Diving in the Azores Lying in the middle of the Atlan5c Ocean, more than 1000 km west of Portugal, the Azores comprise an archipelago of nine islands. They represent the emerging peaks of a huge submarine mountain chain known as the 'Mid-Atlan5c Ridge' that divides the en5re length of the ocean from North to South. Bathed in the warm waters of the Gulf Stream the islands unique landscape, nature and rich marine life are 5ghtly connected to their origin and geographic loca5on. For all those seeking close encounters with whales, swims with dolphins, great adventures, scuba diving and fun snorkelling the incredibly abundant marine life will not disappoint. The Azores is a new fron5er for recrea5onal scuba divers. The Gulf Stream and varied seafloor topography create ideal condi5ons for a rich, abundant and diverse underwater fauna that spans 5ny invertebrates to huge pelagic fish and marine mammals. The more adventurous can venture offshore to dive Princess Alice with mobulas and mantas or in blue water with elusive Blue and Mako sharks. Located at 45 nau5cal miles southwest of Pico the Princess Alice Bank is a seamount that stands out for its biodiversity but more especially for the unique opportunity to encounter large groups of friendly mantas and mobulas.
Diving with sharks Minimum cer5fica5on: PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (or equivalent) Seasonality: From 20th July to 31st October Water temperature: 22-24 C Visibility: 20-30 metres Success rate: 90% (Blue shark), 30% (Mako) The Blue and the Mako shark are found offshore. Reaching the dive spots takes about 1 hour to navigate and the dives occur in deep water, far from coastal recrea5onal ac5vi5es. To undertake these 'blue water dives' requires excellent buoyancy control as there are no points of reference from the sea floor or a wall. Divers must therefore pay aden5on to their depth, orienta5on and dive profile. All par5cipants are required to first undertake a check dive prior to going out on this dive. Prior to each trip all divers are briefed on how to conduct themselves in the water, as well as how to recognise poten5ally dangerous behaviour from the sharks. Diving with sharks is a fantas5c experience, but extreme care is essen5al. In order to avoid any nega5ve impact on the sharks, divers are required to follow the dive centre staff instruc5ons closely. Touching and feeding the sharks are strictly forbidden. Chumming techniques that keep the amount of food, blood and oil in the water at a minimum are used. Should the behaviour of the sharks or divers warrant it, each dive may be terminated at the divemaster's discre5on.
