Tip-off for the contest, which will be televised live by FOX Sports Southwest, is set for 7 p.m. TCU brings a 5-2 overall record into Thursday s matchup after splitting a pair of games at the South Padre Island Invitational during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend against Northwestern (L, 31-55) and UAB (W, 76-73). The Frogs will look to remain strong at home, as the squad is 4-1 this season at the DMC and 18-4 dating back to the start of the 2011-12 campaign. The meeting between the Frogs and Thunderbirds will be the first in the all-time series. TCU head coach Trent Johnson holds close ties to the Southern Utah staff, as first-year Thunderbird coach Nick Robinson was recruited by Johnson and played for him at Stanford (2004-05) before serving on Johnson s administrative and coaching staffs with both the Cardinal (2006-08) and LSU (2009-12). SUU assistant coach Todd Okeson also played for Johnson for two years at Nevada and was the starting point guard on the Wolf Pack s 2004 NCAA Sweet 16 squad. Thursday s contest will be televised live by FOX Sports Southwest (DirecTV 676; Dish 437) with the veteran Frog radio tandem of Brian Estridge (play-by-play) and John Denton (analyst) calling the action on TV. DANIEL-MEYER COLISEUM The TCU men s basketball team plays its home games at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum on the TCU campus. The facility is located on the southwest side of campus on Stadium Drive, next to Amon G. Carter Stadium. The physical address is 2900 South Stadium Drive. Parking spaces for working media are limited in the DMC lot. Ample media parking is available in Lot 3, which is located north of Amon G. Carter Stadium. TCU ON TELEVISION All but two of TCU s regular-season games will be televised this season, including each of the squad s 18 home games. The squad opened the year with four losses, at Gonzaga (103-65), vs. Wisconsin Green Bay (66-54), vs. Cal State Fullerton (112-69) and at Nevada (79-61). First-year head coach Nick Robinson, a former standout player at Stanford who was recruited by Trent Johnson when he was a Cardinal assistant, leads the Thunderbirds. Following his playing career, Robinson served on Johnson s coaching staffs at both Stanford and LSU. He is one of five current NCAA Diviaion I head coaches who were one-time assistants under Johnson. Senior forward Jackson Stevenett leads all Thunderbirds this season in both scoring average (16.3 ppg) and rebounding (5.8 rpg). He is shooting 48.8% from the field overall and 90.5% at the charity stripe. Fellow senior guard Damon Heuir (11.4 ppg) also averages double figures in points and is the team s top assist man (2.6 apg). As a team, SUU averages 63.4 ppg but has been outscored by an average margin of 20.2 ppg. The squad has been winning the rebounding battles (+0.4 rpg) but has also turned the ball over at a high rate of 21.8 tpg. LAST TIME OUT: TCU 76, UAB 73 Kyan Anderson scored a career-high 35 points Saturday to help TCU shake out of its offensive struggles, as the Horned Frogs downed UAB, 76-73, in the squad s final game of the South Padre Island Invitational. One day after a dismal offensive showing in a 55-31 loss to Northwestern, TCU responded with its best offensive game of the year. The squad scored a season high in points and shot 55.8% from the field. It also went a season-best 17-of-21 at the free-throw line. The Frogs eclipsed their scoring total from Friday s loss in the first half. The Frogs needed the points, as UAB gave TCU all it could handle with its up-tempo attack. The two teams traded the advantage seven times, with no team leading by more than eight points. The Frogs built a seven-point edge late in the contest before holding on for the victory. UAB s Jordan Swing sank a 3-pointer to cut the lead to just one point with 2.8 seconds left, but Anderson answered by sinking a pair of free throws that pushed the TCU advantage back up to three. Blazer guard Jekore Taylor had a shot at another 3 to tie the game at the buzzer, but it bounced off the front of the rim as time expired. Anderson led the way for TCU with his career-best effort that featured a 13-of-20 shooting night and an 8-of-10 showing at the free-throw line. He totaled 18 points in the first half alone on the way to scoring the most points by a Big 12 player this season and by a TCU player since former Frog Kevin Langford dropped 36 on Wyoming on Jan. 21, 2009. Garlon Green added 14 points while shooting 6-for-7 from the field. TCU-UAB POSTGAME NOTES 4Anderson s 35 points shattered his previous high of 22 points set during last season s road loss at San Diego State. 