should be installed both before and after the concentrate controller to en - sure proportioning accuracy. The ideal location for the controller is level or below the top discharge and within 3 feet (1 m) of the tank. The controller can be placed further from the tank, if the pressure drop through the blad der tank does not exceed the metering pressure drop. The pres - sure drop within the piping can be minimized by: 1. Minimizing the number of tees and elbows. 2. Minimizing the distance from the bladder tank to the controller, using full port valves. 3. Increasing the pipe diameter. Viking strongly advises the in stal la - tion of a concentrate control valve, and swing check valve between the bladder tank and concentrate con - troller. This will prevent migration of water into the bladder tank. Viking does not furnish piping with the concentrate controllers. It is the responsibility of the system design engineer to determine the ap pro pri - ate piping. 10. INSPECTIONS AND TESTS Refer to the applicable Viking foam system technical data pages for in - structions on inspections and test ing of the complete foam system. 11. MAIN TE NANCE Refer to the applicable Viking foam system technical data pages for in - structions on maintenance of the complete system. Replaces page 860 a-f, dated March 25, 1999.
