SURREY CCC YOUTH ASSESSMENTS 2016 U-10 to U-17 (in 2017 season) Surrey CCC working in partnership with Surrey s cricket clubs and schools to develop the next generation of Surrey cricketers

SURREY CCC s YOUTH ASSESSMENTS 2016 PLAYER PATHWAY This document has been produced by Surrey CCC s Performance Department to help spread the word amongst cricket clubs and schools across Surrey about our upcoming Youth Assessments, to which promising young cricketers can be nominated to attend. Surrey CCC have adjusted how the Youth Assessments are organised for 2016 in order to better manage the increasing numbers of players nominated by clubs and schools and better compliment our Talent Identification processes. The following pages explain some of the key programmes that Surrey CCC s Performance Department organise and how they fit together into the Player Pathway, which the most promising young cricketers progress through on their way to potentially becoming professional cricketers. If you know of any promising young cricketers with the potential to join our Player Pathway, please do nominate them for an Assessment. Likewise, please do circulate this information to relevant people within your school or cricket club so we can see as many talented young cricketers at the Assessments. SURREY CCC s YOUTH ASSESSMENTS 2016 U-10 to U-15 (in 2017 season) Now is the time to nominate your promising young cricketers. Below you will find information about how the Assessments are organised at each of the age groups from U-10 to U-15. Please note these age groups relate to the 2017 season; in other words the 2016 Youth Assessments are aimed at this year s U-9 to U-14 players. It is from these Assessments that the Performance Dept will select 2017 winter-training groups, which begin training in January 2017. We will select CAG (County Age Group) winter-training groups at each of the U-11 to U-15 age groups and Performance Cricket winter-training groups at each of the U-10 to U-14 age groups. U-10 to U-12 (in 2017 season) This summer Surrey CCC s Performance Department will be running a series of assessments to which cricket clubs and schools in the county can nominate their promising players. A nomination form is at the end of this document. Players nominated to us by cricket clubs and schools will be invited to a specific Phase 1 Assessment, on one of the following dates: Wednesday 20-July Friday 22-July Sunday 24-July The Phase 1 Assessments are for NEW players to SCCC only; players who were not selected into a 2016 winter-training squad. Players who have attended assessments previously but who were not selected by Surrey CCC are considered NEW players, along with any who are attending assessments for the first time. Following completion of the CAG Assessments we will be in a position to confirm 2017 Performance Cricket and CAG winter-training squads (all of which commence their programmes from January 2017). U-10 players (in 2017 season) As we do not organize winter-training on a CAG or Performance Cricket basis at this young age group, the outcome of the U-10 Phase 1 Assessments will be a number of players being selected into particular U-10 winter-training Performance Courses. There are no CAG Assessments at the U-10 age group. There are pre-christmas (October & November 2016) Performance Courses and post-christmas (January to March 2017) Performance Courses for U-10 players. It is from the Phase 1 Assessments that we will identify a number of players to attend a further round of assessments the Performance Assessments, as follows: U-10: Sunday 4-September U-11: Monday 29-August U-12: Tuesday 30-August Players invited to attend Performance Assessments will include those involved in the 2016 Performance Cricket summer-match programme, alongside those players identified at Phase 1 Assessments. In 2016 we will be holding the Phase 1 Assessments at the Surrey CCC Indoor Cricket Centre at George Abbot School (Fri 22nd July & Sun 24th July) and at the KBCC at Kia Oval (Wed 20th July). Due to the overall number of players that will be observed at this stage we need to ensure that we can complete the process in the time we have available. We are now unable to cater for rain delays and so to ensure the process runs smoothly we will operate all assessment sessions indoors. A number of U-11 and U-12 players from the Performance Assessments will subsequently be invited to attend a further round of Assessments (CAG Assessments). These will be held indoors in October & November 2016. The CAG Assessments will also be attended by a number of players who were involved in the CAG set-up this summer.