4Anderson was named to the South Padre Island Invitational All-Tournament Team, the first such honor in his career. 4TCU set season bests in points (76) and free-throw shooting (81.0%). The squad broke a three-game streak of scoring fewer than 50 points, the longest such stretch since 1951. 4TCU outshot the opponent for the sixth time in seven games. DEFENSE IS KEY IN 2012-13 TCU is expected to lean heavily on its defensive play this season following the loss of nearly 60 percent of last year s scoring totals to either graduation or injury. The squad has stepped up this season after ranking as one of the nation s worst defensive teams in 2011-12. 4TCU is No. 1 in the Big 12 and No. 9 in the NCAA in opponent scoring average (52.7 ppg). 4The comparison between defensive figures from last year to this year is staggering: Category 2012-13 (rank) 2011-12 (rank) Scoring Defense 52.7 (No. 9) 72.1 (No. 286) FG Pct. Prior to this season, TCU s last four efforts giving up fewer than 50 stretched back 122 games to the 2008 campaign. 4TCU allowed 39 points to Prairie View A&M on Nov. 18, the fewest for an opponent since Colgate had 37 on Dec. 30, 2008. KEEPING IT CLOSE TCU has made a habit of playing in close games this season, with five of seven contests being decided by seven points or fewer. The Frogs have overcome second-half deficits in four of their five victories. 4TCU erased a 14-point deficit in its Nov. 18 win over Prairie View A&M, the fifth time since the start of last season the squad won after trailing by double digits. 4TCU led the nation last season with 13 victories coming by six points or fewer. The figure was three more than in any previous season in program history. ANDERSON LEADS OFFENSIVE ATTACK Kyan Anderson has continued to progress in his second year on the Frogs roster after posting one of the best campaigns for a TCU freshman in recent memory last season. 4Anderson helped TCU escape from a recent offensive slump vs. UAB, scoring a career-high 35 points on 13-of-20 shooting during a 76-73 victory. The effort earned him a spot on the South Padre Island Invitational All-Tournament Team. 4The performance marked the most points by a TCU player since Kevin Langford totaled 36 vs. Wyoming on Jan. 21, 2008. 4The 35-point outing ranks as the top effort in the Big 12 this season and is tied for No. 7 among all players nationally. 4Anderson is among the Big 12 leaders in minutes played (No. 7), assist/turnover ratio (No. 8), assists (No. 9), steals (No. 9), scoring (T-No. 14) and 3-pointers (No. 15). 4Anderson has turned into a dangerous long-range weapon for TCU since the middle of his freshman season. He is shooting 40.7% (37-of-91) from beyond the arc over the last 25 games dating back to last year. 4Anderson was named Mountain West Freshman of the Year in 2012 after leading all MW freshmen in scoring average (9.8 ppg), assists (3.07 apg), assist/turnover ratio (1.48) and minutes (34.64 mpg) during league action. 4Anderson s honor made him the first Frog freshman of the year since Damion Walker earned the Southwest Conference award in 1996. 4Anderson s 22 starts were the most for a TCU freshman since Femi Ibikunle totaled 28 in 2003-04, while his 90 assists were the most since Corey Santee s 180 in 2001-02. ABRON HAS ARRIVED Following a slow start to his TCU career, Devonta Abron has kicked his game into high gear since the Nov. 18 home win over Prairie View A&M. 4Abron is averaging 10.5 ppg and 8.5 rpg with a 73.9% shooting rate over the last four outings after opening the season with figures of 3.0 ppg, 3.7 rpg and 33.3% in the first three contests. 4Abron has scored in double figures in three of the four games with no fewer than six boards in each contest. In TCU s latest win over UAB, he totaled seven points and six boards despite playing only 11 minutes due to foul trouble. 4Abron has started each of the last three games. 4Included among the current stretch was Abron s first double-double featuring a career-high-tying 13 points and 12 rebounds vs. Navy. 4Abron has done most of his offensive damage in the second half of games. He is averaging 5.1 points and shooting 71.4% after halftime compared to figures of 2.1 points and 42.9% prior to intermission. 