Season Outlook History Records 2005 in Review Opponents Coaching Staff Newcomers 2006 Kansas Jayhawks Introduction Talented Jayhawks Prepared for Return to NCAA s Coming off a second place finish in the Big 2 in 2005, the University of Kansas is looking to get back to the NCAA Tournament with a mix of experienced players and a freshman class ready to compete at a high level. We are very excited about the talent of this year s team, said head coach Mark Francis as he enters his eighth season at the helm of the Jayhawk program. We have a lot of talent, maybe the most talent that we've had. Now we just need to make sure we have the leadership and the other intangibles that go into making a successful team. After finishing in a second place tie in the Big 2 last season, the Jayhawks were left on the outside looking in when the NCAA Tournament field was announced. With a solid group of returning players and a talented freshmen class, Francis and the Jayhawks are motivated to not let the NCAA snub happen again. If the spring is any indication the team is definitely motivated after not getting into the tournament last year which was very disappointing with the season we had, Francis said. I think it's motivated them more, coming into the preseason they will be more prepared and a lot fitter. The hardest thing is going to be to establish the starters, continued Francis. There is so much talent we need to find a way to get them on the field, but that's a good problem to have. Forwards Despite losing Caroline Smith - KU's all-time leading scorer - the Jayhawks will still be strong at the forward position. After being named an All-American and All- Big 2 selection as a defender, Holly Gault will move to forward for her senior campaign. Gault has shown offensive flashes during her career with 0 goals and 2 assists. During a spring match against Yale on April, Gault recorded five goals in a KU 7-2 rout of the Bulldogs. We are sticking Holly up front and expect her to continue to play the way she played in the spring, Francis said. Plus, three of our freshmen are forwards and they are all very good. Monica Dolinsky, Kim Boyer and Shannon McCabe all have the ability to play right away. We are going to be very good up front. Returning forwards include senior Lacey Novak and sophomore Sara Rogers. Novak played in all 20 matches last year including two starts. Rogers started one game, while seeing time in 5 more. Senior Jessica Kilpatrick returns to the pitch after sitting out the 2005 season. The Englewood, Colo., native has scored seven goals and dished seven assists while starting 22 games for the Crimson and Blue during the 2003 and 2004 seasons. Midfield A plethora of midfielders return to add depth to the Jayhawks. Seniors Nicole Cauzillo and Michelle Rasmussen, junior Emily Strinden and sophomores Missy Geha, Jessica Bush and Kristen Graves all started at one point last season. Geha and Bush were both named to the All-Big 2 Newcomer Team after stellar freshmen campaigns. Geha was third on the team in minutes played, while chipping in three goals, including two game-winners. Missy was one of our most consistent players in the Fall, Francis said. She understands the role and position a lot better than as a freshman and we are looking for her to run the midfield for us. Bush set the Kansas freshman record last season with six assists. The Blue Springs, Mo., native also added four goals, including three gamewinners. Cauzillo and Rasmussen are looking to remain healthy as both have missed time in their careers with injuries. Named a co-captain for the upcoming season, Rasmussen tallied four goals and three assists last season while taking the second-most shots on the team. Season Outlook Freshmen Jackie Lewis, Meredith Monson and Libby Kramer enter as newcomers in the midfield. Defenders All defenders return to a Jayhawk squad that held its opponents to.2 goals against per game last year. Leading the way will be junior co-captain Afton Sauer and sophomore Jenny Murtaugh. Sauer played every minute of every KU match last season while Murtaugh played all but 9 ticks of the clock. Playing in the middle of the back you have to have your centerbacks work together really well, Francis said. Over the course of the fall and spring, Afton and Jenny have done that