BOSTON BRUINS PROSPECT REPORT December 15, 2011 Semi-monthly statistical and noteworthy updates on all players in the Bruins organization not currently on the Boston roster Notes: Professional Player Spotlight: David Warsofsky (Providence Bruins, AHL) Amateur Player Spotlight: Brian Ferlin (Cornell University, ECAC) All statistics are current through games of December 14, 2011 Carl Soderberg is not listed, as he remains under contract to a European team.

PROSPECT SPOTLIGHTS PROFESSIONAL PROSPECT DAVID WARSOFSKY Providence Bruins (AHL) Defense 5 9 170 lbs. Age 21 Acquired: Trade w/st. Louis (Vladimir Sobotka, June 26, 2010) BostonBruins.com -- When a student leaves college a year before graduation, it tends to be for less than positive reasons. But David Warsofsky had pretty good argument for not completing his degree; the opportunity to play professional hockey. A talented defenseman who made a name for himself as a member of the Boston University Terriers, Warsofsky was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the 4th round (#95 overall), of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. However, the decision to turn pro didn't come about until he'd been traded to the Boston Bruins during the summer of 2010. "It's always hard to forgo your senior year," said Warsofsky of his decision to leave school early. "But I sat down with my family and the coaches at BU and they just thought that it was the right decision- for the future of my hockey career and just me as a person." Warsofsky's performance in the Bruins organization supports his reasoning as his skill has garnered praise from the Bruins' coaching and management staff on numerous occasions. During the 2011 development camp Assistant General Manager Don Sweeney was impressed by the young defenseman. "I think [his poise] exhibits his hockey sense overall in terms of he wants to gain," said Sweeney. "He doesn't want to force things offensively, he want things to open up." General Manager Peter Chiarelli saw something else in Warsofsky's game. "You can see his skill out there," said Chiarelli. "He's an incredible stretch passer." No doubt, Warsofsky is aware of his skill set, but remains focused on improving his game. "I think I'm an offensive-type of defenseman and I think that's what they want me to do down here in Providence," said the blueliner."but at the same time, I think in order to be able to play at the next level, you need to be an all around defenseman. "So I've been working on that, too." As he's continued to work on his defensive game, Warsofsky has been strong on the P-Bruins power play alongside teammates Carter Camper and Jamie Tardif -- a trio that has already given Providence five power play goals this season. "It's always good when you play with guys that you can trust and you have a little chemistry," said Warsofsky. Through 25 games during his first full AHL season in Black & Gold, Warsofsky has produced a 1-11=12 line, but that's no shock to anyone who saw him play in scarlet and white. At BU he achieved plenty of success with career totals of 22-46=113 and was a big part of the Terriers' 2009 Beanpot, Hockey East and NCAA titles. And although Warsofsky was able to play at the TD Garden during numerous Hockey East and Beanpot tournament games, the Marshfield, Mass. native awaits the day he gets to return to Causeway Street in a Bruins jersey. "When you're playing in a sold out Garden it's a fun thing, but when you're playing for the Boston Bruins in a sold out Garden, it's obviously another thing," said Warsofsky."That's my goal- to play on that stage one day. "I just work towards that every day." -Amanda Ostuni

AMATEUR PROSPECT BRIAN FERLIN Cornell University (ECAC) Right Wing 6 2 201 lbs. Age 19 Acquired: 2011 Entry Draft (4th pick/121st overall) BostonBruins.com -- Drafted by the Bruins this past spring's NHL Entry Draft, Brian Ferlin became the only player from Jacksonville, FL ever to be picked and the big 6-foot-2, 201-pound forward was humbled his selection was made by Boston. I was really excited about it, said Ferlin of being drafted by the Stanley Cup champions. It s a huge honor to be drafted by them. Though he's currently wearing the colors of the Cornell University Big Red, this past summer Ferlin also donned Black & Gold when he participated in the annual Bruins Development Camp. It was nice to compete against some of the guys from around the world that you hear about, explained the 19-year-old. They re all good players. However, the young Ferlin wasn t exactly hidden in the shadows of the Bruins other amateur prospects. He s got good speed, he s got good size, he s got good skills, said B s assistant general manager Don Sweeney during camp. I think he ll continue to get more and more comfortable on the ice as he plays more and more hockey. In his first season in the ECAC, Cornell's Ferlin is proving Sweeney right. Through 11 games he is tied for a team best +10 rating and is second in goals (5), assists (7) and points (12). Thanks to that success early in the 2011-2012 campaign, the Floridian was invited to attend the 2012 U.S. National Junior Team s pretournament camp in late December, when 29 players will compete for a roster spot on Team USA for the upcoming IHF Word Junior Championship. I m glad I get the opportunity to go out there and hopefully make the team, said the B s prospect, whose talents haven't been overlooked by his conference, either. Ferlin was named ECAC s Rookie of the Month when