Thorney How, Grasmere Cumbria, LA22 9QW T: 015394 35597 e: enquiries@thorneyhow.co.uk w: www.thorneyhow.co.uk Directions to Thorney How Thorney How is best accessed via Easedale Road from the centre of Grasmere. Turn left Turn right Easedale Road Image Courtesy of Google Maps Page 1 of 8

If you are having difficulty you will find maps in the village at each public car park and bus shelter. Thorney How can be found on all of these maps. Simple mistakes to avoid 1) Travellers often go too far up Easedale Road until it eventually comes to an end turn around, take a left hand turn up Helm Close before Goody Bridge. 2) Relying on phones for navigation - your phone signal may not be strong enough to do this! We recommend that you print out a map! Traveling by car (heading North) From the A591 traveling north when approaching Grasmere you will first come to a roundabout junction near to the Wordsworth Trust this is signposted to Grasmere Village. Do not take this junction instead go past and take the next left hand turn 1/2 mile further on also signposted to Grasmere Village and opposite to The Swan Hotel. This is Swan Lane (B5287) leading to Broadgate. Follow this road into the village for 1/2 mile - Easedale Road is immediately on the right as you reach the centre of the village having just passed the Coop Store. The junction for Easedale Road can be found near to Heaton Cooper Gallery and Sam Read s Bookshop. Follow Easedale Road for 1/4 mile - you will go past Butharlyp How YHA, several small groups of houses and over a small bridge. This is Goody Bridge. Turn right At a junction Thorney How Hostel is sign posted right 400yds. On some maps this is Helm Close (not signposted). Follow the narrow winding and rising lane. Page 2 of 8

Keep heading up hill. There are no streetlights from this point onwards. You will need to look out for passing places, taking good care of oncoming vehicles and pedestrians. Le Tholoney You will pass several small groups of houses and woodland. Page 3 of 8

Keep going until you have passed all of the houses on your right. Helm Close The road climbs more steeply uphill again opening out with fields on your right. Page 4 of 8

Nearly there! You are about ½ mile from Grasmere village. Walking time about 15 minutes. Turn left Thorney How is now immediately on your left - an unmade track leads left for about 50yds by a Grit Bin. If you pass this track you will reach Under Helm farm and will eventually come back to the A591. Page 5 of 8

You have arrived at Thorney How Please us our main entrance, you will find our reception space just inside after passing through the small porch. If there is no member of staff attending to reception, please ring the bell for attention. Our main entrance door is unlocked from 7am to 11pm. If arriving before 3.30pm the inner porch door will be locked until we are open. If you arrive early you are welcome to park in the car park and take a short walk. Lancrigg Hotel is just 2 minutes walk along our track past Grasmere Bunkhouse. You will see the hotel, open for coffee and teas, directly in front of you. Please park with care and leave space for others. If our car park is full there is overspill parking at the beginning of the track leading to Thorney How. If you are unsure where to park please enquire at reception we will be very happy to help. Traveling by car (heading South) From the A591 approaching Grasmere shortly after the first 40 mph sign you can take a right hand turn on a sharp bend opposite a post box, un-signposted leading to a single track lane. Follow this to a small bridge. Take the left hand fork after the bridge onto another narrow lane with limited passing places for approximately ½ mile. After passing Under Helm farm on the right the road twists and drops down hill. A right hand turn leads to an unmade track leading to Thorney How for about 50yds by a Grit Bin. If you pass this track you will eventually come back to Easedale Road and into Grasmere village. Alternatively take the next right hand turn opposite the Swan Hotel sign posted Grasmere village and follow directions as for traveling north above. Page 6 of 8
