LSU FACES NATION S ELITE AT SEC INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS The LSU track and field teams are set to go up against many of the nation s premier squads this weekend as they travel to the Nutter Field House in Lexington, Ky., on Friday to compete in the SEC Indoor Championships. The Tigers are looking to improve upon their fourth-place finish in the event from a season ago, while the Lady Tigers enter the weekend as one of the favorites to compete for the conference championship as they finished the meet in seventh place in 2006. The competition at this year s meet is sure to be fierce as a total 35 women and 27 men enter the weekend ranked in the latest Trackwire Dandy Dozen in at least one specialty event. In addition, the men boast four of the nation s top 12 4x400-meter relay squads in this week s Dandy Dozen with the women following closely behind with three, and each side has one nationally-ranked foursome in the distance medley relay. The meet is slated to begin on Friday with the women s pentathlon and the first day of the men s heptathlon competition. Action continues Saturday and Sunday with the conclusion of the heptathlon and the open field and running events. Live results of the meet will be available online at www.ukathletics.com. LSU AT THE SEC INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS LSU has experienced tremendous success at the SEC Indoor Championships over the years. In 23 years of participation at the conference meet, the Lady Tigers have finished either first or second in the team standings 15 times and have finished lower than sixth place just one time when they finished seventh a year ago. The Lady Tigers have won a league-best 10 indoor conference titles, last claiming top honors during the 1999 season. On the men s side, the Tigers have finished in the top four as a team 33 times in 44 appearances at the indoor championships. LSU has won four SEC Indoor titles, but has not finished on top of the standings since the 1990 season. LAST YEAR AT THE SEC INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS LSU had four individuals and two relay squads win conference titles as the Tigers took fourth place and the Lady Tigers finished seventh at the 2006 SEC Indoor Championships at the O Connell Center in Gainesville, Fla. The teams swept the multi-event titles at the conference meet as Megan Akre took top honors in the women s pentathlon with 3,971 points and Edwin Billot captured the conference title in the men s heptathlon competition with a total of 5,504 points. Former LSU greats Kelly Willie and Xavier Carter finished atop the standings in the men s 200 meters and 400 meters, respectively, while both the men s and women s 4x400-meter relay teams continued their dominance over the competition by winning SEC titles in their respective heats. Willie clocked a time of 20.76 in the finals of the 200 meters with Carter crossing the finish line in a time of 46.58 in the final heat of the quarter mile. A pair of Tigers also earned all-conference honors at the meet with Willie taking second place in the 55-meter dash and freshman throws standout Ricky Jean-Francois finishing runner-up in the shot put.

Lett, who strengthened his position on the No. 3 spot on the school s all-time indoor performance list, posted back-to-back provisional qualifying with a 7.90 in the preliminary round and a team season-best 7.84 in the final heat. The Tigers also recorded a pair of wins in the middle distance and distance events as senior All-American Austin Benton captured the 400-meter title and junior Drew Haro took top honors in the men s mile. Junior Kate Accardo set the tone for the Lady Tigers in the distance events by running a 15-second personal best in the mile with a time of 5:15.89. On the women s side, sophomore Mallory Thompson won the pole vault title and freshman Kim Williams finished first in the weight throw. BAPTISTE PUNCHES HER TICKET TO NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS Junior All-American Kelly Baptiste has punched her ticket to the NCAA Indoor Championships after clocking automatic qualifying times in both the 60 and 200 meters at the Tyson Invitational at the Randal Tyson Track Center two weeks ago. Baptiste kicked off her weekend by taking second place in the short sprint with a blistering time of 7.25 in the event finals during the invitational portion of the meet on Friday night. All-American Courtney Champion of Tennessee nipped Baptiste at the tape with the nation s top time and the No. 7 time in the world this year with a personal best of 7.21 seconds. Baptiste followed her stellar performance on the first day of competition by qualifying automatically for the NCAA Championships in the 200 meters on Saturday with yet another season-best time of 23.30 clocked in both the preliminary and final rounds of the event. RODRIGUE BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD IN POLE VAULT Freshman Katelyn Rodrigue kicked off her LSU career with a bang by breaking the indoor school record in the women s pole vault by clearing 11-11 3/4 in the Lady Tigers season opener at the Purple Tiger Classic on Jan. 13. Rodrigue broke her own school record the following week with a vault of 12-5 1/2 to take top honors in the event with an indoor personal best at the Modrall Sperling Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., on Jan. 20. She accomplished that feat for the third time this season by clearing a height of 12-6 3/4 at the Tyson Invitational two weeks ago. The New Orleans native is well on her way to becoming the most prolific pole vaulter in the history of the LSU women s track and field program as she is the only Lady Tiger in program history to clear 12 feet in the event. In fact, she has cleared the 12-foot plateau in each of the last four meets she has appeared. WOMEN S 4X400 RELAY QUALIFIES FOR NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS The Lady Tigers 4x400-meter relay squad, which was ranked No. 1 in the country heading into the New Balance Collegiate Invitational two weeks ago, will look to defend its