WV Shooting & Hunting News Official Publication of the West Virginia State Rifle and Pistol Association October 2018 Friends of NRA NRA Field Representative James Kilgore, NRA Senior Field Representative retired as of July 31, 2018. His replacement for West Virginia, Western Virginia and Western Maryland is Michael L. Swackhamer. Mike was kind enough to send me his biography to include in the newsletter as follows: My name is Michael L. Swackhamer and I recently accepted the field representative s position for Area 07 and have big shoes to fill from James Kilgore. I and my wife Kathy are born and raised Michigan fans but we are excited to be part of the NRA family and will be living in West Virginia and riding the mountains on our Harley Davidson Electra Glide. We have traveled west and now have headed east. I have been chairman of MI-1, Cheboygan Friends of NRA for nine years and with their help continuously raised our net income every year and hope to make Protector Club this year which will be a first for us. I like to hunt upland birds and deer hunt. I have passed up on far more deer than I have taken as I am after that wall hanger we all dream about. One of my other hobbies is collecting and shooting guns of all types and sizes. Pictured is the biggest piece of arsenal I had the honor of pulling the cord on. I am a long time volunteer helping run the National Matches and a couple years ago was chosen as one of the few civilians to fire the 70mm cannon with a barrel stamp of 1917, for morning colors. I wore my custom made ear plugs with ear muffs and still jumped when I heard the roar of the cannon. I was told by the soldiers loading her up for me that the sound carries for miles. Again Kathy and I are excited to be part of the greatest organization in the world, our National Rifle Association. We can t wait to meet you all. Mike and his Electra Glide The 70mm Cannon Contact Information: Michael Swackhamer PO. Box 432 Fayetteville, WV 25840 mswackhamer@nrahq.org 681-823-5013 (work) Editors Note: Michael just signed-up for a 3 years WVSRPA Membership. Thank you Mike!

West Virginia Shooting and Hunting News October 2018 -- Page 2 2018 National Precision Pistol Championships, Camp Perry, OH West Virginia Pistol Team at Camp Perry Fifteen members of the West Virginia Pistol Team traveled to Camp Perry, Ohio to participate in the National Pistol Championships in July, 2018. We fielded an out-ofcompetition team in the CMP National Trophy Team Match. We had two expert teams and one sharpshooter team in the NRA matches. The expert gold team placed second in their class in both the centerfire and.45 team matches and third overall. Individual shooters who received awards or placed well in at least one event in their class are listed below. Support for the team was provided by the West Virginia State Rifle and Pistol Association, Brassmasters, and the Putnam County Pistol Shooters. WV Pistol Team Members Lee Godbey Harry Reeves Revolver Match Award Vern and Henry entertaining the WV Picnic attendees It has been thirty two years since Ed Williams electrified West Virginia bullseye pistol shooters by winning the National Trophy Match at Camp Perry, Ohio. Ed Won the Anheuser Busch Trophy, too, for having fired the best aggregate in the National Trophy Match and the National Trophy Team match. Ed went on to win the Anheuser Busch Trophy two more times, more than any other shooter. However, it had been sixty years since a West Virginian had won an individual match in the National Pistol Championship aggregate. In a whistling wind, Lt. James Ray Evans, now of Scott Depot, fired a 94 and a 97 with his K-38 revolver to put together a 191 match total to win the Center Fire Slow Fire Match in 1958. Fast forward to 2018. Vern Reichenbecher, of Huntington, won the.45 Caliber Slow Fire Match with a 195 total that bested the efforts of five hundred thirty other competitors. Then Jason Hedrick, a Marine Reservist from Williamsburg, West Virginia, shot a 200 with 14 Xs to win the.45 Caliber Timed Fire Match. Our West Virginia Gold team won second place in the Expert State Association category in the.45 Caliber Team match, and was third in the Team Championship.. The Gold Team was comprised of Reichenbecher, Mark Bentley of Barboursville, William Murphy of Looneyville, and Tom Allen of Dunbar. All in all, it was a great year for our West Virginia Pistol Shooters at Camp Perry this year.

