Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m., CT, at the Gentry Sports Center. 4 The Redhawks conclude a five-game road trip against Tennessee State Saturday. Southeast is currently 1-3 during that stretch, with its only win coming against Norfolk State (Nov. 29) at the Basketball Travelers Classic. 4 Saturday s game against Tennessee State marks Southeast s last Ohio Valley Conference matchup until the New Year. The Redhawks will play three more non-conference games (vs. Southern Illinois on Dec. 9; vs. Williams Baptist on Dec. 12; at Memphis on Dec. 22) before the Christmas holiday. Southeast then returns to OVC play at home against Tennessee Tech (Jan. 2) and Jacksonville State (Jan. 4). The Redhawks fell, 76-71, at Austin Peay. Meanwhile, the Tigers went three overtimes, before losing, 83-81, at home against Eastern Illinois. 4 The Redhawks are 16-19 all-time against Tennessee State. Southeast has lost six-straight games to the Tigers in Nashville, Tenn. Five of those six losses were by five points or less. The last time the Redhawks beat TSU on its homecourt was in 2002-03 (89-82). 4 Southeast is looking to end a 26-game losing streak in Ohio Valley Conference play. The Redhawks lost their last seven OVC games in 2007-08, before going 0-18 in league play in 2008-09 and starting the OVC season at 0-1 in 2009-10. It is currently the longest conference losing streak in the nation and longest losing streak in league history. 4 The Redhawks last OVC win was a 121-116 triple overtime victory against Austin Peay on Jan. 29, 2008. G Johnny Hill scored seven points and notched five rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench in that game. It was the only win Southeast did not have to vacate due to NCAA infractions during the 2007-08 campaign.

4 Southeast played an overtime game for the second time this season when it dropped its conference-opener, 76-71, at Austin Peay Thursday. The Redhawks are now 1-1 in overtime games this season. This year marks Southeast's first since joining the NCAA Division I ranks where the Redhawks have gone to overtime twice in their first eight games of a season. Southeast ended its 21-game losing streak with its 70-64 overtime win at Northern Illinois (Nov. 22). 4 Southeast trailed, 54-45, with 4:27 left to play in regulation before going on a 15-6 run to tie the game at 60-60 against Austin Peay Thursday. The Redhawks buried a 3-pointer on three-straight possessions in the last minute to send the game to overtime. True freshman Derek Thompson drained back-to-back treys in just 16 seconds, before Lucas Nutt shook his man to sink the biggest shot of his career to date. Nutt's three-pointer tied the game with six seconds remaining. Thompson (18) and Nutt (11) accounted for 29 of the Redhawks 33 points off the bench. 4 Four players, including Derek Thompson (18), Cameron Butler (13), Anthony Allison (12) and Lucas Nutt (11) scored double figures against Austin Peay (Dec. 3). It marked the second-straight game and fourth this season where three or more Redhawks have scored double-digits. 4 True freshman G Derek Thompson is Southeast s leading scorer with 9.9 points per game through eight games this season. Thompson, who hails from Detroit, Mich., has pitched in double figures off the bench four times in eight games. He is currently the only freshman leading his team in scoring in the OVC this season. 4 Junior G Anthony Allison has scored 10 or more points a team-high five times in eight starts this season. Allison ranks second on the team in scoring with 9.3 points per game. 4 Junior F Cameron Butler finished as Southeast s top rebounder for the thirdstraight game when he pulled down nine against Austin Peay (Dec. 3). Butler, along with teammate LaMont Russell, lead the Redhawks with 6.1 boards per game. They are currently tied for seventh among OVC individuals in rebounding. 4 The Redhawks played four games in six days last week. Southeast lost to Eastern Michigan (Nov. 24) at home before going 1-2 at the Basketball Travelers Classic in Normal, Ill. -- Lost to St. Bonaven ture (Nov. 27), Lost to tourney host Illinois State (Nov. 28), Defeated Norfolk State (Nov. 29). 