THE inside pitch JD s Jaguars: Mom & Cats Photos By: Greg Wagner Gary Dover and his signature Jaguars jersey in honor of his Mom. BY GLENN MILLER Roy Hobbs Baseball Roy Hobbs World Series teams sport all sorts of names. They sound like bigleague teams Livingston Dodgers and Long Island Yankees, for example. Some may be whimsical, such as the Orlando Wrinkle or Stay Thirsty My Friends. But one name in the Classics Division this week has profound significance. The name of the JD s Jaguars has special meaning for Manager Gary Dover, a Roy Hobbs Hall of Famer. The team is named for his late mother Jo Dover. Hence the JD. The Jaguars part came because his mother loved cats. I really wanted to do something for the most important person in my life, who is my hero, Dover said. Dover comes from a family of 9 children. That is a huge load to handle, said Dover, a CPA who has four brothers and four sisters. Jo Dover handled it. My mother always seemed to be able to juggle all that and give us what we needed, and she was somebody I always see JAGUARS on page 2 2018 WEEK 4 CLASSICS / TIMELESS NOV. 14 th Thursday schedule To be announced Wednesday evening Matchups and game schedules for Thursday s games will be announced Wednesday evening no later than 7 p.m. Schedules will be posted on royhobbs.com and posted at the Player Development Complex headquarters. ALL TEAMS will play Thursday, with one exception: With 45 teams in 60s division, one team will get a bye through Thursday s game right into a playoff bracket. Generally, it is the 1-3 team that has given up the most runs. All playoff divisions will be single elimination, and playoffs begin Friday. Playoff brackets and pairings will be announced Thursday evening at the Classics-Timeless Players Pairings Party at PDC Lanai, hosted by Sidelines Sports Grill and Roy Hobbs Baseball. The Party will start at 6 p.m. PDC will be open for business as usual Wednesday and Thursday, including time for players to pick up T-shirts from noon to 5:30 p.m., etc. Tom Giffen

2 JAGUARS continued from page 1 looked to as an example, said Dover, who was the fifth of 9. Someone I wanted to emulate. Jo Dover died at the age of 77 in 2000, only about 90 days after her husband of 53 years, Dick, had died. Now, nearly two decades later, Gary Dover is still trying to emulate his mom. She wasn t an educated person, Dover said. But she was one of the smartest people that I knew. She always seemed to get right to the heart of a matter and be able to look at a situation and be able to give you good advice. I went to her on many occasions. She was gifted, obviously, not only as a mother but she could do just about anything that my brothers and sisters needed. She found a way to get it done. My mother was a perfectionist. Dover has inherited that trait. He recalls going to her house and mowing the lawn and making sure the lines were straight. Late in his parents life, he and his wife, Roxane, would go to their house to take care of chores such as painting. One moment stands out for Dover from when he was 45. He recalls his mother observing him as he worked. I said, Mom, what are you doing? Dover said. She said, I just like watching a good man work. Jo Dover would be proud of her son, Gary, a good man. 6 Massachusetts Chiefs batter knocks one into right field vs. the Long Island Yankees Photo By: Greg Wagner continued from page 2 NOTEBOOK Playoff pitching guidelines Roy Hobbs requirement is that all pitchers who will be starters or closers in save situations (3-run or less difference in the 8 th and 9 th innings) qualify for the playoffs by pitching at least 2 innings 6 outs or 10 hitters during pool play. AAAA qualifier teams may not add pitchers to their lineup after Pool Play concludes; however, Open Division teams may have pitchers arrive Wednesday those pitchers much throw 5 innings or 25 hitters to qualify for the playoffs. Finally, in the playoffs, those non-qualified middle-inning pitchers will come to the mound from their normal defensive positions where they started the game. That is as important as the spirit of the rule that these non-qualified pitchers who are used as inning-eaters are players who ordinarily are playing other positions. And, please remember that any players leaving the RHWS today (Monday) to return on Thursday MUST turn in their player ID Card and re-register upon their return. They must return before the quarterfinals of the playoffs, regardless of division. Managers should email a list of their qualified pitchers to Roy Hobbs in case of rg@royhobbs.com by 7 p.m. the night before their playoffs begin.

