Nobel Peace Prize The Nobel Peace Prize is an international prize which is awarded annually by the Norwegian Nobel Committee according to guidelines laid down in Alfred Nobel's will. The Peace Prize is one of five prizes that have been awarded annually since 1901 under the auspices of the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm for outstanding contributions in the fields of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace. Starting in 1969, a Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel has also been awarded. Whereas the other prizes are awarded by specialist committees based in Sweden, the Peace Prize is awarded by a committee appointed by the Norwegian Storting. According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize is to go to whoever "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses". The prize includes a medal, a personal diploma, and a large sum of prize money (currently 8 million Swedish crowns). The Nobel Peace Prize has been called "the world's most prestigious prize". With the award to The European Union in 2012, a total of 101 individuals and 24 organizations have been awarded the Peace Prize. The Prize is awarded at a ceremony in the Oslo City Hall on December 10, the date on which Alfred Nobel died.

Sample Essay Prompt: What qualities must a person demonstrate in order to overcome an obstacle? Choose two qualities that Bethany Hamilton demonstrates that helped her overcome the obstacle of losing her arm in a shark attack. Use text evidence from the text. Surfs up! Bethany Hamilton is an experienced surfer who had to overcome a major obstacle in her life. While surfing one morning, just like any other day, she was attacked by a shark, which resulted in the loss of her entire left arm. After recovering from this horrific accident, she got back on the board and has continued winning many surfing competitions, and other awards. In order to overcome an obstacle, one must demonstrate determination and bravery. These are two qualities that Bethany Hamilton has most certainly demonstrated since the shark attack. One quality that Bethany Hamilton demonstrates is determination, which means to never give up. The article, Your Personal Best: Bethany Hamilton is Back on the Board, states that, Three weeks after her accident, Hamilton was back in the ocean, surfing again, this time with a modified board that made it easier to paddle with one arm. Before long, she began surfing competitively again... This means that soon after being attacked by a shark, losing a limb, and recovering from a surgery to close the wound, she quickly returned to surfing, a sport she loved. Clearly, Bethany Hamilton showed determination when she did not allow the experience of being attacked by a shark or the thought of learning how to surf all over again with only one arm, using a new type of surf board, keep her from participating in the sport she has been passionate about since she was five years old. Some people would allow their new handicap to keep them from doing what they love. Bethany did not allow this experience to stop her from surfing and following her dreams. Another quality that Bethany Hamilton demonstrates is bravery. During an interview, Bethany Hamilton said, Courage doesn't mean you don't get afraid. Courage means you don't let fear stop you. This means that even though Bethany may have been afraid of surfing again, she did not let that fear keep her from getting back to her passion. In addition, according to Bethany Hamilton: From Surfer to Celebrity, She's (Bethany Hamilton) painted a special pattern on her surf board that helps ward off shark and she no longer goes surfing during the early morning - a shark's favorite feeding time. Obviously, if she changed her surfing schedule and altered her board to prevent shark attacks, she is afraid that it will happen again, but she continues to surf anyway. Facing her fear, rather than running the other way shows bravery. To conclude, Bethany Hamilton is an excellent example of someone who has overcome an obstacle. Learning to surf again with only arm, after only three weeks of being attacked by a shark, and getting back into the water and facing the fear of experiencing another shark attack show both determination and bravery. Bethany Hamilton is a great role model for people who have had to overcome an obstacle.
