Westview High School Jon Franco Ed.D., Principal Cheryl Ashdown, Assistant Principal Rod Barraclough, Assistant Principal Aki Mori, Assistant Principal Westview High School s Collective Commitment: Engage diverse learners in safe and equitable environments through innovative strategies that foster critical thinking in high school and beyond. Happy Friday to All of You! March 17, 2017 Quote of the Week: "My dad encouraged us to fail. Growing up, he would ask us what we failed at that week. If we didn't have something, he would be disappointed. It changed my mindset at an early age that failure is not the outcome, failure is not trying. Don't be afraid to fail." Sara Blakely March 14th Career Expo On Tuesday we took over 600 of our sophomores, almost the entire sophomore class to the Convention Center in Downtown Portland. The students were provided opportunities to interact with a multitude of professionals from an amazing expanse of occupations. Students were able to briefly experience jobs through machines, videos, cars, and of course through conversation. Thank you to Jennifer Bailey and Carrie Matsuo for organizing the event and of course to the students, staff and parents who participated! You can see pictures of the event on my twitter. Westview HS PRIDE@WestviewCats Progress Reports The progress reporting grading period ends today thus we expect to mail home progress grades next week. College and Career Corner: Follow the College and Career Center: IMPORTANT UPDATES ARE POSTED ON THESE SOCIAL MEDIA OUTLETS Facebook: Westview College and Career Center; Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat: @WestviewHS_CCC SOPHOMORE CLASS Field Trip: Thank you staff, students and parent volunteers for making our visit to the NW Youth Careers Expo a success! We received many positive reviews from students about the variety and engagement at the fair. SENIORS: Jostens will be at both lunches on Wednesday, March 22. SUMMER JOBS: Several local businesses have contacted us looking for summer employees. Please visit the Job/Volunteer Board in the Counseling Center, and follow us on social media, to find out about these opportunities.

SUMMER LEARNING: We have created a board in the main hallway with a display of schools offering amazing summer options for both academics and travel. Take a look near the south staircase. March is Diversity Month in Community Time and next week is Community Week! This month we will be talking to the kids about what diversity is, and of course why it is important that we are accepting of everyone regardless of what they look like, or their experiences they bring to the table. We are not just about acceptance, but we are also about celebrating this diversity. This is important! Next Friday we will also have our Multicultural Assembly which is our best and most celebrated assembly of the year. WHS Library, Chrome, and Canvas Corner Follow the WHS Tech page: Read&Write is a dynamic extension for Chrome. BSD students who add this extension right now will have the ability to take full advantage of the Pro edition: highlighting websites, text to speech, page simplification, picture dictionary, and more. To learn about this resource (including a helpful how-to video) go to: http://bit.ly/whsfuture. Or, check out our website for information about useful apps to enhance your Chromebook: http://bit.ly/whsfutureready. Canvas: For an up to date calendar, quick links to library resources, technology tips, and the latest news about our school, parents, and students can go to our All Student Canvas page. Check it out:http://bit.ly/whscanvas Digital Citizenship tip of the week: Teaching kids character strengths and life skills is one of the most important jobs of parents, caregivers, and teachers. Hundreds of times a day, often without realizing it, we seize on moments to reinforce strengths such as humility, integrity, perseverance, and teamwork. Increasingly, the launchpad for these lessons is media. Learn more about character strengths, tips for using media to bolster them, and recommendations for media the whole family can learn from and share. These resources from Common Sense Media may help navigate the conversation: http://bit.ly/whscharacter Oregon State Assessment Unfortunately, we have been notified that we are going to have to delay our initial testing opening by one week due to us not having completed 60% of the school year as of yet. Junior parents will be receiving separate information by email about this change. Thank you for your patience and good luck to our kids, they will do great! Information on Smarter Balanced Assessment please see our website. https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/schools/westview/pages/smarter-balance- Assessment-Information.aspx Shout-Outs -Maya Hopper won two Silver Key Awards in Drawing and Illustration and Iremayowa Olopade won one Silver Key Award in painting which are awards given on a National Level.
