Altos n o 104. December 2012 news

Introduction from the Captain - Mr. David Markey November was a wet month in the Algarve with a tornado and storms causing a lot of damage to property. Despite the wet weather it was business as usual in Pinheiros, however our first social match against QDL on November 4th had to be cancelled due to the inclement weather. The social committee decided to go ahead with the lunch and George served up an excellent meal. Prizes were presented and everyone had an enjoyable day. I would like to acknowledge the work of the social committee and particularly Molly Wainwright for all her work, phone calls and efforts. It was interesting that every team member of QDL turned up for the lunch - a credit to the club. The match has been rescheduled for 31st January. We had the Foursomes Championship on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th. As mentioned last month I ventured into unchartered waters in playing with Mai for the first time in 10 years. It worked out better than I could have imagined, she even suggested that if I played a little better we could have won something - the cheek of some people!!! Even Peter and Jenny Harrison were at it! (playing golf together that is). Mind you the winners, Denise Reid and Alex Kirk decided to partner up because, according to Denise, Vernon was away on business! There was a great buzz in the club over the weekend and our best turnout of members participating in years. Congrats to all the winners. I would like to thank Christophe for his sterling work over the preceding days in getting the course ready after all the storms and heavy rain. The November Stableford was won by P J O Regan with 38 Pts and the November Medal by Peter Harrison with a score of 69 nett. The St Andrews Day Stableford was won by Rie Cherubini with an incredible 39 pts. Rie was playing with our Lady Captain Therese v Doorn and Jenny Harrison. Rie and PJ now join the rest of the stableford winners in the race to the K Club next year. New Years Eve Have you reserved your place at this years New Years Eve bash in Pinheiros? The theme is James Bond well it is the 50th anniversary of 007. The cost is 120 which includes Bollinger Champagne, good wines and a great menu with live music. We have a few surprises up our sleeves and as numbers are restricted I would advice you to book now! Finally, despite the challenges facing all of us, 2012 has been a good year for Pinheiros Altos golf club. We have made modest improvements to the clubhouse and course improvements are on-going. I would like to welcome some new members to the club that joined us this month and wish all of you a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year. Captain s Charity Day St Patrick s Day Make a note in your diary for Sunday March 17th, St Patrick s Day. We are running an 18 hole team event, shotgun start, with lunch afterwards to raise funds for the clubs chosen charities. It is my intention to have a silent auction on the day, a list of items will be available in the New Year. In true St Patrick s Day style there will be craic, prizes and live music. The cost will be 30 to cover lunch, wines and prizes. page 2

Director of Golf - Monthly Report Moritz Lampert who we used as our model for last months Pro Tip was on his way to the Tour School final stages at PGA Catalunya in Spain. His Pinheiros Altos practise certainly paid off when he finished 4th and guaranteed himself a high enough ranking to enable him to tee up in just about every event on the European Tour in the coming season. Congratulations Moritz. In December there will be a match at the famous TPC Sawgrass in Florida. This match between the injured Servicemen of Great Britain and their counterparts in the US is being played for the Simpson Cup. Simon Hurd, ex European Tour player and now owner of the popular DRUH belts is sponsoring the belts for both the US and British sides. We held a very successful day for the On Course Foundation at Pinheiros Altos and was able to present Gregg Stevenson with 4,300 raised by the day. Here are a few pictures. 3rd Olives We are filling in the large bunker to the right of the fairway just short of the green mainly because it is not very visible when hitting your shot to the green. Palm trees will be planted in this area. Very visible and very dangerous! 7th Olives When this green was designed and constructed it was to receive a shot from the area of the 9th tee Olives as a long par 3 which is why the green slopes away from the player when you are approaching the green. Next time you play this hole take a look at the 20 mts or so behind the green. We are going to move the green back and to the right so that the water will be very close on the right and behind. Also, the new green will be inclined toward the second shot. There will be a swail to the left of the green with three strategically placed pot bunkers. Go left of these and oleander bushes await. 4th Pines Having already planted a protective oleander back stop to the 4th green we are now preparing to remodel the right hand fairway bunker to create three pot bunkers and also plant several more pine trees to fill the gaps! page 5

