DSC President's Message Well, we are back from the Mid-Winter ACSC/SOS Meeting at North Myrtle Beach. This required meeting started at 10 am and continued through lunch and ended early afternoon. It is interesting to listen and often participate in various parts of the program. I was proud that we were well represented with our four elected officers attending. Many clubs have less representation and occasionally a club has no representative which lands it on probation and creates membership problems. We were also well represented throughout the weekend with some thirty members enjoying various SOS activities. And no doubt, we were the best looking club there! Although there is much business covered, I will cut to the chase. Two SOS Board seats were up for election. Doris Keaton, the Eden Shag Club President, and Don Davis, the originator/director of the amusing & animated spring parade, retained their seats on the board. Five new icons were selected. They will join a long list which includes our club's two ACSC Icons- John Gilstrap and Sandra Strader. You can view the new selections on the website, shagdance.com. If you ever need ACSC or SOS information in general just go to this website. It covers all, including what's going on at the various clubs. I was also surprised to learn that there were 13,659 SOS cards sold in 2015. Then I thought, no wonder Patsy and I can't get on the dance floor at O. D. Arcade during peak times. Punxsutawney Phil says we are going to have a short winter and I am all for that. We have a number of fun events scheduled and you will want to join in. Friday, February 5th: Dance at Santanas to a Super Bowl 50 theme; door prizes Friday, February 12th: Our Valentine Dance will begin with Line Dancing featuring Bonnie Meeler at 7:15; door prizes Thursday, February 18, 7:30 pm: Band of OZ performs their makeup concert at the Historic North Theater. Your DSC will sponsor the cash bar so come out and support this fundraiser. Monday, March 7, 7&8 pm: Shag/Step Lessons. Beginner lessons the first hour; advance moves step class the second. Ends April 11th. Friday Sunday, March 25th-27th in Fredericksburg: Come join several of us as we celebrate John Gilstrap's VSHOF Induction. Saturday, April 9TH : The Annual IRS Dance (I'd Rather Shag than Pay Taxes) *Find details on all these events in this newsletter! If that is not enough, I must mention our Annual Golf Fundraiser at Goodyear Golf Course on Friday, May 13th. This is a fun event and raises mega bucks for charity. You will want to be involved in some capacity, whether as a player, sponsor or a needed volunteer on game day. Our Ways & Means chair, David Stevens and his committee are busy making initial decisions. We are an engaged club and pulling all this together is challenging and fun but the most enjoyable part of the whole year is seeing you on our regular Friday nights. Shag Lessons The Danville Shag Club, along with instructors John & Janice Gilstrap, will be providing Beginners Shag dance lessons for six weeks beginning Monday, March 7, 2016 at 7:00 PM at Santana's Restaurant located at 102 Tower Drive Danville, VA. Lessons will take place in the banquet room. The cost is $30 per person for six Beginner lessons. An Intermediate level "Shag Step" class will be taught following the Beginner class for a cost of $5 per class. The shag step class will focus on learning new shag steps.
