Here are some highlights: Market Show: March 18-22, 2013 Breeding Cattle: March 23-26, 2013 Breeding Gilts: March 23-26, 2013 Sale of Champions: March 22, 2013 Nominations have gone to $20.00 per animal. This is for all species. OYE will not be mailing the nomination kits this year. Pick up date for nomination kits include: ~Cattle, Goats and Sheep: October 19th, 2012 at Kiamichi Votech located at Atoka ~Swine: November 16, 2012 at KTC Atoka Nomination deadlines are as follows: ~Cattle, Goats and Sheep: November 1, 2012 ~Swine: December 13, 2012 Nomination kits must be paid in full when picked up If you need extra kits you must pick up at OYE office and there will be a $50 processing fee With the price increase of the nomination kits, a raffle ticket will be added. You may either keep or sell the ticket for a chance to win several prizes. McCurtain County 4-H Achievement Banquet The McCurtain County 4-H Achievement Banquet will be held on October 27th, 2012. at 6:00pm at the Museum of the Red River in Idabel. All 4-H members who completed a County or State Record Book are invited to bring their families and join in our night of celebration. We will be giving awards to record book winner, volunteers and the coveted McCurtain County 4-H Hall of Fame. If you received an invitation and are planning on coming please RSVP by calling (580) 286-7558. Hope to see everyone there! McCurtain County Speech Rally October 23rd, 2012 The Speech Rally will be held on October 23rd at Trinity Baptist in Idabel. Entries are due to the County Extension Office no later than October 10th, 2012 by 4pm. Registration will start at 4:30pm on the 23rd and contest will start at 5pm. See details on pages 5,6 &7 of this newsletter or refer to your 4-H Yearbook! There will be a First Aid Class for 4-H members who are interested in learning about first aid. The tentative date is November 13th, 2012 at a location to be determined. Watch your mail as we will send a postcard to everyone about this special class. McCurtain County 4-H Archery The McCurtain County 4-H Archery program will be having practice for upcoming activities on October 2nd and October 16th, 2012 at 5:30pm. Both practices will be located at the Phillips Arena at Garvin. Big thanks to Matt and Judy Phillips for hosting these practices. Leadership Team Meetings are set The McCurtain County Leadership Team will meet on October 11, 2012 at 5pm at the Idabel Public Library. We will be electing officers and discussing the banquet. McCurtain County Ambassador Meeting The first McCurtain County Ambassador Team will have their first meeting on October 15, 2012. We will meet at 4:00pm at the OSU Extension Office. This is a newly established group. We will be setting goals and brainstorming ideas for a project! Volunteer Leaders Meeting Set The McCurtain County 4-H Volunteer meeting will be held on November 6th, 2012 at the Idabel Public Library at 6 pm. Lesson will be about effective leadership and leadership activities for kids. Medallions will be awarded for Grand Champion and Reserve Champion in each category. All judges decisions are final. What is a 4-H Talk? A 4-H talk is a regular speech that is one means of sharing information and educating an audience about a specific subject. It is an oral presentation in which the member does not rely on posters/illustrations or objects. All illustrations are communicated through descriptions used in the speech. Basically the 4-H member paints a picture or tells a story through oral communication. What is a 4-H Illustrated Talk? A 4-H illustrated talk is another means of sharing information and educating an audience about a specific subject. It is an oral presentation in which members use posters/illustrations or objects to emphasize/illustrate specific points in the speech. A member does not actually make or demonstrate how to do something in an illustrated talk. What is a 4-H Food Demonstration? A 4-H Demonstration is a means of sharing information with an audience by showing them how to do something. In this oral presentation the member show how to make an item or complete a task. When a demonstration is finished the 4-H member will have a finished product to show. 4-H members should think of the Food Demonstration like a cooking show.
Purpose: Famous Person/Character Contest The 4-H Famous Person/Character Contest is designed to provide 4-H members with the opportunity of portraying a person or character from sports, pop culture, or history either past or present, through speeches and props. NO CARTOON OR FICTIONAL CHARACTERS ALLOWED. NO TEAMS ALLOWED Each participant will have a 4 x4 square of floor space in which to work. No live firearms. A toy gun should be used. It is expected that 4-H members ONLY portray famous people or characters of good moral and character. If props used leave behind any type of mess, for example, hay, grass, etc. the 4-H member is responsible for cleaning up their area. Extemporaneous Speech What is a 4-H Extemporaneous Speech? An Extemporaneous Speech is just like a 4-H talk with the exception that the 4-H member draws the topic to speak about when they arrive at the contest. The topic will deal with general interest subjects or 4-H. The participant has 7 minutes to organize ideas on the topic and then present the thoughts to the judges. Guidelines: Subject choices will change on a yearly basis. Each participant will draw a topic and then have 7 minutes to prepare an outline. Contestants should limit their use of notes to this outline.