4Abron is no stranger to competition. He transferred to TCU this past offseason after making 22 starts as a true freshman for Arkansas in 2011-12. He led the Razorbacks in rebounding for the season. 4A prized recruit in high school, Abron was a Parade All- American as a senior at Dallas Seagoville High School. GREEN LEADS SENIOR CLASS TCU features a four-man senior class led by guard/forward Garlon Green, the undisputed veteran of the group. 4Green is No. 2 on the team this season in rebounding and scoring average. 4The only player on the team who has spent more than two years on the roster, Green was named a team co-captain in the preseason along with teammate Amric Fields. 4Green is TCU s active leader in points (890), rebounds (378), 3-pointers (95), games played (104) and starts (59). 4Green has been the team s leading returning scorer each of the last two seasons. He led the 2010-11 squad with an 11.2-point average, while his 9.9-point average last season trailed only graduated seniors Hank Thorns (13.5 ppg) and J.R. Cadot (11.4 ppg). 4Green needs only 110 points to become the 31st member of TCU s 1,000-point club. MCKINNEY STEPPING UP DOWN LOW Adrick McKinney looks virtually like a new player on the court early on this season for TCU. 4McKinney has led TCU once in scoring and twice in rebounding and assists this season. He started each of the opening four games. 4McKinney came up big for TCU during its Nov. 24 win over UAB while starting five-man Devonta Abron sat much of the contest in foul trouble. McKinney responded with nine points and six boards while matching a career high with three assists. 4McKinney led TCU with 16 points, one shy of his career best, during the Nov. 12 win over Centenary. 4While McKinney did make 16 starts a season ago, he shot only 42.1% from the field and 44.6% at the free-throw line. So far this season, he has posted improved respective rates of 51.9% and 60.0%. A NEW AND IMPROVED JARVIS Jarvis Ray appears to be experiencing a breakout season for the Frogs in his third season with the program. He returned to the lineup this fall after sitting out the second half of last season. 4Ray is No. 3 on the team in scoring average and assists. He has started each of TCU s seven contests. 4Ray has scored 53 points for TCU after having only 62 points in 39 games entering the year. 4Ray reached double figures in points in the season s opening three games, including a career-high 14 points vs. SMU. He had scored 10 points or more just one time in his career prior to the current stretch. 4It hasn t just been Ray s offensive efforts that have helped TCU this season. He also leads the squad having drawn six opponent charge fouls, three times that of any other Frog. BUTLER LIND RAISES HIS GAME Nate Butler Lind has taken on a greater role in TCU s offensive attack this season after averaging just 2.6 ppg last season as a first-year junior. 4Butler Lind's scoring average has doubled in his second season on campus. He has four starts for TCU and is second on the team in assists and minutes played. 4Butler Lind is taking his shot more often this season, firing an average of 5.6 spg compared to just 3.0 last season. 4Butler Lind has scored at least four points in all seven games this season, a figure he reached only nine times in 33 contests as a junior. He matched a career high with 10 points in TCU s Nov. 15 home loss to SMU. 4Butler Lind has proven to be an important player on the court for coach Trent Johnson, ranking No. 2 on the team in minutes played despite coming off the bench each of the first three outings. Johnson has often singled out Butler Lind s play and energy following games this season. INJURY STATUS TCU has suffered a pair of season-ending knee injuries so far this season, one to an experienced veteran in Amric Fields and the other to newcomer Aaron Durley. 4Fields suffered a major knee injury just 12 seconds into TCU s home matchup with SMU in the third game of the season. The injury happened on a non-contact play in which he caught the ball running across the lane and attempted to make a cut toward the hoop. 4Big things were expected of Fields after he became TCU s first-ever conference sixth man of the year last season as a sophomore in the Mountain West. He ranked fourth on the team in scoring average (9.6 ppg). 4Fields 543 career points and 66 games played ranked second on the team entering the season. 