SAN JOSE STATE Eastern has faced San Jose State just once in the program s 31-year history, taking on the Spartans in Berkeley, Calif., during the 2009 season. The Eagles dropped the first set, 21-25, before winning the next three and the match. All four sets were close as both teams reached at least 20 points in each frame, with the third set needing extra points to decide a victor. LAST TIME VS. UC SANTA BARBARA This Friday s match marks the first time the Eagles and UC Santa Barbara will meet. Eastern is 17-20 all-time versus teams from the Big West Conference and lost its lone match to a BWC foe last season, falling to UC Riverside in three sets. LAST TIME VS. SAN DIEGO EWU has squared off with San Diego five times in the program s history, most recently in 2004. The two teams first met in 1986, and the Eagles won the first three encounters handily, limiting the Toreros to wins in just two sets. USD has won the two most recent meetings, however, sweeping Eastern in 1992 before winning in five sets in 2004. LAST TIME VS. USC Eastern has never faced USC prior to Saturday s tilt, but has already taken on two PAC-12 members this season. The Eagles fell to then-no. 8 Oregon in their season opener before losing in three to Washington State last weekend at the Cougar Challenge in Pullman, Wash. EWU is 19-46 all-time versus teams from the PAC-12, it s last win coming in 2011 in five sets over Washington State. LAST TIME OUT Eastern won two of its four matches last week, sweeping Seattle and defeating Big XII member Texas Tech in four sets. The Eagles took on Seattle last Monday, Sept. 2, winning in three hard-fought sets. EWU spent last weekend at the Cougar Challenge in Pullman, Wash., losing to host Washington State in three sets before falling to South Dakota in five sets. Eastern rebounded to win its final match of the weekend, upending the Red Raiders in convincing fashion, taking the final set, 25-11. SCHUMACHER NAMED BIG SKY PLAYER OF THE WEEK Sophomore outside hitter Allie Schumacher earned Big Sky Player of the Week honors for the second time in her career last week after leading Eastern to a pair of wins. She hit.330 (51-14-112) for the week, reaching double-digit kills in three of the Eagles four matches. She notched her first double-double of the young season against South Dakota, tallying a season-best 19 kills and 12 digs. She followed that up with a 16-kill, eight-dig performance in EWU s win over Texas Tech. The Puyallup native led Eastern with 51 kills and added 23 total digs and eight total blocks. NIEMEIER NAMED TO COUGAR CHALLENGE ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Senior setter Lindsay Niemeier had a stellar showing at the Cougar Challenge last weekend, racking up 83 assists and 25 digs in the Eagles three matches. She opened the weekend with 14 assists and eight digs versus host Washington State before tallying a season-high 35 assists against South Dakota. The Spokane native ended the weekend with her first double-double of the year, recording 34 assists and 10 digs to go along with four kills. 2013 ROSTER BY POSITION OUTSIDE HITTER (7) Kelsey Julian, Stanka Panic, Allie Schumacher, Sofija Ivanovic, Melissa Waelter, Kylie Curtis, Allison Doerpinghaus, Chloe Watson MIDDLE BLOCKER (3) Talia Fermantez, Ashley Wright, Kellen Barfield SETTER (4) Milica Nisavic, Lindsay Niemeier, Sophie Miller DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST (2) Ryann Ensrud, Emily Sarff 2013 ROSTER BY CLASS SENIORS (2) Lindsay Niemer, Ashley Wright JUNIORS (7) Kelsey Julian, Milica Nisavic, Talia Fermantez, Stanka Panic, Sofija Ivanovic, Melissa Waelter, Emily Sarff SOPHOMORES (4) Ryann Ensrud, Allie Schumacher, Kellen Barfield, Allison Doerpinghaus FRESHMEN (4) Sophie Miller, Kylie Curtis, Marley Taylor, Chloe Watson

DOERP IN THE HAUS Sophomore middle blocker Allison Doerpinghaus has gotten off to a tremendous start in her second season at Eastern, ranking third in the Big Sky and 63rd nationally in blocks per set with an average of 1.26. She has tallied at least five blocks in four of the Eagles seven matches this season after doing so just twice last year. She s also contributing offensively, ranking fifth on the team with an average of 1.13 kills per set while hitting.296 (26-10-54). She notched a season-best seven kills on 13 swings in EWU s win over Texas Tech last Saturday. AGE AIN T NOTHIN BUT A NUMBER Freshman outside hitter Kylie Curtis enjoyed a coming-out party last weekend at the Cougar Challenge, setting season highs in four different categories. She played in all five sets versus South Dakota, tallying eight kills on 17 attempts and adding a pair of digs. She exploded against Texas Tech on Saturday, recording 11 kills on 25 swings while committing no errors, good for a hitting percentage of.440. She added six digs and six block assists, both of which were season highs. EASTERN UPENDS RED RAIDERS EWU defeated Texas Tech in four sets last Saturday at the Cougar Challenge in Pullman, Wash. The victory marked only the second time that Eastern had defeated a Big XII team in the program s 31-year history. The Eagles were 1-9 against Big XII members prior to Saturday, their only win coming back in 1990 over Baylor. PLENTY OF KILLS TO GO AROUND Eastern saw three players notch double-digit kills in its win over Texas Tech last Saturday, marking the first time this season that three players have recorded at least 10 kills in the same match. Sophomore Allie Schumacher led the way with 16 kills while junior Melissa Waelter was not far behind, putting away 14 kills. Freshman Kylie Curtis went for a season-best 11 kills to complete the rare feat. TRIO OF DOUBLE-DOUBLES Three Eagles recorded double-doubles last weekend at the Cougar Challenge in Pullman, Wash. Sophomore Allie Schumacher got things underway with a 19-kill, 12-dig performance versus South Dakota. Senior Lindsay Niemeier and junior Melissa Waelter followed Schumacher s lead with double-doubles in