All times Eastern HOLY CROSS TO OPEN THE SEASON WITH MERCYHURST The Holy Cross men s hockey team will open the 2017-18 season with an Atlantic Hockey series with the Mercyhurst Lakers at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex. HOLY CROSS IN HOME OPENERS Under head coach David Berard, the Crusaders have a 1-4 record in season openers and in home openers. In the 2016-17 season, the Crusaders defeated Niagara, 8-2 in their first game and defeated Providence, 2-1 in overtime to open the hockey season in Worcester. RECAPPING 2016-17 Last year, the Crusaders went 14-15-7 overall and 11-10-7 in Atlantic Hockey. Holy Cross ranked fourth in Atlantic Hockey in scoring offense, averaging 2.75 goals per game. The Crusaders ranked fifth in the league in scoring defense, allowing an average of 2.94 goals per game. Holy Cross finished with the league s sixth best conversion rate on the power play at 17.0% The Crusaders were the least penalized team in Atlantic Hockey, with 9.5 penalty minutes per game and held a 76.4% success rate on the penalty kill. WHO S RETURNING Twenty-three Crusaders return for the 2017-18 season. Danny Lopez led the team in points (17-16-33) and led the league in power play goals with 12. Four of the team s top five points leaders return. Paul Berrafato played 2100:32 minutes between the pipes for the Crusaders, holding a.896 save percentage in 2016-17 and enters his senior season. FRESH FACES Head coach David Berard adds five to the roster for the 2017-18 season - two defensemen and three forwards. Frank Boie and Logan Milliken join the defensive core, each with BCHL experience. Andrew Dumaresque, Logan Ferguson, and Pete Kessel join the Crusader offense. The five-player class provides valuable depth and competition at the forward and defense positions and enhances our

style of play, said Berard about the newcomers. PRESEASON RECOGNITION The Crusaders were picked sixth in the Atlantic Hockey Preseason Coaches poll with 58 points. Holy Cross finished the 2016-17 season in fifth place in the league (11-10-7) and with an overall record of 14-15-7. The team finished in fourth among the league in scoring, averaging 2.75 goals per game. HOLY CROSS IN EXHIBITION PLAY The Crusaders played Carleton on Sept. 29 at the Hart Center. All 27 players dressed in the exhibition. Both Paul Berrafato and Tommy Nixon saw time between the pipes. Brett Mulcahy and Ryan Ferrill each notched two points off of one goal and one assist in the exhibition. SADERS IN THE SUMMER T.J. Moore attended the Boston Bruins development camp as one of the eight players invited who are not in the Bruins organization. Moore aims to bring his NHL Development Camp experience into the 2017-18 season at Holy Cross. CRUSADER CAPTAINS Brett Mulcahy continues at the helm of the Crusader leadership, serving as captain for the second consecutive season. Tommy Muratore and T.J. Moore have been named assistant captains for the second straight year. As a junior, Michael Laffin joins the Crusader leadership as an assistant captain. Practicing such discipline throughout the season earned the Crusaders the 2016-17 Atlantic Hockey Team Sportsmanship Award. The team s 9.5 penalty minutes per game were the fourth lowest nationally. BERRAFATO IN GOAL Senior goaltender Paul Berrafato enters the 2017-18 season having played 78 games, amassing 4501:21 minutes of play. He has made 1,814 saves and faced 2,002 shots for a career goals against average of.906 and 2.51 goals against average. He claims a.513 winning percentage with an overall record of 33-31-12. As a junior, Berrafato played in all 36 games, made 840 saves and posted three shutouts. SCOUTING MERCYHURST The Lakers bring a veteran team to the 2017-18 season, with 21 seniors and juniors. Derek Barach and Jonathan Charbonneau return to Mercyhurst as the 2016-17 leading points scorer and goal scorer, respectively. Last season, the Laker goaltenders split time. Brandon Wildung played in 24 games, recording a.908 save percentage and a 3.08 goals against average. Colin DeAugustine played in 20 games and totaled a.913 save percentage and 3.12 goals against average. Mercyhurst will also open its season, having played an exhibition game with Ryerson on Oct. 7, falling 7-6 in overtime. The Lakers finished the 2016-17 season with a powerplay conversion rate of 15.3% rate and a penalty kill success rate of 76.9%. The Crusaders and Lakers last battled at the Hart Center on Jan. 20-21, skating to a 3-3 tie in both games. In the games, Berrafato made 52 saves and Scott Pooley collected a pair of goals. Kevin Darrar, Michael Laffin, Danny Lopez and Brett Mulcahy also scored. In his three seasons at Holy Cross, the Crusaders are 46-46-17 overall and have posted a 39-28-17 record in Atlantic Hockey. The Crusaders went 14-15-7 overall and 11-10-7 in Atlantic Hockey in the 2016-2017 season. The team finished an impressive 3-1-1 against NCAA Tournament teams during the 2016-2017 season including a 2-1 overtime win over No. 11 Providence at the DCU Center and a 6-4 victory versus No. 20 Union. This was only the second time that the Crusaders defeated two nationally ranked teams during one season. The team earned the Atlantic Hockey Team Sportsmanship Award for having the fewest amount of penalty minutes. The Crusaders finished 18-13-5 in the 2015-2016 season and posted a 16-7-5 record in conference action. The Crusaders 16 conference victories were the most since the 2005-2006 season. The Crusaders posted their best finish in Atlantic Hockey since 2005-2006 placing second. The Crusaders led the league with 2.11 goals allowed per game in conference games. The Crusaders went 14-18-5 overall and 12-11-5 in Atlantic Hockey in the 2014-2015 season. The Crusaders only allowed 2.35 goals per game which set a school record. Senior goalie Matt Ginn earned first team All-Atlantic Hockey honors. The 2006-2007 season was the last time a Crusader had been on the first team. A goaltender in his playing days at Providence, Berard was a member of one of the most successful classes to wear a Friar uniform, amassing a total of 87 wins over their four-year career. Berard was a member of three teams that reached the Hockey East Tournament semifinals and two teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Berard graduated from Providence in 1992 with a bachelor s degree in business marketing. He and his wife, Lynne, have two sons (Brett and Brady).