2009-10 OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE STANDINGS (As of Dec. 4) SOUTHEAST MISSOURI STATE PROBABLE STARTERS No. Name Pos. The Redhawks also posted those victories on Sundays, beating Norfolk State (Nov. 29, in Normal, Ill.) and Northern Illinois (Nov. 22, in DeKalb, Ill.). 4 With their 75-54 win over Norfolk State (Nov. 29) during the final day of the Basketball Travelers Classic, the Redhawks ended a losing streak on a Sunday for the second time this season. Southeast put a halt to a three-game skid against the Spartans in Normal, Ill. Prior to that, the Redhawks ended a 21-game losing streak when they beat Northern Illinois (Nov. 22), 70-64, in DeKalb, Ill. 4 With its loss at Austin Peay (Dec. 3), Southeast fell to 7-12 all-time in Ohio Valley Conference-openers. The last time the Redhawks started league play with a win was on Dec. 6, 2007 (102-95, vs. Tennessee State in Cape Girardeau). That win, however, was vacated due to NCAA infractions. 4 The Redhawks opened league play on the road for the 11th time in 2009-10. Southeast is dropped to 2-8 (one win was vacated due to NCAA infractions in 2007-08) in league-openers away from home. 4 Southeast, which is averaging 26.1 fouls per game, committed a season-high 32 at Austin Peay (Dec. 3). As a result, the Governors attempted the most free throws of any opponent this year. APSU shot 25-of-42 at the charity stripe for just 59.5 percent. The Governors shot 13-of-24 free throws in the second half, as well. 2

4 True freshman G Marland Smith drained multiple three-pointers in four of his last six starts. A native of Little Rock, Ark., Smith made an average of two treys per game and scored double figures on two occasions in that span. He shot 4-of- 10 (40 percent) from the field and hit a pair of three-pointers en route to scoring 10 points against Eastern Michigan (Nov. 24). Smith followed that up with a career-high 13 points on 5-of-10 (50 percent) from the field and 3-of-6 (50 percent) from behind the arc against Norfolk State (Nov. 29). All of Smith s points against the Spartans came in the first half. Smith has made a three-pointer in seven-straight games. 4 Junior G Sam Pearson became the first Redhawk to score 20 or more points in a game this season when he dropped in a career-high 21 against Norfolk State (Nov. 29). Pearson scored 15 of those points in the second half alone. He also shot 58.3 percent (7-of-12) from the field, knocked down 2-of-3 three-pointers, made 5-of-8 free throws, dished out four assists and had one steal against the Spartans. One of his assists was an alley-oop pass to Cameron Butler. That play ignited a key 13-2 run after Norfolk State had pulled to within four points early in the second half. Pearson leads the Redhawks in assists (19) and ranks third on the team in scoring (8.6 ppg). 4 Junior F Cameron Butler turned in the team s first double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds against Norfolk State (Nov. 29). Butler also threw down a monsterous dunk off an alley-oop pass from teammate Sam Pearson against the Spartans. Butler became the second Redhawk to register double-digit rebounds in a game this season. 4 Southeast recorded its largest win in 34 games when it beat Norfolk State, 75-54, at the Basketball Travelers Classic (Normal, Ill.) on Nov. 29. The last time the Redhawks won by 20 or more points was when they defeated Culver-Stockton (89-50) in Cape Girardeau on Nov. 21, 2008. 4 The 75-54 victory over Norfolk State (Nov. 29) at the Basketball Travelers Classic marked the first time Southeast won by 20 or more points on the road since it beat Eastern Illinois, 84-64, on Jan. 13, 2004. 4 Southeast, which is 2-6 on the young season, needs one victory to match its entire win total from last season. The Redhawks were 3-27 overall and 0-18 in the OVC in 2008-09. Only three NCAA Division I teams, including Southeast, Air Force (0-16) and DePaul (0-18) went winless in conference play last season. 4 Southeast scored 70 or more points for the fourth time this season in a 76-71 overtime loss at Austin Peay (Dec. 3). Southeast is currently 10th in the OVC in scoring offense (59.9 ppg), but has scored 70 or more points in four of its last six contests. 