April/May 2018 Yellowstone Square Dance Council Grapevine 3 Kut N Capers Steve Lassiter, Caller Fridays, 7:00 p.m. Episcopal Church Cody, WY Thank you to Bob Hogemark for coming to call in Cody on March 9. We are sorry to announce that there will be no summer square dance in Clark this year. Too bad. Meanwhile, Steve is back in town and we are dancing at his place on Tuesday evenings to brush up for the Cody Spring Dance to be held April 13 14. We are hoping to dance intermittently through the summer, since our caller is here then, even though he has commitments with summer tourists at dude ranches and other venues. We very much look forward to seeing and visiting with friends from Montana and other places mid-april as we welcome warmer weather and better driving conditions. April/May 2018 Yellowstone Square Dance Council Grapevine 5 Contradance Billings Amy Letson, caller, with live musicians 7:30 p.m., at MetraPark 2nd and 4th Fridays most months, see calendar Bob Hogemark, Caller Thursday evenings 6:30-8:30 Mainstream, Metra Park The last three contradances of the season will provide plenty of variety at both the caller s microphone and in the music. April 13 will bring back Copper Kelly and their Celtic-flavored tunes, with Amy Letson calling the dances. On April 27, well-loved Missoula caller Bev Young will be at the mic with her impeccable teaching and relaxed calling style. She will be joined by Chordwood Cricket, with Chelsea on fiddle and Steve Marty on guitar, playing their unique and spirited blend of traditional, contemporary and original dance music. Our final dance, on May 4, will feature a fantastic old-time string band from Helena Balled in Burlap with Aaron Parrett on fiddle and Mark Matthews calling. There has been some talk about, and wishing aloud for summer dances. It certainly is a long time between May and September. Though nothing has been set up as yet, any information will be available on our Facebook page, and emails will be sent (if you wish to be on our email list, contact contradancebillings@gmail.com.) Initial contact has been made with Kristy Drake of Billings TrailNet regarding a joint event possibly a contradance on a trail, details to be determined. We re excited at the possibility of such a collaboration. Bear Hug is a contradance and music weekend put on by the Missoula Folklore Society at the Flathead Lake United Methodist Camp near Rollins, MT. This year s festivities will be September 7 9. Brochures with registration forms will be available at our dances now through May, or look on their website www.missoulafolk.org. Contradance Billings is looking for people to help plan the future of the dance, as well as more callers, bands, and audio engineers. Anyone interested can either email contradancebillings@gmail.com or call Amy Letson 254-2773. 2018 Dance Schedule Apr 13 Apr 27 May 4 Billings Plus Group Bob Hogemark, Lynn Strobel, callers 7:00-9:30 p.m., at MetraPark Saturdays, see website or newsletter calendar for dates It s hard to believe the dance season is coming to an end! It was quite the season. On the plus side (pun intended) we gained some wonderful new Plus dancers who breezed through the program and are noticeably increasing their skill each time we dance. The negative side was the weather and treacherous road conditions which led to a number of cancelled dances over the winter. But we Thank you thank you THANK YOU to everyone who attended our Spring Dance on St. Patrick s Day. An even bigger thank you to Peggy and Brian for all their hard work getting this fun and wonderfully awesome event organized. Thanks also go out to Terry and Kathy Drange who helped Brian and Peggy change out the decorations from Valentine s to St. Patrick s Day and Spring at. They made the event so much fun! We must also thank our caller, Lynn Strobel (and his lovely wife, Judy), and our cuer, Larry Sperry. We certainly appreciate the continued support of our Spring Dance. Lynn provided some fun and challenging movements that were new to most of us: Broken Wheel, Ping to a Line and Clover Flow. It is always great to see a floor full of round dancers. Who knows our new square dancers may give it a try! It was exciting to see interest from our new dancers to attend the evening dance. Lynn graciously called three tips to their dance level. They did awesome and got to experience their first open dance. Our plans for our New Dancer Hoedown on April 26th are underway. Our current plan includes providing pizza at 6:00 pm. Then, the dance will begin at 6:30 pm., followed by ice cream after the dance. We welcome all dancers of all levels to join in celebrating our new dancers. Final reminder about the ladies square dance apparel on the rack in the ladies restroom for those dancers just beginning to acquire the skirts and dresses and those who already have a collection. Before the end of the season the remaining items will be removed as Metra takes over the building about mid-may. Hunter Keller has agreed to call for us during the summer, hopefully one time each month. Now, the challenge is finding an affordable location. If you are aware of a facility, church, etc. that is available and reasonably priced, please let us know. It will really help our new dancers with continuity while waiting for the dancing to begin again this fall. As it can get hot in Billings in the summer, it would be nice if the facility had air conditioning. Brian, Peggy, Paul & Eileen would rather have our callers and dancers be safe. Without you we wouldn t have a program and all the fun that goes with it. Thank you to Bob, Lynn and Judy, all our dancers near and far, and all the cooks, bakers and cleanup helpers who kept us well fed and cared for all season. See you in the fall, and at the summer events as well!