Ladies Section by Thérèse van Doorn Altos News. N o 104. December 2012 November was a quiet month and the rain cancelled a few competitions. But we cannot complain about the rain and it is also remarkable how good the course recovered from all that water and the storms. The 7th November was cancelled due to heavy rain, which meant the final of the Wainwright Trophy and the Plate Competition could not go on. The Final is postponed now until the 12th December and the plate competition was played on Monday the 12th which Rie Cherubini won with a fantastic score of 39 points. The 14th November was a 4 ball better ball matchplay competition, always a nice format with a mix of low and high handicappers. The 19th November we had our return match at Pinheiros against the ladies of Benamor. I hoped for a revenge as we lost there, but I never thought we would have a 5-0 win. What a score Ladies!!! The 21st was the monthly medal, the forecast predicted rain which resulted in some early morning cancellations. Luckily it stayed dry, but there must have been something in the air because it was a quite hectic round for some players. Rie Cherubini won the first division with 75 nett and in the second division was Wendy Menzies, the winner with 83 nett. A week later we had a team game stableford. A difficult format, playing in teams of four where 2 had to score on par 5 s, 3 had to score on the par 4 s and all had to score on the par 3 s. The winners on Pines to Corks were Rie Cherubini, Linda Bentley, Josie Waddington and Adrienne Buth with 101 points. On Olives and Pines the winners were Zoe Pirret, Ann Copestake, Yvonne White and Shirley Lamb. The next day, the 29th, we had the postponed match against the Ladies of Carvoeiro. A nice group of ladies with a good mix of handicaps, so I thought it would be tough to secure a win over them. But we managed it 3 ½ - 1 ½. Well done Ladies. We will have the return match in Carvoeiro in January. Social Golf by Molly Wainwright Yet another very wet day prevented our Social Golf Competition on 4th November. What a pity! This was to have been our first joint competition with Quinta do Lago. However, not to be deterred, we had an excellent lunch and card prize draw. From the feedback I have received everyone really enjoyed it. Jorge and his team produced some excellent food. We do have a new date for the Quinta do Lago competition 31st January 2013. This is a Thursday and will be a 12 noon shotgun start. More details later. As I will be winging my way to UK when you play the next Social Golf I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Healthy 2013. Interclub by Christian Holst As reported last month we finished 3rd in our division which was won by Vilamoura. The final between Vilamoura and Alto was won by Vilamoura in what I understand was two very tight matches. As in previous years, the finals day was hosted by last year s winners Alto at Gramacho Golf on the 4th December. The league winner and runner up were then duly presented with their prizes. In addition, there was a better ball Stableford competition where each team was represented by three pairs. PA was represented by Therese van Doorn and Peter Harrison; Rie Cherubini and Philip Schofield; and finally Remo Cherubini and yours truly. I am happy to report that we won 4 points ahead of Boavista. The AGM will be held in the middle of January and shortly afterwards the fixture list for 2013 should be ready. My next report will therefore be in February. Finally, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a very Happy (golfing) New Year! page 8

Pro Tip Kenny Fairbairn Fire off right foot on downswing How to utilize a major power source Forthcoming Events December 2012 and January 2013 Sat 1st Dec Sun 2nd Dec St Andrews Stableford Many players fail to utilize the power in their legs. Through impact, it s common to see the right foot remain planted, the right knee failing to drive toward the target. This lack of lower-body movement prevents the necessary weight transfer from taking place. Imagine a balloon between your knees at address, as you swing back, keep the balloon firmly in place. You want to maintain resistance in your legs as you maximize coil. As the club head nears impact, pop the balloon by driving the right knee toward the left knee. It should gain you a few more meters.