4 LaMont Russell, Cameron Butler, Marland Smith and Derek Thompson currently rank among OVC leaders. Russell and Butler are both tied for seventh in rebounding (6.1 rpg). Butler is also sixth in blocks (9). Smith ranks ninth in three-point field goal percentage (41.4) and 13th in three-point field goals made (12). Meanwhile, Thompson is 25th in scoring (9.9 ppg), ninth in free throw percentage (77.3 pct.) and 13th in three-pointers made (12). 4 Southeast scored a season-high 32 points off turnovers against Norfolk State (Nov. 29). The Redhawks boasted a 32-12 advantage over the Spartans in that category. Southeast has scored 114 points off turnovers this year. Fifty-eight of those points off turnovers have come in the last three games alone. The Redhawks are forcing nearly 16 turnovers (15.9) per game. 4 The Redhawks held an opponent to 30 points or less in the first half for the third time this season when they limited Norfolk State (Nov. 29) to 25. Southeast has led at the half three times this year and is 2-1 in such games. The fewest points the Redhawks have allowed in the opening stanza were 23 at Northern Illinois (Nov. 22). 4 Southeast's 41 points in the first half against Eastern Michigan (Nov. 24) presently stand as the most the Redhawks have scored in a half this year. Southeast lost that game, 86-76. 3 GAME INFORMATION Date: Saturday, December 5, 2009 Tip-Off: 7:30 p.m., CT Site: Gentry Sports Center (10,500) Series Record: Tennessee State leads, 19-16 Coaches: Dickey Nutt (191-193 Overall, 2-6 at Southeast, 0-1 OVC); John Cooper (1-7 Overall, 1-7 at Tennessee State, 0-1 OVC). 4 The Redhawks shot a season-best 90.9 percent (10-of-11) at the free throw line at Illinois State (Nov. 28). Opponents (205) have attempted 76 more free throws than Southeast (129) in seven games this season and boast an average of +10.8 FT attempts per game over that span. 4 Redhawks head coach Dickey Nutt owns a 120-53 (.693) career record at home. Nutt won over 70 percent (120-51, 70.1) of his home games in 13 seasons at Arkansas State. He is currently 0-2 at home as Southeast s head coach. His first home loss of the season was against his former school, Arkansas State, on Nov. 18. 4 The Redhawks outrebounded an opponent for the second time this season against Norfolk State (Nov. 29). Southeast held a 38-34 advantage on the boards in that game. Opponents are averaging 38.4 rebounds per game against Southeast this year, putting the Redhawks at ninth in the OVC in rebounding defense. 4 Two true freshmen, including guards Derek Thompson and Marland Smith, have already cracked Southeast s starting five this season. Thompson started one game, while Smith has made seven starts. 4 Sophomore walk-on G KaJuan Watson made seven-straight free throws to start his Southeast career. Watson was 3-of-3 at Saint Louis (Nov. 14) and 4-of-4 against Arkansas State (Nov. 18). He made all of his free throws off the bench. 4 The Redhawks have used three different starting lineups this season. F Cameron Butler, F LaMont Russell, G Sam Pearson, G Anthony Allison and G Marland Smith started each of the last five games. 4 Dickey Nutt was named the 19th head coach in Southeast men s basketball history on Mar. 12, 2009. 4 Dickey Nutt has coached in 384 games as a NCAA Division I head coach. He is 191-193 overall in 13-plus seasons. Nutt needs nine wins to reach 200 career victories. 4 Southeast s reserves have outscored its opponent s bench in seven of eight games this season. The Redhawks own a 187-149 advantage in bench points this year. The only time Southeast did not outscore its opponent off the bench was at Illinois State (Nov. 28). The Redbirds had a 34-17 advantage in that game. 4 The 2009-10 Southeast men s basketball team consists of 11 newcomers and just four returnees. Senior G Johnny Hill, senior C/F Israel Kirk, junior F Jajuan Maxwell and senior F LaMont Russell are the four back from a year ago. Of the Redhawks 11 first-year players, only G Sam Pearson has experience playing at the NCAA Division I level. 4 The Redhawks have four attractive regional matchups on their non-conference schedule this season. Those four opponents include Saint Louis (L, 51-49, on Nov. 14), Arkansas State (L, 73-49, on Nov. 18), Southern Illinois (Dec. 9) and national powerhouse Memphis (Dec. 22). 