he registered 5 goals, 6 assists and a +9 rating in only nine games in November. Although he was honored to receive the award, a modest Ferlin gave most of the credit to his Cornell teammates. I think that just goes to show the team as a whole how we re playing, explained the Big Red forward. I don t think I could have gotten that award without the team playing well. And it's clear that the B s 2011 draft pick has quickly adapted to his Ivy League surroundings. I couldn t have been happier with my decision to come here, said Ferlin, whose team has made a commitment to serve the local community of Ithaca, NY. We take part in a lot of community events around here, he explained. The community is so big [to the] Cornell Hockey program, so we try to give back. Regardless of his numerous accomplishments on and off the ice, Ferlin is pushing himself to improve day-in and day-out. Keep playing hard and doing the little things every day, he tells himself. Just continue to get bigger, stronger and faster just keep developing. ---John Griffin

The New England Hockey Journal s Kirk Luedeke contributes an in-depth feature to the Boston Bruins Prospect Report. This edition s feature focuses on the organization s ties to the upcoming World Junior Championship. Bruins prospects look to make big impact at World Juniors By: Kirk Luedeke The holidays are right around the corner, and hardcore hockey fans know what that means: the annual International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship tournaments are where the top junior talent is showcased. This is the most prestigious international competition for players under 20 representing the globe's top hockey powers. The Boston Bruins will have at least one player competing in the main tournament in Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta later this month. The team also has a presence in Germany, where the separate World Jr. Division I tournament is currently going on between countries who did not qualify for the main bracket of 10 countries. Defenseman Dougie Hamilton, the team s top choice (ninth overall) in last June's NHL Entry Draft, was named to Team Canada s final roster this week. He joins forward Freddie Hamilton (a fifth-round pick of San Jose in 2010) as the first brother duo to play on the same Canadian WJC squad in 30 years (Randy and Mike Moller skated together on the 1982 WJC entry). Many B's fans are already acquainted with the younger Hamilton, 18, who broke St. Louis star Alex Pietrangelo s Niagara Ice Dogs franchise record for points by a defenseman a year ago with 58. This season he s on pace to shatter that mark as the OHLâ s top scoring defenseman, having already hit the 45-point mark in just 30 contests (good for sixth overall in the OHL currently). At 6-foot-4 and a shade under 195 pounds, the son of two Canadian Olympians is not only getting things done offensively in the OHL, but is also impressing observers with his effective defensive play. Hamilton should see considerable time on the power play for Canada s skilled but relatively inexperienced defense. Born in June, 1993, Hamilton is the second youngest player on Canada s blue line corps, ahead of only Ryan Murray, who just missed the 2011 draft cutoff with a Sep. 27, 1993 birthdate. Center Ryan Spooner had a good chance of also making the Canada roster, but was diagnosed with mononucleosis late last week. The 45th overall pick in 2010 hopes to return to action with the OHL s Kingston Frontenacs in about three weeks. Spooner remains upbeat despite the disappointment of not being able to participate in the WJC in his final year of eligibility and actually felt well enough to attend the Bruins/Senators game in Ottawa on Wednesday, December 14. Boston's second choice in 2011, center Alexander Khokhlachev, will attend the North American portion of Team Russia s World Jr. evaluation camp. The team, which plays in Group A, arrives in Calgary on Dec. 18. The skilled and creative scoring forward is currently tenth overall in the OHL s scoring race with 15 goals, 43 points in 33 games with the Windsor Spitfires. Right wing Brian Ferlin will travel to Alberta this week to make his case for selection on Team USA s final WJC roster. Should the Cornell freshman and fourth-round selection by the Bruins succeed, he would become the first Florida-born and trained hockey player to compete in the under-20 tournament. The Jacksonville native got off to a hot start with the Big Red, with five goals and 12 points in his first 11 NCAA games. With his size and potential, Ferlin has a good chance of making the final cut for USA, with the team to be announced on Dec. 22. Should he succeed, Ferlin will take on Hamilton and Team Canada in Edmonton on New Year s Eve. Norweigian goaltender Lars Volden, Boston's sixth-round pick in the draft, is playing in the WJCâ s Divison I tournament. Norway was relegated to the lower bracket after finishing last in the top division in Buffalo a year ago. Volden and his teammates square off against Austria, Belarus, Great Britain and Slovenia in the round robin, which runs through the 17th, followed by the medal round. Volden went 2-1 in his team s first three games including a 41-save performance against Austria in a 5-2 win. Boston's representation in the World Jr. tournaments speaks to the organization s solid depth and recent success in the 2010 and 2011 entry drafts. Kirk Luedeke covers the Boston Bruins and NHL prospects for the New England Hockey Journal.