8 30 YEAR MEMORIES Welcome to the 30 th renewal of the Roy Hobbs World Series. As the Hobbs internal family talked about what to do to make #30 special, we decided to ask participants after all you are the ones who make the Roy Hobbs World Series special why it is special to them. We received many, many comments and stories, thank you. Please enjoy 30 30 30 30 Tim McGoldrick, Umpire: One of my first years as an Umpire for the RHWS, I was working the plate at Hammond Stadium. It was a back and forth exciting game, and I really focused on being at my best. The new batter came to the plate with his team down by 2 runs late in the game. The batter politely asked me to please use the cleanest ball that I had left, as the current supply of balls were getting pretty dirty. I put the best ball that I had left in per his request. He hit the first pitch way over the fence, giving his team the lead. After he reached home plate and respectfully thanked me for the cleanest ball, I just smiled. I was proud to be treated by a player with respect and his Thank you, to me. By the way, it was former Rookie-of-the-Year in the American League, Ron Leflore. Bob Misko, Orlando Wrinkles: Recently, I watched my 9-year grandson play baseball. Watching the competitiveness, pure joy in his eyes and his true love for the game, it all became clear to me. I realized how much I matured between those lines. The drive to do your best, support your team and learn the rules applied to the game, my 26 years in the Navy and life in general. I feel pride as men of all ages stand for the anthem and support each other, even in the heat of the competition. I come to feel again the challenge to do my best and meet the challenges on the field regardless of what side of the field I am playing. I come to feel the rush as you step up to the plate, on the mound, or lift your glove to catch a sharply hit ball. Roy Hobbs is one of the great equalizers as Blue Collar and White-Collar men are all equal when they put on the uniform and walk out onto the field. I come share the respect with my peers. For the Game, for the Flag and the privilege we share to play ball. Michael Saffelle, Boston Goodfellas: It is wonderful to be with the guys out of town to see how we stack up against the competition. To us there is nothing better than playing baseball, and for one week we get to be kids again and our whole week is baseball. It is for sure the best vacation of the year. Lonnie Samples, Dupage Indians: I attended the RHWS the first year it was in Ft. Myers in 1993. I didn t come to play, just to fish and party with my brother who came to play for the Transit Braves. I took some B/P and infield at their practice and the coach tossed me a jersey and said go sign up. The hook was set, and I haven t missed a year since. Hobbs got me back into baseball at 42 and it has truly added to my enjoyment of life. Tom Giffen runs a great tournament with the caring of a family owned business, and although he can be rough as an old corn cobb, he clearly seems to care about putting on a top-quality event that all his players will enjoy, and that will keep me and my teams coming back as long as I am able. Bill Scafidi, Boston Goodfellas: I always think of my first RHWS in 1995 because that is what got me back into baseball at the age of 41. I was amazed at the level of competition, the venues and how organized the event was. It has gotten bigger and better since then. The RHWS has become as much a part of my life as Christmas or any other annual event. Paul Williams, Baltimore Baseball Club: My first trip to the RHWS was in 2003 with the Baltimore Baseball Club in the Masters Division. Some of our players had gone to Hobbs the previous year but this was the first time we participated in Hobbs with our full squad. Everyone enjoyed playing on the beautiful fields that were all in close proximity, so we traveled less compared to other tournaments leaving more time to enjoy the Fort Myers area, including the beach. George Blackwell, Minnesota Saints: Just being around a bunch of guys who truly love and have a passion for the game of baseball, Baseball is the greatest game in the world and having the opportunity to spend 1 week playing this great game is priceless. Great event! Great people running it! And above all Great teammates! Paul Doucette, Silver Foxes of Rhode Island: All rolled in to one great memory... All the full speed, diving, rolling and jumping catches I have made playing Center and Left Field!