4 Southeast has plenty of depth in the backcourt and on the perimeter this season. Of the 15 men on this year s roster, eight are guards. Sam Pearson, Derek Thompson, LaQuentin Miles, Lucas Nutt, Anthony Allison, KaJuan Watson, Marland Smith and Johnny Hill form that group. 4 Southeast is looking to snap an 11-game losing streak at home. The last time the Redhawks won at the Show Me Center was on Dec. 21, 2008 (64-63, vs. Western Illinois). 4 The Redhawks return to Cape Girardeau to host regional-rival Southern Illinois University (Dec. 9) and Williams Baptist (Dec. 12) next week. Southeast then breaks for 10 days before travelling to national powerhouse Memphis on Dec. 22. ABOUT TENNESSEE STATE Tennessee State, under the direction of first-year head coach John Cooper, fell to 1-7 on the year after suffering a heartbreaking, 83-81, three-overtime loss against Eastern Illinois Thursay. The Tigers, who opened the year on a four-game losing streak, played at home for the first time since Nov. 13. TSU has mixed and matched its starting five this season, as seven Tigers have a minimum of four starts through eight games. Josh Sain and Robert Covington are TSU s top scoring threats with 13.1 and 10.4 points per game, respectively. Sain, however, did not play against Eastern Illinois Thursday. The Tigers are eighth in the OVC in scoring defense, allowing 75.6 points per game. The Tigers are also last in both field goal percentage (38.5) and field goal percentage defense (50.7). TSU is second in the league in steals, averaging 9.8 per game, as well. Sain is tied for seventh among OVC individuals with 11 steals. REDHAWKS SNAP LOSING STREAK Southeast snapped a 21-game losing streak with its thrilling 70-64 overtime win at Northern Illinois (Nov. 22). The Redhawks, who won their first game under head coach Dickey Nutt, had the nation s longest losing streak prior to that victory. Southeast also ended a streak of 24- consecutive losses on the road and won for the first time since Dec. 21, 2008 (64-63, vs. Western Illinois in Cape Girardeau). THOMPSON NAMED OVC FRESHMAN-OF-THE-WEEK G Derek Thompson was named the Ohio Valley Conference s Freshman-of-the-Week on Nov. 23. A native of Detroit, Mich., Thompson scored a gamehigh 19 points to help the Redhawks end a 21-game losing streak with a thrilling 70-64 overtime win at Northern Illinois. Thompson, who played 41 of the game s 45 minutes, came off the bench to hit 6-of-12 (50 percent) from the field and 4-of-7 (57.1 percent) from 3-point range after entering the game 0-of-10 from beyond the arc. He made a 3-pointer in the first minute of the extra period and the Redhawks never lost the lead the rest of the way. Thompson averaged 14 points and 1.5 rebounds per game on the week. Thompson becomes just the fifth Southeast men s basketball player to win OVC Freshman-ofthe-Week honors. Guard Roderick Pearson was the last to win the award on Jan. 8, 2007. Morehead State F/C Kenneth Faried (Player-of-the-Week) and Jacksonville State G/F Trenton Marshall (Newcomer-of-the-Week) joined Thompson as this week s honorees. REDHAWKS SIGN 6-FOOT-9 POWER FORWARD WAYLON JONES The State University men s basketball program signed power forward Waylon Jones to a national letter of intent for the 2010-11 season. Jones is out of Albany Tech Community College in Albany, Ga. A native of Rocky Mount, N.C., Jones stands at 6-foot-9 and 195 pounds. He averaged eight points, 6.5 rebounds and two blocks per game in 15 starts as a freshman. Jones served as both a sixth man and part-time starter for the Titans last year. A key player during the Titans 20-win season in 2008-09, Jones is trying to let a stress fracture heal that has sidelined him until at least January. Dickey Nutt s expectations for his first year at Southeast Missouri State University are simple -- Win games, recruit men with outstanding character, and graduate young people. Nutt, who hails from Little Rock, Ark., was introduced as the 19th head coach in State basketball history on March 12, 2009. He comes from a thick coaching bloodline and brings a level of enthusiasm and passion for basketball which is downright contagious. First of all, I am very privileged to be the next coach at Southeast Missouri State University and I feel that sincerely every day, said Nutt. I believe we will build this program the right way with good