Carter Camper, Kyle MacKinnon, and Craig Cunningham each notched a goal on the night. MacKinnon s goal was his first point after going scoreless in eleven games. Camper s came on the power play while Cunningham s goal was the game winner and earned him the Number One Star honor for the night. FIGHTING WHALE: Providence topped the Northeast Division leading Connecticut Whale in a 3-2 win filled with penalties on Dec. 11. After a tough 3-0 loss the night before at Connecticut, tensions were high between the two teams. At 5:32, Lane MacDermid dropped the gloves with Aaron Voros in a drawn out battle. The fight fueled the emotions as 72 total penalty minutes, including two misconducts and one game-misconduct for Connecticut, were logged in the first period alone. The pushing and shoving continued throughout the game, with the score sheet reading 86 total penalty minutes on the night. TRYOUT: Providence announced on Dec. 10 that the club has signed defenseman Jordon Southorn to a Professional Tryout Agreement. Southorn made his professional debut with the Trenton Titans (ECHL) in 2010-11. In 19 games with the Titans this season, the blueliner has recorded 3-7=10 totals and 11 penalty minutes. Southorn is a four-year product of the Prince Edward Island Rocket of the QMJHL. In his final season in junior (2009-10), Southorn finished third among defensemen in points with 23. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound defenseman led the Rocket blue liners in scoring in 2008-09 with a career-high 35 assists and 41 points. The 21 year-old finished his junior career with 27-78=105 totals in 258 regular season games. Southorn was selected 104 th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. MAC IS BACK: The Macs of the P-Bruins all broke their scoreless streaks in December. AMATEUR PROSPECT NOTES WORLD JUNIORS: The 2012 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships (2012 WJHC) will be heading back to Canada to be hosted in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta. The tournament will begin on Dec. 26 with the gold medal game played in Calgary on Jan. 5, 2012. Dougie Hamilton will represent Team Cananda. Ryan Spooner was also invited to Team Canada s evaluation camp but will miss the WJHC because of mononucleosis. Brian Ferlin has made the 29-man preliminary roster for Team USA. The final 22-man roster for Team USA is expected to be announced on Dec. 22. Alexander Khokhlachev has been invited to the final Team Russia camp, he will report to the club on Dec. 18 in Calgary. Goaltender Lars Volden will represent Team Norway in Division I. KOKO VS SPOONER: The B s prospects stole the spotlight as Ryan Spooner of the Kingston Frontenacs faced-off with Alexander Khokhlachev and the Windsor Spitfires on Dec. 4. Khokhlechev and Spooner both finished with 2-1=3 totals, Khokhlachev with the Number One Star with Spooner the Number Two Star. Khokhlachev s two goals both came on the power play while both of Spooner s were short handed. At the end of the night, the Spits came out on top with a 5-3 win. KNIGHT LEADING KNIGHTS: Since last report, Jared Knight has recorded a point in every game. His best showing was on Dec. 2, when he recorded a power play goal and assist, helping the Knights power play to go 2 for 3 in their 6-0 win against Saginaw. The London Knights are now first in the Western Conference with Knight tied for 3 rd on the team in points (31) and 2 nd in the OHL for plus/minus (+21). SIGNED: Dougie Hamilton s hard work has paid off. The Boston Bruins signed Hamilton to an Entry Level Contract on Dec. 8. As Boston s first-round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Hamilton currently leads all OHL defensemen in scoring, the next closest (Cody Ceci) being 13 points behind. For the IceDogs, he leads the team in points (45), assists (33), and power play goals (7) while recording a new career high ten-game point streak from Nov. 5 Dec. 1. COURCHAINE CRUISING: The Alaska Aces (18-4-2) have been cruising and Adam Courchaine has been contributing. The Aces currently lead the ECHL with 38 points and have been unbeaten in regulation for 12 consecutive games (10-0-2). Courchaine contributed to 4 of those 12 wins going 3-0-1 and only allowing 6 goals against. The Aces outscored their opponents 14 to 6 in games when Courchaine guarded the net. Most recently in a 6-1 win on Dec. 10, Courchaine came closest to a shutout as he held Utah without a goal for 158 minutes and 41 seconds until Paul McIlveen scored with less than two minutes left in regulation. UPDATE FROM RUSSIA: After a stellar start to the season, Maxim Chudinov and the Severstal Cherepovets have been slow in production thus far in December. After going 5-4-1 in November, Severstal is 1-3-0 four games into December, their first win coming most recently in a 4-1 win over Torpedo on Dec. 11. That win ended a season high four-game losing streak. Despite his pause in scoring, Chudinov is still maxing out in other areas. He is 2 nd on his team in scoring (23), leading in average on-ice time (24:19) and shots on goal (86), and tied for 1 st in power play goals (5). O GARA UPDATE: Rob O Gara and the Milton Academy Mustangs are now five games deep into the season. After a slow start to the season (0-3-0) the Mustangs have recorded two wins in back-to-back nights to put their record at 2-3- 0. O Gara (1-2=3 totals) scored a power play goal in a 10-3 loss vs. the number-two ranked St. Sebastian s on Dec. 3. PERFECT DECEMBER: The young prospect goalies have perfect records so far in December. Adam Courchaine and Zane Gothberg have each started and won their first two games in the month of December. Courchaine has a 1.72 GAA thus far this month while Gothberg is at 3.05 GAA. GAME TO WATCH: Team Canada will take on Team USA at Rexall Place, Edmonton, Alberta at 8:00 p.m. EST on Saturday Dec. 31 in the preliminary round of the 2012 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship. Dougie Hamilton will be representing Team Canada while Brian Ferlin will look to represent Team USA. Team USA s final roster will be announced on Dec. 22.
