The Knights wrapped up a seven-day, eight-game road trip on Sunday in Gwinnett with a 12-5 win over the G-Braves. The Knights went 4-4 on the eight-game homestand through Norfolk and Gwinnett. The Knights enter today s finale with a win in eight of their last 14 games. The Knights now have just five games left this season and all five are at home against two IL South Division foes the Durham Bulls (Triple-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays) from 8/28-8/31 and Norfolk Tides (Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles (9/1-9/4). The Knights are 1-2 so far on this eight-game homestand. ABOUT LAST KNIGHT: The Charlotte Knights dropped game three of their four-game series against the Durham Bulls by a score of 10-6 on Wednesday from BB&T Ballpark in Uptown Charlotte. Offensively, both teams used the long ball to score runs in Wednesday s matchup. The Knights got home runs from 2B Jake Peter, C Roberto Pena, and INF/OF Cody Asche. Peter s home run led-off the bottom of the first inning. It was his eighth of the season with the Knights. One inning later, Pena launched his third home run of the season, while Asche s 13th of the year came in the second inning as well. Overall, three of Charlotte s five hits on the night left the yard. All of the home runs came off Durham starter Hunter Adkins, who allowed six runs on five hits over four innings of work. KNIGHTS vs. BULLS: The Knights enter today s finale of their four-game series against the Durham Bulls (83-53) with a 4-18 head-to-head mark on the season. The Bulls recently clinched the International League South Division with a 3-2 win over the Gwinnett Braves on Thursday, August 24th in Durham. The division title is their 13th in the 20-year history of the Bulls as a Triple-A team and their first since 2014. The Knights went 11-13 last season against the Bulls. ALL ABOUT THAT BASE: OF Jacob May is second in the IL this year with 29 stolen bases. Since June 1 (79 games), May has 26 stolen bases the second most over that span in the IL. In two seasons with the Knights, May has now swiped 48 bases (19 last year), which is seventh alltime in franchise history. He also a total of seven triples (two last year), which is tied for 10th all-time in franchise history. He currently leads the International League in sacrifice hits with 15. JAKE S RAKING: 2B Jake Peter launched his eighth home run of the season last night. With the Knights, Peter is now hitting.291 (46-for-158) with 26 runs scored, seven doubles, one triple, eight home runs, and 24 RBIs in 40 games with the Knights this season. Peter was promoted to take the roster spot of 2B Yoan Moncada, who was promoted to the Chicago White Sox. At the time of his promotion, Peter was in the midst of a nine-game hitting streak with the Barons. Peter, 24, was hitting.270 (77-for-285) with 35 runs scored, 12 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 21 RBIs, and four stolen bases in 75 games with the Barons this year. He was selected by the White Sox in the seventh round of the June 2014 First-Year Player Draft. For his efforts in Birmingham this season, Peter was named as the Barons Player of the Year. NO PLACE LIKE HOLMBERG: LHP David Holmberg (3-1, 2.78) was sharp on Tuesday tossing seven shutout innings for the Knights in game two of the four-game series. It was his fourth of the season with the team and third since being outrighted to Charlotte on August 11th from the Chicago White Sox, where he went 2-3 with a 3.55 ERA (50.2 IP). He joined Charlotte s active roster on August 15th. As a reliever with the Knights this season, Holmberg has yet to allow a run in six games (11.2 IP). He was originally drafted by the White Sox in the second round of the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft out of Port Charlotte (FL) High School. In parts of four seasons in the majors (112.2 IP), Holmberg owns a 5-9 record with a 5.03 ERA (47 games). CHARLOTTE STARTING PITCHER: The Knights will hand the ball to RHP Chris Volstad (2-10, 5.92), who will make his 18th start of the season today. Volstad, 30, has appeared in a total of 26 games this season (111.0 IP). He has two complete games and a save also to his credit this year. KNOTEWORTHY DURHAM STARTNG PITCHER: RHP Yonny Chirinos (12-5, 2.85) will get the start for the Bulls in today s finale against the Knights. Today s start will be his 22nd of the season and 23rd overall appearance with the Bulls this season. In one start against the Knights this season (June 6 at BB&T Ballpark), he earned the win (1-0, 1.29 ERA in 7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 SO). Chirinios is a native of Bachaquero, VZ. HALL OF FAME NIGHT: On Friday, September 1st, the Charlotte Knights will induct Drungo LaRue Hazewood into the Charlotte Baseball Round Table of Honor. Hazewood, a standout with the Charlotte O s for four seasons, will be inducted posthumously. His wife, Venus, will accept the award on his behalf during a pre-game ceremony. A number of his former Charlotte O s teammates and members of the Crockett family, including Charlotte Baseball Round Table of Honor member, Frances Crockett, will also be in attendance for the game. STAR POWER: 1B/DH Danny Hayes homered twice on Sunday, August 20th giving him a total of 19 on the season the most on the Knights this season. Hayes is the team leader in RBIs with 67 and is also the leader in grand slams this season with three (April 8, May 27, & May 31). Last season, Hayes also hit a grand slam giving him four in less than two full seasons. The 19 home runs are a career-high. KNOTABLES: On Tuesday, the Southern League named RHP Michael Kopech to their annual Post-Season All-Star Team as the team s right-handed pitcher. Yesterday, Kopech was named as the Southern League s Pitcher of the Year. He posted an 8-7 record with a 2.87 ERA in 22 starts with the Barons this season. In 119.1 IP, he has allowed just 77 hits while striking out 155 batters, which currently leads the Southern League. While with Birmingham, opponents hit just.184 against him this season, tops in the Southern League RHP Connor Walsh (0-1, 6.00) will be one of the Chicago White Sox players to represent the organization at the Arizona Fall League this year. He is the only member on Charlotte s active roster selected this year. KOPECH DAY: RHP Michael Kopech (1-0, 2.70), who is scheduled to start Friday s game, started Saturday s game (August 26th) and had a nohitter through four innings and allowed his first hit and only one run in the fifth inning. He went a total of five innings and allowed one run on two hits, while striking out six batters. Kopech was promoted from Double-A Birmingham on August 19th and officially joined the Charlotte roster on August 21st. He made his Triple-A debut on Monday, August 21st from Norfolk, VA and allowed two runs on six hits in five innings of work to earn the win. Kopech, 21, is the No. 12 prospect in baseball and No. 3 in the Chicago White Sox system according to MLB.com. He posted an 8-7 record with a 2.87 ERA in 22 starts with the Barons this season. He hit his 17th home run of the season last night, which is second on the Knights this season. Liriano hit.345 (10-for-29) with seven runs scored, three home runs and seven RBIs in seven games from August 7-13. For his efforts that week, he was named as International League s Batter of the Week on Monday, August 14th. Over the course of that seven-game week, Liriano was among the International League leaders in a number of categories. He recorded the most extra-base hits (6), and was tied for the most home runs (three), as well as the most total bases (22) 400 CLUB : OF Jason Bourgeois, who was placed on the DL on Friday, August 25th, is the newest member of the Charlotte Knights 400-Hit Club. He recorded his 400th career Charlotte Knights hit in the top of the seventh inning of the game on August 13th against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs from Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, PA. Since then, he has tallied a total of 404 hits for his career. Bourgeois is one of just three members in that club -- joining all-time Knights hits leader, Jordan Danks (449), and Joe Borchard (439).