4Durley also suffered a major knee injury on another noncontact play in preseason workouts, experiencing the setback after coming down with a rebound. Durley underwent surgery and will redshirt this season. 4Durley was looked at as an important addition to the Frogs frontcourt in the offseason. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES 4TCU had connected on at least one 3-pointer in 443 straight games dating back to 1997-98 prior to being held without one during the Nov. 23 loss to Northwestern. The streak, which ranked No. 3 among Big 12 teams, stretched back to a November 22, 1997 home win over LIU-Brooklyn. 4TCU s new 3-point streak now stands at one game. The squad has connected on at least one trey in 660 of its last 662 games dating back to a Feb. 11, 1990 game vs. Texas. 4The Frogs have posted an all-time record of 46-62 (.426) in overtime games and 35-29 (.547) in overtime games at Daniel- Meyer Coliseum. TCU is a combined 4-0 in games that last past two overtimes in its history. A GLANCE BACK AT 2011-12 TCU will try to build off its most successful season in several years, as the 2011-12 Horned Frogs 18-15 overall record marked the program s first winning season since 2004-05 (21-14). 4TCU s 18 victories were four more than in any season since 2004-05. 4TCU finished fifth in the Mountain West with a 7-7 league record. The wins total matched the team s most conference victories in its seven MW seasons despite playing two fewer league games (14) than in previous years (16). 4The Frogs CBI appearance marked the program s first national postseason tournament bid since an NIT quarterfinals run in 2005. 4The 14-3 home record matched the program s best since a 15-1 mark in 2000-01. 4TCU posted two victories over ranked opponents in games vs. No. 11 UNLV and No. 18 New Mexico. It marked the first time in program history the Frogs defeated two top-20 foes in a single season. JOHNSON TAKES PROGRAM REIGNS New head coach Trent Johnson brings an impressive resume with him to TCU, having served previous stints as head coach at Nevada (1999-2004), Stanford (2004-08) and LSU (2008-12). 4Johnson has posted winning marks in each of his three previous head coaching stops at Nevada (79-74), Stanford (80-47) and LSU (67-64). 4Johnson has been named coach of the year in each of the three leagues in which he has worked: the WAC (2003), Pac-10 (2008) and SEC (2009). 4Johnson has guided teams to eight postseason tournament appearances in his 13 seasons, including five NCAA Tournament bids. He led both Nevada (2004) and Stanford (2008) to the Sweet 16. 4Johnson has a history of producing talented players. Two of his pupils (Kirk Snyder-2004 Nevada; Marcus Thornton-2009 LSU) were named conference player of the year. He has seen nine players reach the NBA during his head coaching career. 4TCU fans may remember Johnson from his time as head coach at Nevada, which the Frogs shared WAC membership with during the 2000-01 season. TCU was 2-0 against Johnson s Wolf Pack team during his second year in Reno. OFFSEASON ADDITIONS Six new faces dot this season s TCU roster, four high school additions and two transfers from four-year schools. 4Forward Devonta Abron joins the Frogs from Arkansas, where he started 22 games and led the squad in rebounding as a true freshman last season. 4Abron, who was granted an NCAA waiver in order to be eligible to play this season without sitting out for a year, was one of the nation s top recruits in the class of 2011. He was named a Parade All-American as a senior at Dallas Seagoville High School. 4Guard Christian Gore, the other transfer, appeared in 12 games last season as a true freshman for Brown before moving to TCU in time for the second semester. He suffered a preseason knee injury and is expected to miss the entire 2012-13 season. 4Guard Charles Hill Jr. arrives following a standout career at Fort Worth s Trimble Tech High School. The No. 27 player in Texas and a three-star recruit according to Rivals.com, Hill was a two-time all-district honoree who averaged 16.0 points and 3.1 steals per game while leading the Bulldogs to a 30-5 record and league championship as a senior. 