By Sam Roach Last Friday night at Lake Washington High School, the King s Knights created their own opportunities and took advantage of Cedar Park Christian s mistakes to jump out to a 44-0 halftime lead on their way to a 51-13 Cascade Conference victory. Leading the Knights offensively was Caleb Perry with 130 all purpose yards (91 rushing yards, 39 receiving yards) and three touchdowns, Andrew Cline with 76 rushing yards and two touchdowns and Jack Van Dyke with 37 rushing yards. King s scored early in the first quarter on a 44 yard run by Perry and late in the quarter on a two yard run by Cline to go ahead 13-0. In the second quarter, King s used an opportunistic play on both defense and special teams adding 31 unanswered points to further pad their lead. Leading 13-0, Perry blocked a punt deep in Eagle territory that Cline scooped up and returned for a score. The Knights followed it up with more pressure on the next series that forced a muffed snap on a punt that gave King s the first and goal on the one yard line that set up Perry s second touchdown. Later in the quarter Perry recovered a fumble that set up a six play drive that led to a Van Dyke touchdown and in the closing moments of the quarter, Taylor Schoenfeld scooped up a fumble and ran to the Cedar Park 15 with seven seconds remaining that King s converted to points with a 33 yard Van Dyke field goal to close out the half. In the second half, King s reserves went toe to toe with the Cedar Park starters trading touchdowns in the third quarter. Scoring for the Knight s was jun- ior running back Logan Perrigo on a seven yard run. Leading King s defensively were Jordan Burtt and Jerad Stretton with three solo tackles each. Junior lineman Robbie Simonton also added a fumble recovery in the fourth quarter. King s conference record now stands at 3-1. The Knight s next game is this Friday night against the Granite Falls Tigers at Woolsey Stadium. It is both Senior Night and Alumni night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00.

By Sam Roach Ask anyone who has watched a lot of high school football and one of the common stories that they will tell is how tempting it is for sixteen or seventeen year old kids to underestimate their opponent. It just happens. They re better than their opponent in every facet of the game and everyone knows it. The problem is, the opponent doesn t get the memo, or if they do, they don t care. The opponent comes out with this, what have we got to lose? attitude and steals a ball game. It s happened to King s a time or two. For example, back in Week 4 in the 1985 season, King s got off to a hot start. They were 3-0. They d beaten Granite Falls, Sultan and Tolt. They were on track for a conference title showdown with South Whidbey. First however, they had to play Lakewood. Lakewood was 0-3 and going nowhere.except to the stadium to play a football game. When the mud cleared, sorry for the botched expression but the game was played at Lakewood and there s never any dust on that field. ever, the scoreboard read Lakewood 16, King s 13. What had happened was simple enough, King s believed their press clippings and played half baked while Lakewood came out and played lights out and got a big W, the only W they would get that season. I m bringing this story up to make a point. The 2016 King s Knights are different. Up to this point in the season, they haven t taken a game off in a manner of speaking. They don t play to the level of their competition, they force the competition to play to their level. They start fast and they finish strong. They have this coach who keeps preaching the longer we play, the better we get, and they believe him. They scored first at Burling- ton. They were relentless at Lakeside. They just wouldn't go away. And against Archbishop Murphy, they went toe to toe with that team. In the recap in the Herald, following the game, Archbishop Murphy s coach Jerry Jenson implied that in the first half especially, that the Wildcats hadn t played their best game but so what? As far as King s was concerned that wasn t the point. They couldn t control how well Archbishop Murphy played, but they could control how well they played and they played a good game. They didn t win on the scoreboard but, speaking of that scoreboard, there was no running clock that night either. As far as the rest of the season has gone, well, statistics and game film don t lie. The 2016 King s Knights have not stooped to the level of their opponents. Against Cedarcrest, Coach Jim Shapiro was concerned about the Red- wolves team speed. King s gave an effort that matched it. 28-0 in the first quarter, 38-0 at the half. Next week against South Whidbey, the starting unit put 46 points on the board in the first quarter and then watched the rest of the game from the sidelines. And last week against Cedar Park Christian, it was 44-0 at halftime. The bottom line, they re playing like champions. Consider this however, as good as the offense is, King s might play better defense than offense. Folks, that starting defense hasn t given up a point since Week 3. All they ve done is score 24 points of their own, created turnovers and consistently given that offense a short field from which to score. In conclusion, King s isn t underestimating the competition, they re playing like they should and, if this continues, it s going to be a fun season.

The EMAK Report: Down on the Farm: J.V. Knights 36, CPC 18 (Most of the pictures on this page of the J.V. Knights were taken Friday night) By Sam Roach At Woolsey Stadium last Monday, King s defeated Cedar Park Christian 36-18 for their second victory of the 2016 season. After falling behind early, King s scored on their first offensive possession when Ben Haberman scored on a 54 yard run midway through the first quarter. Michael Gabelein added the two point conversion. In the second period, Gabelein scored on an eight yard run and Max Lane added the PAT to extend King s lead to 15-6. In the third quarter, Gabelein added his second touchdown on a 54 yard run from scrimmage giving the Knight s a 22-6 lead before Cedar Park added a touchdown of their own on a return of a muffed King s snap. King s final two scores came on big plays in the fourth quarter. For most of the game King s effectively shut down Cedar Park s ground game forcing the Eagles to throw and early in the fourth quarter, Hayden Kirkpatrick made them pay. Picking off an errant throw, Kirkpatrick ran down the right sideline untouched for a pick six. Later in the quarter, Danny Bogan hit Davis Campbell on a slant route that Campbell turned into a 54 yard touchdown to complete the Knight s scoring. The J.V. Knight s next game will be next Monday at Granite Falls. Kickoff will be at 5:30
