Summary of Seasearch Surveys carried out by HIWWT in 2014 in the The Needles recommended Marine Conservation Zone Seasearch surveys were undertaken at one site within the The Needles rmcz in 2014, recording piddock bored chalk reef and boulders, a Zostera marina bed on sand, and mixed sediment. Below are detailed: survey site location map, site name, date, time, location (central position of survey); number of forms done, with names of the lead surveyors, photos/videos available; and an indication of the site location accuracy. Survey site locations Survey divers British Crown and MarineFIND Ltd. All Rights Reserved. Seasearch survey divers: Gordon Bird, Amy Marsden, James Lucey, Mike Markey, Lin Baldock, Rebecca Oliver, Polly Whyte, Matt Doggett, Nigel Topham, Nick Owen, Jenny Mallinson, Bryony Chapman, Charlotte Bolton, Rik Girdler, Chris Pirie Seasearch observation divers: Sue Meakin, Justin Evans, Dawn Biggs, Kerry Evans, Dave Rawlinson, Abbi Scott, Karen Dunford, Roland Brookes, Bob Wiles, Tapani Paytaniemi, Glyn Scott, Emma Christison, David Farmer, Derek Watson, Matthew Ferguson, David Mason 1

One group with towed GPS unit. 6 divers in 3 groups, dropped in at the same start position. Heavily piddock bored chalk reef. Reef undulates into gullies with smooth base in places. Many areas with layer of silt, often filling empty piddock burrows. Start position at shot line (Deg DecMin). No end position recorded. One group with towed GPS unit, photos from these surveyors were geo-referenced (Dec Deg). No end position recorded for surveyors without a GPS unit. Scratchell s Bay 13 th June 2014. 10:47, 50º 39.575N, 01º 35.260W; 3 Survey forms (James Lucey, Lin Baldock, Abbi Scott). Photos. One group with towed GPS unit. 7 divers in 3 groups, dropped in at the same start position. Chalk reef consisting of upward facing gently sloping areas with fine layer of silt, vertical, heavily piddock bored areas, and gully bottoms with pebbles and cobbles. Start position at shot line (Deg DecMin). One group with towed GPS unit, photos from these surveyors were geo-referenced (Dec Deg). No end position recorded for surveyors without a GPS unit. Alum Bay Chalk cliffs 13 th June 2014. 13:10. 50º 39.868N, 01º 34.710W 4 Survey forms (James Lucey, Mike Markey, Lin Baldock, Abbi Scott). Photos. One group with towed GPS unit. 7 divers in 3 groups, dropped in at the same start position. Chalk reef consisting of top with dominance of Laminaria hyperborea, leading to slightly overhanging wall with boulders and cobbles at base on mixed sediment. Heavy cover of uncompacted silt throughout. Start position at shot line (Deg DecMin). One group with towed GPS unit, photos from these surveyors were geo-referenced (Dec Deg). No end position recorded for surveyors without a GPS unit. Kampen Wreck 13 th June 2014. 11:56. 50º 39.764N, 01º 36.274W 1 Survey form (James Lucey) Photos. 3 divers in 1 group, dropped in at the same start position. Piddock bored chalk reef and gullies with pebbles at base and with dense cover of mixed seaweeds on upper surfaces. Start position of buddy pair recorded (Deg DecMin). No end position recorded. Under Alum Bay chalk cliffs 16 th August 2014. 10:48. 50º 39.848N, 01º 34.936W 4 Survey forms (Bob Wiles, Abbi Scott, Karen Dunford, Rebecca Oliver). Photos. One group with towed GPS unit. 8 divers in 4 groups, dropped in at the same start position. Collection of large and pitted chalk boulders overlapping to create overhangs and crevices. Area of mixed sediment including patches of very soft mobile sediment. Cover of silt throughout. Start position at shot line (Deg DecMin). One group with towed GPS unit, photos from these surveyors were geo-referenced (Dec Deg). No end position recorded for surveyors without a GPS unit. 'Wight Spirit Patch' 22 nd August 2014. 15:04. 50º 40.402N, 01º 34.946W 6 Survey forms (Polly Whyte, James Lucey, Nigel Topham, Lin Baldock, Bryony Chapman, Charlotte Bolton). Photos and video (video footage available on request). One group with towed GPS unit. 12 divers in 6 groups, dropped in at the same start position. Large boulders and bedrock outcrops with dense rich short animal turf partially buried in mobile coarse sand, gravel, and shells. Start position at shot line (Deg DecMin). One group with towed GPS unit, photos from these surveyors were geo-referenced (Dec Deg). No end position recorded for surveyors without a GPS unit. Tinker Rock 3 rd October 2014. 11:18. 50º 41.135N, 01º 33.641W 6 Survey forms (Kerry Evans, Roland Brookes, Chris Pirie, Justin Evans, Sue Meakin, Polly Whyte). Photos. 12 divers in 6 groups, dropped in at the same start position.
