LETTERS FROM LISA It s been twenty years since I was surrounded by my collegiate track team, performing one of the fastest final sprints of my life. I was defending my national 400 meter dash outdoor title during the spring of 1996. By the tears staining my cheeks, just an hour before the championship race, you would never have guessed I had just been named 16-time All American in just two short seasons, a feat no other had accomplished. The black cloud of self doubt, a deep desire to win, and a fear of what would happen if I didn t, surrounded my thinking. I had cooked up a pressure so great, I could not see straight. The gunman ordered us to take our mark and then into our set position. Like a flash of thunder everything black turned into light. My cross fell forward off my neck and hit my chin, knocking away every negative thought. In a split second, I remembered who truly surrounded me: coaches who prepared me well for this race, teammates who would love me regardless of the results, and our God who always gives me the strength to run my race with confidence and power. I had nothing to fear! The sound of the gun pierced the sky, and the runners were off. I pulled out of the blocks faster than ever. I sprinted the corners and soared through the straightaways. Crossing the finish line, neck and neck with the runner on my right, I leaned hard, not knowing the result, until they called my name last, to take the first place podium. I was a champion once again, and posted a time that would not be broken for ten years. We all have our races. We will be in one this Christmas season, sprinting in one way or another, dashing from grocery store to clothing store, trying to make the holidays perfect. I would be amiss to not encourage us to consider, not the what of a reward, but the who we are running for. For ourselves, our team, our family or our Lord? LIKE A FLASH OF THUNDER EVERYTHING BLACK TURNED INTO LIGHT We all have a journey, a race, and the apostle said it well in the Call to Endurance in Hebrews 12:1-2, Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that lay before Him endured a cross and despised the shame and has sat down at the right hand of God s throne. We are given an example of what a good runner s life looks like. The encouragement wasn t to win or to be in the top three. Our encouragement is to run our race well, and focus not on the goal, but on Jesus and realize we have people who surround us, and are watching us. If we choose not to give any power to the things of 3

LISA (CONT.) this world, to lay them down, and keep our eyes focused on the One who is our fuel and the source of our life on this journey, we won t just find victory, we will find a deep and profound joy along the way. We will make a difference and be the example others need. No matter how hard, how long, or where it takes you, run your race well, and be the flame to those who surround you. I m so thankful for all our families, athletes, coaches and colleagues who have supported me, and walked on this journey with the Blaze and Enspire365. You surround me with joy. You motivate me, inspire me and make this life one worth running. GEAR UP Our Wisconsin Blaze and Enspire365 online store is open. NEWS FROM WISCONSIN BLAZE BOYS BASKETBALL I'm Charles L. Butler, the new Wisconsin Blaze Director of Boys Basketball. I have coached youth sports for more than eight years with Pop Warner, the Papermaker Gridiron Association in Kimberly and the Kimberly Area Youth Basketball Club. Currently, I coach the Wisconsin Blaze 13U boys basketball team along with Matt Schuller, of Freedom. This will be my second year with the organization. I'm excited about the opportunity to lead the boys program as we have a very bright future ahead of us. We are building a team of coaches and staff that will do everything in our power to put your athlete in a position to reach his basketball and life goals. Our coaches are passionate about your son growing as a person and basketball player. No other program will care about the development of your athlete like the Wisconsin Blaze. "Training Champions for Life" is not just our motto, it's our mission. We will continue to find opportunities to teach life lessons through the game of basketball. We want to develop great athletes who go on to become world class citizens in the community. The young men in our program will become the future leaders in business, education, government and various other areas of society as we partner with you, the parent, to develop well rounded young men. I'm looking forward to working with you and your son this upcoming AAU season and beyond. If you have questions, do not hesitate to contact me by email at charles@enspire365.com. If you see me around the facility or at a tournament, please introduce yourself. It's going to be a great season! Sincerely, Charles L. Butler, Jr. 13U Boys Basketball Head Coach Wisconsin Blaze Director of Boys Basketball Proverbs 12:24 WELCOME TO THE WISCONSIN BLAZE FAMILY! ATHLETES OF THE MONTH BEYOND THE STATS In spring of 2014, Tina Ubl (2018) strutted onto our court at the Saint Matthew Lutheran gym where the Wisconsin Blaze organization used to train. Confident. Corny. Silly. Strong. But most of all Captivating. Because of her prowess, athleticism, speed and phenomenal basketball skills, Tina has been a highly sought out athlete. Every coach and AAU organization wants a Tina on their team, and now many colleges are seeking her out. TINA UBL #24 It s not unusual for Tina to average 18 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 6 steals per game. But what truly is amazing about Tina is that she plays beyond the stats. What captures everyone s attention isn t her game, but her relentless pursuit of perfection. Tina is the athlete who pushes the boundaries. She s the athlete who uses her quickness and drive to blast the passing lane just at the right time for steals. She s the athlete who battles her opponent for every ball, sprawling for anything within reach, bruising every bone. She finishes with three pointers that touch the hand of God before they fill the bottom of the net. Tina Ubl (5 10 ) can be found helping her team create the unthinkable at Shiocton High School this winter and competing with her amateur team at Wisconsin Blaze this spring and summer. Take in a game, and be captivated by Tina Ubl, a junior guard, who plays beyond the stats. ABOVE THE CROWD In a sea of great basketball athletes, last season, Jeremiah Flowers (2019) stood out above the crowd literally. Jeremiah Flowers a Green Bay native, came into the Blaze under the wings of Coach Steven Baker, and finished off the year with wings of his own. JEREMIAH FLOWERS #2 Jeremiah was never at a disadvantage last year standing only 5 8, because he used his athletic ability and work ethic to compete with the fastest and strongest in every game. Jeremiah soared above the rim with a 40 vertical and used his athleticism and speed to steal passes, rack up fast break points, and streak down the lanes unnoticed. He competed for every loose ball and ripped rebounds like it was his last. After every tournament, it wasn t a surprise to hear parents say, Wow, you should have seen Jeremiah today! Jeremiah led the team in more ways than one. Making the best of his limited support system, he would make it to practices an hour early to lift weights, never ask for much, and was as humble and thankful for any extra kindness shown to him on travel weekends. Don t miss Jeremiah soar above the crowds as he helps his Green Bay East Red Devils this season. We look forward to seeing him back this spring as a Wisconsin Blaze athlete. 8

WISCONSIN BLAZE VOLLEYBALL News from the Director: It s the most wonderful time of the year! Volleyball season, that is. Every year on the first day of the season, I find myself humming along to that iconic tune, and the tradition remains true this year. And how wonderful it truly is. This club season, Wisconsin Blaze welcomes seven teams, over 80 girls and seven new coaches. Whoa! Talk about reasons to celebrate! Teams are already hard at work in the gym, prepping for their first tournaments in January. In 2017, tournaments will take our teams from Fond du Lac to Green Bay, and everywhere in between, culminating (for most everyone) in Milwaukee for the Badger Region Championship. There s much to look forward to over the next three months.