4Guard Clyde Smith III, a Houston native, returns to the state of Texas after playing prep school ball the last three years at The Hotchkiss School in Connecticut. Smith attracted attention from several top college programs and was named the nation s No. 50 point guard and No. 27 overall player in Texas by ESPN.com. 4Guard Kemal Dincer joins the squad from Turkey, where he played for the Istanbul BB senior team that competed in the Turkish Basketball Second League. Dincer hails from a basketball family, as both his grandfather and father played for the Turkish National Team. A TEXAS FLAVOR Ten of the 15 players on this year s Horned Frogs roster are Texas natives, the highest figure for the squad since 2005-06, when 13 of 16 players were from the Lone Star State. 4TCU has four hometown products on the roster who hail from Fort Worth (Kyan Anderson, Charles Hill Jr., Adrick McKinney and Thomas Montigel) and five when including the entire Metroplex with Dallas native Devonta Abron. 4The last time TCU did not have at least one Metroplex native on the roster was 2001-02. 4TCU s second-most popular recruiting region has been Houston, as Aaron Durley, Garlon Green and Clyde Smith III each hail from the area. TCU CONFERENCE HISTORY TCU s arrival in the Big 12 Conference will mark the program s fifth different league in the 102nd year of the program following stints in the Southwest Conference (1923-1996), Western Athletic Conference (1996-2001), Conference USA (2001-05) and Mountain West (2005-2012). FROGS VS. THE BIG 12 TCU owns a long history with several current members of the Big 12, having previously played in the Southwest Conference with Baylor, Texas and Texas Tech. All TCU non-conference home games, as well as its Big 12 home matchups against Texas Tech (Jan. 5) and Oklahoma (March 9), will be carried on FOX Sports Southwest as part of TCU s third-tier broadcast rights granted through the new Big 12 television contract. In addition to its home FSSW contests, the Frogs will have nine conference games carried on the Big 12 Network syndicated package, four on ESPNU, and one each one ESPN2 and Texas Longhorn network. TCU will play an additional FSSW road game at Tulsa, while its fourth and final contest in the South Padre Island Invitational against either Illinois State or UAB will be broadcast by CBS Sports Network. FAMILY TIES The Frogs have five players with family ties to professional and collegiate backgrounds in Garlon Green, Thomas Montigel, Connell Crossland, Nate Butler Lind and Kemal Dincer. 4Green s brother, Gerald Jr., went directly from high school to the NBA and was drafted by the Boston Celtics with the 18th overall selection in the 2005 NBA Draft. Green signed to play for the Indiana Pacers in the 2012 offseason. 4Montigel s father, Bill, is in his 23rd season as TCU s men s golf coach. Prior to his current role, he served eight seasons as an assistant basketball coach and top recruiter at TCU under legendary former head coach Jim Killingsworth. 4Several of Bill Montigel s recruits were key performers on the Frogs back-to-back Southwest Conference championship teams in 1986 and 1987, including TCU Hall of Famer Jaime Dixon, who is now the head coach at Pitt. 4Crossland s cousin is 12-year NBA veteran Larry Hughes, who played college ball one year for St. Louis before being taken No. 8 overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1998 NBA Draft. Hughes most recently played for the Charlotte Bobcats. 4Butler Lind's father, Mario Butler, was an eighth-round selection in the 1979 NBA Draft by Golden State before later becoming a legend in South American basketball while playing professionally in Puerto Rico. 4Butler Lind s sister, Jessica, played college basketball for Canisius from 1998 through 2003. 4Dincer hails from a notable family on the Turkish basketball scene, as both his father (Kemal) and grandfather (Altan) played for the Turkish National Team and won national championships with club team Fenerbahce. 2012-13 GAME-BY-GAME RECAPS TCU 53, CAL POLY 46 Fort Worth, Texas (Daniel-Meyer Coliseum) Nov. 9, 2012 FORT WORTH TCU s new era in men s basketball started just as planned, with the Frogs giving new head coach Trent Johnson a victory in his first game on campus, 53-46, over Cal Poly. TCU regrouped from a slow offensive start to hold off the Mustangs, who lead for nearly the entire first half and by as many as five in the frame. The Frogs went 6-of-9 from the floor to open the second half to move ahead by eight, and Kyan Anderson sank a late 3-pointer with 1:20 remaining to seal the win. TCU won its season opener for the seventh consecutive season and for the 13th time in the last 14 years. Johnson became the sixth straight head