young men who take a lot of pride in being Redhawks and want to obtain a degree from this university. Prior to taking over the Southeast helm, Nutt spent over two decades at Arkansas State University. He worked as an assistant coach from 1987-95 before serving as head coach from 1995-2008. Nutt compiled an overall record of 189-187 and 102-101 in the Sun Belt Conference en route to becoming the second-winningest coach in ASU history and posting the second-most career victories in the Sun Belt Conference. He guided the then-indians to two Sun Belt Conference regular-season titles (1998, 2007) and one Sun Belt Tournament crown (1999). Nutt was named the Sun Belt s Coach-of-the- Year (1998) once and National Basketball Coaches Association District 9 Coach-of-the-Year (1998, 1999) twice, as well. Utilizing his dynamic and congenial personality, strong family background and rich home-grown work ethic, Nutt accomplished what no other coach in ASU history has been able to do -- take the Indians to the NCAA Tournament. Nutt did just that when he guided ASU to an 18-12 record and its only NCAA Tournament berth in 1999. The Indians lost, 80-50, to Utah in the first round of the Midwest Regional (New HEAD COACH DICKEY NUTT 4Oklahoma State, 1982 FIRST YEAR Orleans, La.) that year. Nutt and his staff claimed three Sun Belt Conference titles. Nutt also saw 10 of his players earn all-conference honors and five garner all-tournament accolades in the Sun Belt. In addition, he had at least one player named Sun Belt Conference Player-of-the- Year, Defensive Player-of-the-Year and Newcomer-of-the-Year under his tutelage. However, Nutt s life isn t all about college basketball. His love for children and dedication to community service has prompted he and his wife, Cathy, to make several charitable donations over the years. One of the more notable donations they made was in 2001 to the local Jonesboro Parker Community Center gymnasium, a place where area kids can go to play basketball instead of roaming the streets. He and Cathy offered up half the funds if the city would match their donation to help finish those basketball courts. Nearly 500 kids - boys and girls - joined basketball teams at the community center when the project was complete. Nutt, who is also well-known for his contributions to schools and churches, is an avid speaker at a number of functions, including camps and clinics, to this day. Nutt began his collegiate coaching career at Oklahoma State under Leonard Hamilton (current head coach at Florida State) with then-assistants Tim Carter (current head coach at South Carolina State) and Bill Self (current head coach at Kansas). He also played four years for the Cowboys, who, at the time, were members of the Big 8 Conference. Nutt landed his first head coaching job at Arkansas State in 1995. He was the 14th men s basketball coach in ASU s 80-year basketball history. Before that, he spent eight seasons as the Indians top assistant coach. Nutt bears one of the most recognizable names in college basketball and comes from one of the nation s most respected sports families. He is the second of four sons to Houston and Emogene Nutt. Houston Sr., who passed away in the spring of 2005, was the longtime athletic director and basketball coach at the Arkansas School for the Deaf in Little Rock. Houston Sr., was often seen at athletic events supporting all four sons. Dickey s oldest brother, Houston, is currently in his second season as head football coach at Ole Miss. Houston also served as head football coach at Murray State (1993-96), Boise State (1997) and Arkansas (1998-2007). Meanwhile, Danny Nutt was the Razorbacks running backs coach from 1998-2006 and is presently Ole Miss Assistant Athletics Director for Player Development. Dennis was the head basketball coach at Texas State for six years and is now a scout for the NBA s Charlotte Bobcats. The Nutt coaching foursome was featured in an article in Sports Illustrated back in 1999. Dickey is married to the former Cathy Thompson of Oklahoma City and they have two sons, Logan and Lucas, and one daughter, Lexis. Logan is a junior at Ole Miss, Lucas is a freshman at State and Lexis attends Cape Central High School. DICKEY NUTT S RECORD Year School Assignment Record Conf.
