BOB QUINN Executive Vice President and General Manager Years with Lions: Years in NFL: 7 QUINN MAKES HIS MARK Bob Quinn, hired January, 6 as executive vice president and general manager, oversees the entire Lions football operations and reports directly to Owner and Chairman of the Board Martha Firestone Ford. NEW LIONS LEADER NEW TO DETROIT IN 6 ¾ Since joining the Lions, Quinn, who spent the previous 6 seasons with the New England Patriots, has begun Players acquired by Quinn so far in 6 building the football foundation which he believes will provide the team with the optimum chance for success. During his introductory press conference, he quickly set forth his vision. ¾ Among the numerous free agents acquired by Quinn this offseason was WR Marvin Jones, considered by many to be the top free agent wide receiver on the market. Additionally, Quinn also retained key Lions free agents, including DT Haloti Ngata and LB Tahir Whitehead. ¾ His initial draft class featured the selection of the most linemen (offense and defense) in a Lions draft since 989, highlighted by the team s first three picks (T Taylor Decker, DT A Shawn Robinson and C Graham Glasgow). PATRIOTS PAST During his time with New England, Quinn served a number of roles in the player personnel department, including most recently as Director of Pro Scouting from -5. While he worked as Director of Pro Scouting, the Patriots won the 4 Super Bowl and four-straight AFC East Division championships. ¾ From 9-, Quinn was the Assistant Director of Pro Personnel. For the previous nine years, Quinn worked in several different capacities within the Patriots player personnel department, including roles in college scouting as a National Scout and Regional Scout. He played an integral role in evaluating and procuring talent for the team through the NFL draft process, free agency, trades, etc. ¾ While working for the New England Patriots, he helped contribute to one of the most impressive stretches in NFL history, one that produced four Super Bowl titles, including the most recent championship in 4 (Super Bowl XLIX). Since, Quinn s first year with New England, the Patriots have won six AFC Championships, 3 AFC East titles, + games in a season times (which includes the past six years) and + games in 4 of his 6 seasons. ¾ As Director of Pro Scouting, Quinn utilized all possible methods to seek the Patriots next player. This approach had a tremendous impact on the Patriots Super Bowl XLIX championship as seven players, who were acquired (including two via trades) after the start of the regular season, all played in the Super Bowl. ¾ Another key player during the Super Bowl XLIX Championship run, CB Malcolm Butler, signed with the club after a rookie minicamp tryout. Butler, who sealed the Super Bowl victory with a goal line interception, would join All-Pro CB Darrelle Revis in the New England secondary. Prior to serving as Director of Pro Scouting, Quinn was the Patriots assistant director of pro personnel. Prior to that, he worked in college scouting as the team s national scout in 8 and as a regional scout from 4-7. ¾ In 8, the Patriots drafted LB Jerod Mayo in the first round and WR Matthew Slater in the fifth round. Mayo was a two-time Pro Bowl linebacker and Slater has become one of the league s elite special teams players having earned five Pro Bowl selections and three All- Pro honors. WHAT TO WATCH FOR STAFFORD'S SPECTACLE For the third consecutive game and fourth time this season, QB Matthew Stafford led a trailing Lions team victory when Detroit defeated the visiting Redskins -7 last Sunday. Down four with :5 left to play, Stafford led Detroit on a six-play, 75-yard drive in just :49 seconds, capping it off with a game-winning 8-yard touchdown pass to WR Anquan Boldin. It marked the third consecutive week that the eight-year vet out of Georgia has led a come-from-behind victory and fourth overall this season. All four Detroit Lions victories in 6 have come via game-winning drives led by the former No. overall pick. Stafford now has 4 career game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime on his résumé and a league-best since the beginning of the 4 season when Jim Caldwell took over as head coach. Caldwell on why QB Matthew Stafford has been clutch in late-game situations: I attribute to the fact, number one, he does not back down from tough situations. He relishes in them, he doesn t get nervous and he s got a real clear and focused mind during the time when it s sometimes a little bit of chaos all around you. But he rises to the occasion time and time again. He s certainly delivered for us. Caldwell has seen Stafford provide a flair for the dramatics time and