SURREY CCC s YOUTH ASSESSMENTS 2016 U-10 to U-15 (in 2017 season) U-13 to U-15 (in 2017 season) U-16 to U-17 (in 2017 season) This summer Surrey CCC s Performance Department will be running a series of assessments to which cricket clubs and schools in the county can nominate their promising players. A nomination form is at the end of this document. Those players nominated to us by cricket clubs and schools will be invited to specific Performance Assessments, as follows: U-13: Wednesday 31-August U-14: Thursday 1-September U-15: Friday 2-September Players invited to attend Performance Assessments will include those involved in the 2016 Performance Cricket summer-match programme, alongside new players nominated by clubs and schools. There are no Phase 1 Assessments in 2016 at these age groups. However, the Youth Assessment programme in 2017 may well incorporate Phase 1 Assessments as well as Performance Assessments at each age group (U-10 to U-15). These Performance Assessments are the first stage in identifying players for selection into particular winter-training groups next winter, as follows: Performance winter-training groups at the U-13 and U-14 age groups (not at U-15) County Age Group (CAG) winter-training groups at the U-13, U-14 and U-15 age group In 2016 we will be holding all of the Performance Assessments at the Surrey CCC Indoor Cricket Centre at George Abbot School. Due to the overall number of players that will be observed at this stage we need to ensure that we can complete the process in the time we have available. We are now unable to cater for rain delays and so to ensure the process runs smoothly we will operate all assessment sessions indoors. Surrey CCC s Performance Department will run assessments for U-16 and U-17 players in January 2017, ahead of a winter-training programme for those age groups. Cricket clubs and schools in the county can nominate their promising players at these age groups using the same nomination form (at the end of this document), whilst understanding that we may not be in touch with nominated players until closer to January 2017. There are no Phase 1, Performance or Phase 2 Assessments at these age groups. Instead, players are invited to an assessment session (with the possibility of a further call-back session). These Assessments will also be held at the Surrey CCC Indoor Cricket Centre at George Abbot School. Those nominating players at these age groups should appreciate that those players are in competition with players already involved in Surrey CCC s EPG (Elite Player Group, which include Academy players and EPP [Emerging Player Programme] players) and as such opportunities for selection into a winter-training group, and summer match programme will be limited. Surrey CCC will be looking for nominations of players that clubs and schools genuinely feel should be considered for Academy matches, EPP matches, U-17 matches and have the potential to play Surrey 2nd XI cricket. U-18 players (in 2017 season) Players who are aged U-18 and above should not be nominated in this way. Instead, they should request a trial via the email address: trials@surreycricket.com where they should attach a cricketing CV. A number of players from the Performance Assessments will subsequently be invited to attend a final round of Assessments (CAG Assessments). These will be held indoors in October & November 2016. The CAG Assessments will also be attended by a number of players who were involved in the CAG set-up this summer. Following completion of the CAG Assessments we will be in a position to confirm 2017 Performance and CAG winter-training squads (all of which commence their programmes from January 2017).

OUTCOME OF ASSESSMENTS All parents, players and nominators should understand that by attending an assessment, two outcomes are possible. Players will either be selected into the Surrey CCC Player Pathway, or not. All involved should understand that some of these decisions will be difficult due to the similarities between players at the boundaries of our programmes. We operate an open-door policy on selection and will be very happy to see players not selected on this occasion at future assessments. Players develop at different rates and therefore players have the ability to improve over time, which we are keen to be aware of. We wish all players to ensure that they develop a love of the game in order to stay involved in the sport for as long as they can, at whatever level their potential takes them to. The outcome of a player s Phase 1 Assessment and/or Performance Assessment will be communicated to them by email, once all the appropriate assessment stages have been completed. WINTER COACHING PROGRAMMES JUNIOR COACHING COURSES (U-6 TO U-16) Surrey CCC s Development Department organise a programme of coaching courses for U-6s to U-16s. These coaching courses are open to all children, of all abilities, and teach the basic skills of batting, bowling and fielding through group coaching and games. They are 10-week courses that take place both pre-christmas (October to December) and post-christmas (January to March) and are run at venues throughout the county. The emphasis is on developing confidence, skills and an enjoyment of the game. A range of Junior Courses are also run during school holidays (summer, Easter, half-terms and Christmas). If young cricketers on these courses (ages U-11 upwards) are considered to have the potential to play Performance Cricket their details will be forwarded to the Performance Department who will look to assess them at the appropriate time to best consider their potential involvement in the Pathway. For further information about these courses, including details on this coming winter s programme, (starting October 2015) please visit http://www.surreycricketfoundation.org/ PERFORMANCE COURSES (U-8 & U-9) These courses are advanced post-christmas coaching courses, run over 10-weeks (January to March) to which we invite the most promising U-8 & U-9 cricketers from pre-christmas Junior Coaching Courses, as well as a number of those who played U-9 Inner-County or CAG cricket in the preceding summer. Performance Courses are one of the primary means of identifying players who may have the potential to play Performance Cricket and/or County Age Group cricket at U-9. The most promising U-8 & U-9 year-olds from the post-christmas Performance Courses (as well as any other promising players identified on post-christmas Junior Coaching Courses) will be recommended for and the U-9 Performance squads. WOMEN AND GIRLS CRICKET Surrey CCC organise a girls CAG (County Age Group) cricket programme, as well as a Senior Women side. There are two phases of Assessments for selection into girls CAG winter-training squads at each of the following age groups: U-11, U-13 & U-15. The initial phase will be held on Sunday 4-September 2016; an Assessment document and Nomination Form will be circulated in due course to cricket clubs and schools. A number of players from the initial phase of Assessments will be invited to a second phase of Assessments, to be held in November 2016. From those Assessments we will select final CAG winter-training squads. We also organise girls cricket at U-17. Assessments for that squad take place in early January 2017. For further information about Girls CAG cricket please email performance@surreycricket.com.