Eastern s win over Texas Tech. Niemeier tallied 34 assists and 10 digs while Waelter notched 14 kills and a season-best 15 digs. WAELTER EARNS OREGON CLASSIC ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS Junior outside hitter Melissa Waelter was named to the Oregon Classic All-Tournament Team after leading the Eagles with 21 kills in their three matches. She opened the year with nine kills against then-no. 8 Oregon, adding four digs, before tallying four kills, two service aces, nine digs and two block assists versus Ohio. She had a team-best eight kills on 21 swings in Eastern s first win of the year over Bryant, contributing two service aces, five digs and a block assist. SHORT AND (SOMETIMES) SWEET Five of EWU s matches this season have lasted just three sets. The Eagles opened the year with consecutive three-set losses to then-no. 8 Oregon and Ohio before rebounding with back-to-back sweeps of Bryant and Seattle to even their record at 2-2. Eastern opened last weekend wth a three-set loss to host Washington State at the Cougar Challenge in Pullman, Wash. There have been 41 three-set matches in the Big Sky thus far. BLOCK PARTY The duo of junior Talia Fermantez and sophomore Allison Doerpinghaus has been quite the imposing force at the net this season for EWU. Doerpinghaus leads the team with 29 blocks, and Fermantez isn t far behind with 25 blocks. Both rank in the top 10 in the Big Sky in blocks per set, making Eastern just one of two teams with two players in the top 10. Doerpinghaus set a season high with seven blocks versus Texas Tech while Fermantez notched a season-best six blocks against Ohio. WRIGHT REACHES MILESTONE Senior Ashley Wright played in her 300th career set in the Eagles sweep of Bryant last weekend. She recorded nine kills on 11 swings in Eastern s win, appearing in all three sets off of the bench. Four matches into this season, Wright has 389 career kills, 242 career assists, 324 career digs and 149 career blocks. ENSRUD LEADS DEFENSE Appearing in a reserve role last season, sophomore libero Ryann Ensrud has made the most of her starting spot this season, leading the team with 84 digs through seven matches. Her average of 3.50 digs per set currently ranks ninth in the Big Sky. She opened the season with 15 digs versus then-no. 8 Oregon before tallying a season-best 16 digs in the Eagles sweep of Bryant last weekend. She recorded 14 digs versus Seattle, then registered 15 digs in Eastern s win over Texas Tech last weekend. EAGLES UNFAZED BY HIGHLY-RANKED DUCKS Facing the seemingly impossible task of taking not only a team ranked in the top 10 but the runner-up in last year s NCAA Championship, Eastern appeared unfazed by then-no. 8 Oregon, taking it to the Ducks for much of the match. Eastern held leads in all three sets versus Oregon, leading by as many as three in the first set and four in the third set, but was unable to sustain its advantages. EWU led by one, 16-15, in the first set before UO went on a 7-4 run to take a two-point lead it would not relinquish. The third set saw the Eagles race out to a 7-2 lead only to see Oregon claw back and tie things at 8-8. Eastern would go back up by four twice more, and eventually held a 22-21 lead late, but the Ducks squeaked out the victory despite three consecutive kills from the Eagles in potential match points for Oregon. In the fourth set, she suffered a knee injury that would sideline her for the season. During his first tenure at EWU, the Eagles advanced to the Big Sky Tournament s championship match each season, winning it twice and qualifying for the NCAA Championship. Twice named Big Sky Coach of the Yaer, Benson led Eastern to at least 20 wins in his final six seasons at the helm as the Eagles racked up three consecutive Big Sky Conference regular-season titles from 2002-04. EWU s 2001 squad defeated Oregon State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, becoming the only Big Sky team to ever advance out of the opening round, a mark which still stands today.

BENSON VS. 2013 OPPONENTS Head coach Wade Benson has winning records versus all but three of Eastern s 2013 opponents. Benson has a 1-1 mark against Northern Colorado, an 0-1 mark against San Diego and a 5-16 record against Sacramento State. Against Big Sky foes, Benson is 88-31 all-time for a winning percentage of.721. Benson has never lost to Montana in 15 matches while the Eagles have fallen to Idaho State just twice in 15 matches under his watch. He also has only three career losses against Montana State, Northern Arizona, Portland State and Weber State. EASTERN TABBED SIXTH IN BIG SKY PRESON COACHES POLL The Big Sky coaches have ranked EWU sixth in the preseason poll. three points behind fifth-place Northern Arizona and seven points clear of seventh-ranked Sacramento State. The Eagles were picked to finish third last season before finding themselves ninth after a down season uncharacteristic of Eastern s winning history. EWU welcomes back four starters and eight letter winners from last year s squad. Portland State is the preseason favorite after winning the Big Sky regular-season title last season. Idaho State is ranked second after losing in the Big Sky Tournament final. Northern Colorado rounds out the top three after winning the Big Sky Tournament in 2012. 2013 BIG SKY PRESON COACHES POLL TEAM (1ST) POINTS 1. Portland State (7) 95 2. Idaho State (2) 83 3. Montana 23 SENIORS TAKE THE LEAD When head coach Wade Benson was mulling over the idea of which players should captain this year s edition of the Eagles, it didn t take him long to decide. As the only two seniors on the team, Lindsay Niemeier and Ashley Wright were the two most-suited for the job. Both Lindsay and Ashley are the epitome of what type of person we want in this program Benson said. They do the right things both on and off the court. They ve been through ups and downs at Eastern and have persevered, making them ideal choices to lead this team. 2013 EWU RECORD...