really well. Senior Nikki Alvarez started 5 games in the back last season, while also scoring the game-tying goal against No. 25 Wisconsin early in the season. Junior Kelsey Archuleta who saw action in six matches last year will help solidify the defensive unit. Freshmen Megan Jensen and Estelle Johnson are a part of Kansas solid rookie class that has the ability to compete and play right away. I'm very excited about the newcomers we have, Francis said. Those guys will be able to push and challenge to play right away and push some of the returning players. In terms of talent, this is the most talented freshmen group we've had. Goalkeepers For the second consecutive year, junior Colleen Quinn and sophomore Julie Hanley will contend for time between the posts. Each goalkeeper started 0 games last year. Quinn is an athletic keeper that posted five shutouts and a.6 GAA while seeing her first college action last year. Hanley has very good feet and distributes the ball well. The former high school All-American went 7-2-0 last season and also carried a.6 GAA. Sophomore Libby Dix from Prairie Village, Kan., joins the Jayhawks after not playing as a freshman to give depth to the goalkeeping position. Schedule Of the Jayhawks 20 regular season matches, nine will be against teams that made the 2005 NCAA Tournament. Our schedule is tougher then it was last year, Francis said. After facing Drake in an exhibition match on August 8 in Des Moines, Iowa, KU will open the regular season with a contest against Furman on Friday, Aug. 25, at 5 p.m. at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex. KU will also play Loyola-Marymount on Sunday, Aug. 27, at p.m. KU will then travel to two tournaments on back-to-back weekends. First, the Jayhawks will face the Cal Golden Bears and Saint Mary's during the Cal Invitational on Sept. and Sept. 3 in Berkeley, Calif. Cal finished the 2005 season 4-3-2 while advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The Jayhawks will face Duke of the Atlantic Coast Conference and Alabama of the Southeastern Conference during the University of Alabama-Birmingham Classic. Kansas and Alabama will play on Sept. 8 while the Jayhawks and Blue Devils will meet on Sept. 0. Kansas will return to Lawrence on Sept. 5 and Sept. 7 before playing four more road matches. KU will host Pepperdine on Friday, Sept. 5, at 5 p.m. and Central Florida on Sunday, Sept. 7, at p.m. Kansas will open Big 2 play with three-straight road matches. KU will face Oklahoma State in Stillwater on Sept. 22 and Oklahoma in Norman on Sept. 24. The Jayhawks will step out of conference play for a Sept. 29 match against Creighton in Omaha, Neb., before traveling to Lincoln, Neb., to face the Cornhuskers on Oct.. Kansas will play five of its last seven matches at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex. KU will open the stretch by hosting Texas on Friday, Oct. 6, at 4 p.m. The Jayhawks will then host 2005 Big 2 Champion Texas A&M at p.m. on Oct. 8. After traveling to Ames, Iowa, to face Iowa State on Oct. 3, Kansas will face Missouri in the Border Showdown on Oct. 5 in Columbia, Mo. Kansas will cap the regular season with three-straight Big 2 home matches. KU will host Baylor at 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, and Texas Tech on Sunday, Sept. 22, before ending the season against Colorado at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27. This year is going to be tough, said Francis. I think everyone in the Big 2 is going to be better. We have the talent to do very well in the Big 2. We definitely have a good enough squad to win the conference again, but there are a lot of factors that have to fall into Returning Leaders Points...Jessica Bush / Holly Gault...4 Goals...Holly Gault / Michelle Rasmussen / Jessica Bush...4 Assists...Holly Gault / Jessica Bush...6 Game-Winning Goals...Jessica Bush...3 Shots...Michelle Rasmussen...55 Shots on Goal...Jessica Bush...25 Minutes Played...Afton Sauer...,86 Saves...Julie Hanley...46 Save Pct....Julie Hanley / Colleen Quinn...6 Wins...Julie Hanley...7 Shutouts...Colleen Quinn...5 Co-Captain Michelle Rasmussen Co-Captain Afton Sauer Introduction 2006 Kansas Jayhawks Newcomers Coaching Staff Opponents 2005 in Review Records History 2006 University of Kansas Soccer Media Guide 7
