J. Hopkins, 9-8 OT Game Preview Navy (4-8, 2-4 ) will close out the 2011 campaign Saturday evening at Homewood Field in Baltimore where the Mids will battle second-ranked Johns Hopkins... the 85th edition of the Navy-Johns Hopkins game is slated for an 8:00 pm faceoff. The Mids are coming off a 14-9 loss against arch rival Army... Navy owned a 7-4 halftime lead, however, the Black Knights outscored the Mids 10-2 in the second half to secure the victory. Johns Hopkins played the part of Army in its own rivalry game last weekend in College Park against Maryland... after falling behind 7-2 at the half, the Blue Jays outscored the Terps 9-4 in the second half and forced the game into extra minutes... with just 16 seconds left in the overtime period, senior attackman Kyle Wharton scored the game-winning goal for the Jays. Saturday s contest will be televised by ESPNU with Carter Blackburn (play by play) and former Denver head coach Jamie Munro (analyst) calling the action. Additionally, the game will be broadcast over the radio waves by WNAV 1430 AM with Pete Medhurst handling the call, beginning with the Navy lacrosse pregame show at 7:45 pm... an audio feed of the game will also be streamed online via Navy All-Access with live stats available at NavySports.com. More on the Blue Jays Eleventh-year head coach Dave Pietramala has Johns Hopkins playing at its best as it heads into Saturday s contest against the Mids... the Blue Jays have won six of their last seven, including four in a row... wins during the latest winning streak include Virginia, North Carolina, Albany and Maryland. The Blue Jays two losses this season have been to Princeton and a double-overtime loss to Syracuse. Johns Hopkins is ranked among the nation s top five in four statistical categories - #3 in scoring defense (6.82), #3 in scoring margin (+4.27), #4 in faceoff percentage (64.1) and #5 in win percentage (81.8)... if the Blue Jays have any faults, it comes within their special teams play... both the extra-man (26.8) and the man-down (66.7) squads are ranked 39th out of 60 teams. Goalkeeper Pierce Bassett has had a strong sophomore season... he is ranked third nationally in goals-against average (6.57) and fifth in save percentage (60.0). Perhaps no faceoff man in the country has benefitted more from the change in rules than senior Matt Dolente... he is winning 66.8 percent (125-187) of his draws this season and is ranked No. 3 in the country. Anchoring the offense are senior attackman Chris Boland and second-year attackman Zach Palmer... Boland leads the team with 34 points on 24 goals and 10 assists... Palmer has contributed 32 points (16-16). Taking the Field In... 10 Since the start of the 2004 season, Navy owns a 46-5 record when scoring 10 or more goals. The Mids are 3-2 this season when scoring 10 or more goals, while Johns Hopkins has scored 10 or more goals in nine of its 11 games. 9 Navy s man-down unit has surrendered just nine goals this season, squelching 24 of the 33 scoring opportunities for a 72.7 percentage... the Mids are ranked 22nd in that category. 8 Freshman attackman Tucker Hull has scored a goal in eight-straight games which is tied as the nation s 15th-longest streak... he is the only Navy player to record a point in all 12 games this season. 7 Seven of Navy s 2011 opponents are ranked in this week s edition of the USILA Coaches Poll - Johns Hopkins (2), Maryland (7), North Carolina (9), Bucknell (12), Colgate (16), Army (17) and Loyola (20). 6 Since being inserted into the starting lineup March 12 against Lafayette, sophomore midfielder Jay Mann has recorded a goal or an assists in six of the last seven games. 5 Junior faceoff specialist Logan West needs seven wins on Saturday to break into the top five of Navy s all-time career faceoff wins list... he has won 174 over three seasons. 4 Senior midfielder Andy Warner is coming off his fourth multi-assist performance of the year... his two assists last week gave him his 100th-career point, as he became only the 29th player in school history to reach the 100-point milestone. 3 Just three players on the current Navy roster have registered points against Hopkins... Andy Warner (1-6=7), Marty Gallagher (0-1=1), Jay Mann (1-0=1). 2 Attackmen Tucker Hull and Sam Jones mark the first Navy rookie tandem to score 20 goals in a season in program history... Hull is pacing the team with 23 goals, while Jones has scored 22. 1 Seven of the last 12 games between Navy and Johns Hopkins have been decided by one goal, including five of the last eight Schedule / Results 4-8 / 2-4 Home: 3-3 Away: 1-5 Neutral: 0-0 February Date Rk Opponent (Rk) Result / Time 12 RV/NR VMI W 14-8 19 RV/NR at Loyola (14/14) L 8-9 25 NR/RV at N. More than 10,000 fans watched Navy snap a 36- game losing streak which dated back to 1975. It was an uphill climb for the Mids as they found themselves down 5-0 after the opening quarter of play. Navy s offense and defense complemented one another for the next 15 minutes, as the Midshipmen scored six unanswered goals to take a 6-5 lead into halftime. Senior midfielder Patrick Moran sparked the run with a goal just 40 seconds into the second quarter. After being held scoreless the entire second period, Hopkins came out of the locker room and scored three straight goals to take a 8-6 advantage. With under 20 seconds to go in the quarter, Navy patiently worked the ball around and put it in the stick of sophomore Ryan O Leary. O Leary found senior attackman Brendan Connors cutting towards the middle and Connors trimmed the lead to one, 8-7. Just one goal was surrendered in the fourth quarter, an extra-man strike by the Mids. Moran scored his second goal of the day on 17-yarder off a pass from fellow senior Evan Sullivan with 9:39 remaining. Senior draw specialist Robby Battle put the ball in the Mids hands with a faceoff win and Warner got off what he had hoped would be the game-winner, but Bassett snatched it out of the air 52 seconds into the extra frame. The Jays cleared the ball and Wickham came up with a big save on a Michael Kimmel shot. Seconds later, senior long pole Zack Schroeder got a piece of Kimmel s stick, jarring the ball loose. Senior close defenseman Gordon Lawson picked up the ground ball and got it defensive midfielder Marty Gallagher. Coming out of a timeout, Moran made a run at the goal, finding Nikk Davis open on the crease. Davis made a leaping catch and sent the ball just over the top of the cross bar with 15 seconds left. With the ball back in Navy s hands, Warner used a Davis screen to scramble past Drenan for the game-winner. 2011 Johns Hopkins Schedule/Results 9-2 / Independent Home: 4-1 Away: 3-1 Neutral: 2-0 Date Opponent Result / Time 2-19 at Towson W 10-6 2-22 at Delaware W 18-5 2-26 SIENA W 16-6 3-5 PRINCETON L 3-8 3-9 MANHATTAN W 10-3 3-12 vs. UMBC + W 16-5 3-19 at Syracuse L 4-5 2OT 3-26 VIRGINIA W 12-11 4-3 vs. North Carolina ^ W 10-9 4-8 ALBANy W 11-6 4-16 at Maryland W 12-11 OT 4-23 NAvy 8:00 PM 4-30 LOyOLA 2:00 PM 5-6 at Army 7:00 pm + Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic; Baltimore, Md. ^ Konica Minolta Big City Classic; E. Since the beginning of the 2004 campaign, Navy has lost 20 of its 47 true road games (neutral sites not included). The last time the Mids only managed one road win was 1999... Navy defeated Penn in its road opener, but lost at Duke, Delaware, Hofstra and Johns Hopkins... in 1996, the Mids were winless on the road.