national title as it qualified automatically for the NCAA Indoor Championships by clocking a season-best time of 3:31.77 to finish runner-up to then-no. 3 South Carolina at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York. The foursome of junior quater mile standouts Brooklynn Morris and Deonna Lawrence, freshman LaTavia Thomas and sophomore Nickiesha Wilson teamed for the fifth-fastest time in program history. The Lady Tigers are the defending national champions in the event as they claimed national crowns during both the indoor and outdoor seasons a year ago. Their time of 3:29.33 set at the NCAA Indoor Championships is the No. 2 time on the school s all-time list. OHANAJA CLOCKS AUTOMATIC QUALIFYING TIME IN HURDLES Junior Jessica Ohanaja became the first LSU athlete this season to post an NCAA automatic qualifying mark or time with a personal best 8.14 in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles to take top honors in the event at the Bayou Bengal Invitational on Jan. 26. Ohanaja s time places her in sixth on the program s all-time indoor performance list. She has followed her performance at the Bayou Bengal Invitational by equaling her personal best on two other occasions, at the 100th Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden on Feb. 2 and in the finals of the event at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory Track and Field Center on Feb. 3. DARDAR BLAZES IN 400 METERS AT NEW BALANCE INVITATIONAL Junior All-American Reggie Dardar proved why he is considered one of the nation s elite 400-meter runners as he clocked the second-fastest time in the world at the time in the finals of the event at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational on Feb. 3. Dardar had not competed in the quarter mile prior to the New Balance meet, but shattered his previous best indoor time by more than a second with a runner-up effort of 46.24, which ranks No. 6 on the school s all-time indoor performance list. Ricardo Chambers of Florida State - a two-time All-American in the 400 meters during the 2006 campaign - wowed a lively crowd at the Armory Track and Field Center by nipping Dardar at the tape with the then No. 1 time in the world this season at 46.23 to claim the event championship. DARDAR EARNS SEC HONOR FOR STELLAR PERFORMANCE After clocking the second-fastest 400-meter time in the world on Saturday, junior quartermiler Reggie Dardar earned his first career SEC Men s Track Athlete of the Week honor as announced by the league office on Feb. 6. Dardar ran a personal best time of 46.24 to take second place in the 400 meters at the prestigious New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York. The Cecilia, La., native also anchored the men s second-ranked 4x400-meter relay team to a win over the third-ranked foursome from South Carolina with a 46.70 split on the last leg. The Tigers clocked a provisional qualifying time of 3:07.54 to take first place in the event. LSU ATHLETES COMPETE AT 100TH MILLROSE GAMES The LSU men s and women s track and field teams were well-represented with sevent athletes receiving invitations to compete at the recent 100th Millrose Games held at Madison Square Garden on Feb. 2. Junior Jessica Ohanaja, sophomore Nickiesha Wilson and senior Angel Boyd finished 1-2-3 in the college division of the 60-meter hurdles with Ohanaja clocking a winning time of 8.14. Fellow junior Kelly Baptiste took first place in the college division of the women s 60-meter dash followed by junior Brooklynn Morris in fourth place. The men were represented by junior All-American Richard Thompson, who finished fourth in the professional division. Junior Ryan Fontenot represented LSU in the college division of the men s 60-meter hurdles. The Millrose Games is the nation s oldest and most prestigious indoor invitational dating back to 1908 and has featured the likes of track and field greats Jesse Owens, Wilma Rudolph and Carl Lewis. Thompson s altitude-adjusted time of 6.67 is the second-fastest time in program history and is just a split-second behind former LSU great Kelly Willie s school-record mark of 6.66 set in the preliminaries of the event at the NCAA Indoor Championships a season ago. In clocking his personal best 60-meter time, Thompson passed former LSU football stars Devery Henderson and Chris Cummings on the school s all-time indoor performance list. In addition to his stellar performance in the 60 meters, Thompson also took fourth place in the men s 200 meters at the Lobo Invitational with an indoor personal best time of 21.30 seconds, which was the 10th-ranked mark on the school s all-time list at the time of his performance. LSU S JUMPS CORPS POSTS NCAA PROVISIONAL MARKS The LSU track and field teams are well-known for their rich history in the sprints and hurdles, but they also boast one of the nation s most prolific traditions in their jumps corps. Coach Boo Schexnayder is grooming LSU s next generation of horizontal jumpers as sophomore all-conference performer Jeremy Hicks and true freshman Will Coppage have already posted NCAA provisional qualifying marks this season. Coppage became the first Tiger to long jump more than 25 feet this season after posting a personal best mark of 25-2 3/4 to take fifth place in the event at the Tyson Invitational on Friday. Hicks also posted a season best mark of 24-10 1/2 at the Tyson Invitational to improve upon his NCAA provisional distance of 24-9 1/4 set at the Lobo Invitational. On the women s side, junior Kathy Coleman leads the Lady Tigers effort as she has qualified provisionally for the NCAA Indoor Championships after jumping 20-8 1/2 at the Bayou Bengal Invitational on Jan. 26. DAVIDSON POSTS PROVISIONAL MARK IN PENTATHLON WIN LSU senior Shaunette Davidson won the women s pentathlon crown at the LSU Combined Events on Jan. 25 as she scored an NCAA provisional qualifying total of 3,705 points in her first appearance in the event as a Lady Tiger. Davidson outlasted runner-up Amy Seward of Miami for the title, who entered the competition as the nation s 11th-ranked pentathlete in the Trackwire Dandy Dozen.
