Minimum Requirements for Varsity and Junior Varsity Competitive Varsity (Check sample score sheet for bonus opportunities) - Standing Tuck - Round-off handspring - Base/ fly in a 360⁰, squish, show 1 body position, full cradle Junior Varsity - Standing Back Hand Spring For Varsity, we strive to have a full squad with the same skills. This requirement will not make or break your chance for the team, but be prepared to work towards this goal. Should you make either team without these skills, be prepared to continue working to gain them. We plan to have this goal met by mid- football season. Body positions must include 1 of the following: heel stretch, scale, scorpion, bow and arrow or front stretch ALL TUMBLING SKILLS FOR JV AND VARSITY MUST BE SHOWN TO THE COACHES A MINIMUM OF 5 TIMES BEFORE BEING ASSESSED AT TRYOUTS. *Candidates must show they can complete the minimum requirement before attempting any skill that allows bonus points ** One fall without points deducted will be granted. Two points will be deducted thereafter if it is determined that the fall is due to lack of execution. ***Dismounts- For the skill to be considered complete, a full cradle must be performed. Should a straight cradle be performed, points will be deducted. Cheerleaders should not attempt to tryout with any skill he/she does not know how to do well. Example: Do not attempt a full cradle if you have never done a straight cradle Do not attempt a back-handspring if you have never done a back bend. Cheerleading takes an enormous amount of time, effort and dedication. Hough High Cheerleading will come second only to academics or family emergencies, not to any other extra-curricular activities. (Some leniencies may be granted for competitive cheer or dance, at coach discretion). Please discuss this with your child to see if they are willing to make a definite commitment to Hough High School. During football season, we will practice Monday through Thursday (V: 3:00-4:30 or JV: 4:30-6:00) and have a game on Thursday or Friday nights, depending on making Varsity or JV. Each team will have at least one day of practice off during the week once school starts. (V: Wednesday, JV: Monday) During basketball season, we have 2 to 3 games a week and practice on the other days. (When we actually get in to the season, we may have days where practice is not necessary, per coach discretion.) We will begin each practice by running and tumbling in order to build the stamina required to cheer through game in its entirety. Also, cheerleaders will be required to attend at least one, 1 hour tumbling session per week. Cheerleaders are expected to act as ladies/gentlemen as they will be role models and represent our school. In the same respect, it is expected that all cheerleaders maintain a 2.0 GPA. Finally, cheerleaders will be required to purchase several items in order to participate in the sport, such as, bloomers, shoes, briefs, spirit wear, warmups and other items. There will also be a participation fee of $100 for each season cheered. This total will be approximately $400.00 (We are currently looking for reduced prices). Fundraisers, if necessary will cover any outstanding costs. If parents or candidates have any questions, please ask during tryouts or before and after school. Email is the best way to contact anytime. We look forward to a successful week of tryouts! Good luck to all! Mrs. Anderson jennac.anderson@cms.k12.nc.us Ms. Cordery tonya.cordery@cms.k12.nc.us 3