Jonathan competed in the the 2018 NRA World Shooting Championship, held at the Peacemaker National Training Center in Glengary, WV on Thursday, Friday and Saturday before this event and then arrived at Brassmasters Range at approximately 3:30a.m. Sunday morning. West Virginia Shooting and Hunting News October 2018 -- Page 5 National Hunting and Fishing Days Taylor McClain preparing to fire a shot The State s celebration of National Hunting & Fishing Days took place at Stonewall Resort on September 22 nd & 23 rd. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is the host for this annual event and, once again, those fine people ensured a successful, satisfying weekend for many families from around the State. If you ve never attended, make plans for doing so next September it s a great experience for young people. Your Association, as is customary, was represented at the event providing information about the WVSRPA and offering Association merchandise and this year s raffle tickets for sale. As reported in the June Newsletter, we are again raffling an M1 Garand from the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), as well as a Henry Golden Boy, Silver Rifle.22LR, donated by Henry Rifle through the NRA. Saturday was bright and sunny and we provided information pamphlets and spoke with many people. Raffle sales were brisk and merchandise sales were encouraging. That was a good thing because Sunday the rains returned and visitors to our booth were spotty throughout the day. All things considered, however, our annual visit to this national event is one we need to continue it is one of the premier events throughout the State where the WVSRPA can expand its presence. WVJMP 2018 CMP Nationals 3 time WV State Precision Pistol Champion Mark Bentley with the Mountaineer Trophy Vern Reichenbecher s Medals, Silver Plate, Pins and Plaque from the WV State Precision Pistol Match The juniors first want to thank the WVSR&P Association for providing the registration funds for the team to attend the 2018 CMP Nationals. Our young team enjoyed a great week of shooting and learned much from the instruction and opportunity to participate in a national match. We took seven juniors, four coaches, and our supportive parents to this weeklong event. Our team has become a family affair with highly involved parents who support the program. Following is our recap of the week. Day One: Five juniors and four coaches/parents were enrolled in the SAFS. We feel it is important for the coaches and parents to experience the learning and obstacles their junior experiences. Our small gang did pretty good! Karee Hutson earned her first CMP distinguished points by shooting 382-10 for 15 th place in the M16 EIC Match. Joey Hitt missed the cutoff by a heartbreaking one spot at 36 th place with a 376-6. Brooklyn Flint began her rookie year strong with 365-2 for 76 th place. Two of the remaining juniors placed in the top 100. One of our parents also shot his way into the top 100. Also on the first day, the coaches decided to double up on matches and register the juniors for the Oliver Perry Match. This match proved to be important in obtaining decent zeros for the subsequent matches. Day Two: The President s 100 gave confirmation of getting zeros the previous day! Five of the juniors were in the top 100 of junior competitors with the remaining two not far out. Sam Sheppard (268-4) was 62 nd and Rylee Hitt (261-6) was 80 th. Day Three: The National Individual Matches for the Daniel Boone Trophy was the first long match of the week.

West Virginia Shooting and Hunting News October 2018 -- Page 6 Several of the juniors shot a score of 98 in various positions, but the 600 yd. line proved to be a challenge on this day. Day Four: The juniors moved into team matches with the first being the Junior Team Match. Everyone was able to participate in this match! WVJMP was able to field three in competition teams. WV Blue was our top team with 905-10. WV Gold was 883-8 and WV Green was 809-7. One of our juniors, Mariah Flint, shot in an out of competition junior team with a PA junior and that team was first in the out of competition teams. Day Five: The National Trophy Team Match for the Minuteman Trophy was a decent day for the juniors. The WVJMP ended a respectable 11 th place with a score of 2660-38. Ryan Sheppard shot his career best this match with a 441-5. Small Bore Report 1. NRA WV State Conventional Smallbore Prone Championship. Day Six: The surprise of the week for the WVJMP was the National Infantry Team Match. Each year we have improved, despite the fact we do not practice for this match! The juniors come together the week of nationals and begin doing some education and training on the strategy and rules of this match. This year, the juniors worked themselves up to a high finish of 6 th place out of junior teams with a score of 596. It was a great end to good week of competition. The WVJMP is quite proud of our accomplishments this year! We have two first year juniors, 2 second year juniors, 2 third year juniors, and one veteran seven year junior. Three new full time coaches joined the ranks and we have parents who are learning this challenging shooting sport along with their juniors. We also had a unique team this year with three sets of siblings! A first for us! Also, a first was having three women shooters. These girls were awesome and as you can imagine, took the rivalry from the guys in good humor and many times surpassed them! Our goal is to not only train and educate competition shooters, but to make a positive difference in young people s lives in giving them a fun, safe environment to build a team!