time again and when asked what his message to his quarterback was before the final drive against Washington, his answer was short and sweet. Caldwell on if he said anything to Stafford before the final drive: Yeah, you know, because he practices so much I just told him it s a great time for some lategame heroics. You know, he just kind of nods and goes to work. Stafford on what he expects of himself in late-game situations: I expect to win every time I get the ball. It s not always going to happen that way. You know, Tennessee, we had a chance and I didn t make the play to win. But I expect to go out there and win. I believe in the guys that I ve got in the huddle with me. I think they believe in me, and this is NFL football, this happens. Just glad we made the plays. Through his first seven games of the season, Stafford ranks fourth in the NFL in touchdown passes (5), third in passer rating (5.7), eighth in passing yards (,94) and fourth in completion percentage (68.). Dating back to Week of last season, Stafford leads the NFL in touchdown passes with 34. Last Sunday also marked Stafford s th career game in the National Football League. Through his first career games, he ranks at the top or near the top of several passing totals among players in their first games. ¾ Passing Yards (7,89) st ¾ Completions (,4) st ¾ Touchdown Passes (78) t-4th ¾ 3-Yard Passing Games (3) 4th ¾ 35-Yard Passing Games (8) st ¾ 4-Yard Passing Games (7) nd ¾ 3+ Touchdown Games (7) 5th By playing in his th career game against Washington, Stafford also reached the minimum number of games to qualify among the best passers in NFL history with respect to passing yards per game. With a mark of 78.9 (7,89 yards), Stafford entered the NFL s all-time list in second place, trailing only Saints QB Drew Brees (8.5) who s compiled that number in 3 career games. NEXT MAN UP Coming into Week 8 the Lions have showed that no matter who suits up on Sundays, they will be ready to play. Key players such as DE Ezekiel Ansah, LB DeAndre Levy and RB Theo Riddick have all missed time over the course of the last few weeks, and Detroit watched starting CB Darius Slay leave last week s contest against the Redskins early in the second quarter. However, despite an array of injuries the Lions haven t missed a beat as they continue to look to the next man on the depth chart. Coming off of a victory that highlighted QB Matthew Stafford s th career-game and 4th career game-winning drive, the Lions head to Houston on a three-game winning streak that has featured its fair share of unsung heroes. Lions S Don Carey on substitutes filling in for key starters: It does not change anything. It does not change how we prepare, it doesn t change the plays we call. Truly, when we say next man up, it s not a mantra. That s an expectation. So guys are continuing to prepare whether they re a start or not. Guys are going to continue to play and just try to keep this train going. Caldwell on how much the secondary would miss Slay if he were to not play given the speed of Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins: We go from week-to-week. We had five guys missing last week, this week s going to be no different. We re going to have some guys missing, but our job is to win games. We don t look at what we can t do and who s not there, and all that kind of stuff. We just look at the fact that we ve got to get our guys ready to play and play well, regardless of who we face. A look back at last week s matchup consisted of many players stepping up to the challenge to fill larger roles. The Lions saw their pass rush ramp up against Washington QB Kirk Cousins after expressing concern in that area, thanks in large part to an all-hands-on-deck approach against the Redskins. Caldwell on why the team was able to rush the quarterback against the Redskins: I think it was a collaborative effort. I think there were a lot of guys that had an impact on the guys that got close to him, were able to hit him and knock him down. We had two sacks obviously that came through and close to a couple more. But I just think overall that it was a real good effort upfront. In the backfield, Lions RB Zach Zenner started at running back for the second straight week and only the second start of his career, as he took advantage of the opportunity by rushing for his first-career touchdown. He wasn t the only Lion to capitalize on increased opportunities. Lions S Rafael Bush registered the first sack of his career in the second quarter against Washington. Lions DE Brandon Copeland forced the first fumble of his career that was recovered by DETROIT LIONS WEEKLY RELEASE