coach to start off his Frog tenure with a victory. The Frogs dominated inside during the win, posting big advantages on the boards and scoring in the paint. TCU opened up a 16-point lead by halftime and never looked back, building an edge as large as 31 points late in the contest. The game was a tight affair in the first 10 minutes before TCU went on a 14-1 run to take control. TCU added another impressive run midway through the second half to put the game out of reach, scoring 12 straight points over a 3:45 stretch. Adrick McKinney opened the spurt with seven points, while Jarvis Ray put an exclamation point on the run with a layup at the 10:12 mark that pushed the Frog lead to 58-31. Garlon Green scored 20 points to lead the Frogs after the squad lost Amric Fields to a knee injury early. TCU trailed for the entire game and by as many as 11 points midway through the second half before making a run at SMU. The squad posted a 13-5 spurt thanks in part to three Green field goals to cut the deficit to only three points, 54-51, with 4:27 remaining. SMU remained in front by turning up the defensive effort, holding TCU to only three buckets down the stretch. TCU did have one last opportunity, getting the ball back with under seven seconds left following four straight missed SMU free throws. Kyan Anderson s last-second 3-point shot to tie the game was blocked by guard Ryan Manuel just prior to the final buzzer as the Mustangs prevailed. 2012-13 GAME-BY-GAME RECAPS TCU 44, PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 39 Fort Worth, Texas (Daniel-Meyer Coliseum) Nov. 18, 2012 FORT WORTH TCU found itself in a tight defensive battle, falling behind Prairie View A&M by double digits before rallying in the second half for a 44-39 win at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. TCU struggled out of the gate, falling behind 14-0 in the game s opening six minutes while the Panthers hit four of their first five field-goal attempts. The Frogs chipped away at the lead from there, relying on defense to keep the Panthers within check. The squad held Prairie View without a basket and to only six free throws for the final 14:06 of the first half. The second half started much like the first for TCU, as Prairie View jumped back out to a nine-point lead. Kyan Anderson got the rally moving with a 3-pointer to start a crucial 14-2 run. He finished the spurt with his second trey to give the Frogs their largest lead at 35-32 with 6:06 remaining. The Panthers would tie the contest again at 35-all before another big play by Anderson, who laid the ball in off a nice feed from senior guard Nate Butler Lind. Abron took the game over from there, scoring his five straight points that sealed the contest in TCU s favor. Devonta Abron posted his first career double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Frogs. Trailing by five points early in the second half, Abron began to make his imposing presence felt in the paint. He scored seven points in a five-and-ahalf minute stretch early in the stanza to put TCU up buy two, 32-30. Abron later started a key 6-0 run with 4:36 remaining with another basket inside, while Jarvis Ray added a layup off a nice feed from Abron. Devonta Abron led the Horned Frogs with 12 points. TCU had a difficult night from the field, as NU held the squad to only 26.5% shooting overall, its worst figure of the season. TCU did manage to win the rebounding battle (38-33) while holding the Wildcats to only 38.3% shooting themselves, but NU outscored the Frogs by 26 points beyond the arc (6-of-19) and at the free-throw line (13-of-14). One day after a dismal offensive showing in a 55-31 loss to Northwestern, TCU responded with its best offensive game of the young campaign. The squad scored a season high in points and shot 55.8% from the field. It also went a season-best 17-of-21 at the free-throw line. The Frogs needed the points, as UAB gave TCU all it could handle with its up-tempo attack. The two teams traded the advantage seven times, with no team leading by more than eight points. The Frogs built a seven-point edge late in the contest before holding on for the victory. UAB s Jordan Swing sank a 3-pointer to cut the lead to just one point with 2.8 seconds left, but Anderson answered by sinking a pair of free throws. Blazer guard Jekore Taylor had a shot at another 3 to tie the game at the buzzer, but it bounced off the front of the rim as time expired.