S Tavon Wilson for Wilson s third-career fumble recovery. Rounding out the Lions receiving quad are Tate and Roberts. Reserve DE Kerry Hyder not only leads Detroit with Tate has re-established his dual-threat versatility out of five sacks, but also came up with his first-career fumble the backfield in light of recent injuries to multiple running recovery on Detroit s second takeaway of the game against backs, logging 68 all-purpose yards in Week 6 against Los the Redskins. Detroit s vital contributions from reserves Angeles. In Week 7 against Washington, Tate displayed his have been a sustainable ingredient to the team s 4-3 record. ability to gain yards after the catch, as he currently leads As they prepare to face a 4-3 Houston Texans team with a the NFL in that category with 83. Caldwell on if having success despite injuries helps the team mentally: You know, it s week-to-week. We preach it all along, we talk about it. It s a well-worn phrase in terms of, we expect the next guy to step up, and we keep the standards high. I think our coaches do a good job, a really good job, of getting those guys ready, and I think that s important. You ve got to win under all circumstances, nobody s looking for any excuse making, or anything of that nature. RECEIVING REPORT An undeniable component necessary for any successful offense in the NFL is an effective receiving corps. When it comes to Detroit, the Lions are unique in the sense that not only does each player bring something different to the table, but the foursome of WR Anquan Boldin, WR Golden Tate, WR Marvin Jones Jr. and WR Andre Roberts have debunked the myth that NFL offense s need an established No. receiver. Instead of the typical one-standout-playerper-team mold, the Lions offense has a deadly four-headed monster at its disposal. In his first-year in Detroit, Jones Jr. has proven himself indispensable on the Lions offense. Ranked fifth in the NFL in receiving yards with 63 through Week 7, Jones has scored four touchdowns through seven games and has made key receptions when the offense was in need of a momentum boost. Most recently, in Week 7 against Washington, Jones connected with QB Matthew Stafford for a 5-yard catch over All-Pro Redskins CB Josh Norman that set up a Lions touchdown. Jones on his mentality when he s downfield one-onone: I m going to win percent of the time. As a receiver you have to have that mentality. If you don t have that mentality, then you shouldn t be playing receiver. I think when I m on the sideline or wherever, whenever the ball, is up that I get the ball. Matt (Stafford) does a good job of throwing it in different spots for me to go get. As another first-year Lion, Boldin s veteran leadership complements his sure-handedness out of the slot. Since joining Detroit in the offseason, Boldin has logged 3 receptions, 7 receiving yards and four touchdowns. He currently ranks th on the NFL s all-time receptions list with,4, and 5th on the NFL s all-time receiving yards list with 3,467. Most recently, in Week 7 Boldin caught an 8-yard game-winning touchdown pass from Stafford to seal the Lions come-from-behind victory over Washington. Boldin on what he brings to the table: For me, I think I ve always been reliable throughout my career. Always been tough, made those tough catches, not afraid to take a hit across the middle. Those are some of the things I bring to the team. Caldwell on the importance of WR Golden Tate s performance in light of offensive injuries: Golden is one of those guys that, with the ball in his hand he s pretty tough to handle. He can do it a number of different ways, and Jim Bob (Cooter) and those guys have been really creative in trying to make certain that he does touch it. Came up with a lot of big ones, even on the offside play, which is something they work on time and time again in that situation with a free play. We re glad we were able to get a big one out of it this time around. But Golden is obviously a big part of what we do. Caldwell on Roberts role and his catch on the final drive after a drop earlier in the game: Yeah, I think it was a very fine sort of a bounce-back catch. You know, oftentimes you don t get that opportunity and they were obviously similar, just in terms of direction. The ball was placed a little bit higher on the second one and he made an extra effort to go up and get it and control it. I think he s learning, he s developing, he s an integral part of what he do. You can see that we re lining up in four-wides maybe a little bit more than we ve done previously and that s because of the fact that we think he s certainly capable, you know, and he s been able to come along and he returns punts and kicks for us as well. Very important role that he plays.
