Talking Point Visiting Team "LONDON LINES" This weekend marks the beginning of a brand new season of Inter-County Darts and I would like to extend a warm welcome to the Players, Officials and Supporters of our traditional First Match' opponents, Hampshire. It also marks the return of many past associations, particularly with regard to the County's Sponsors, Watney-Truman. Those among you with long memories will recall, I'm sure, the sight of Jack Ambler 'waddling' around the centre of Birmingham in the Gold Watney shirt and the blue and white plaid trousers. Jack was stopped on numerous occasions and asked where the local circus was performing. The then London-Watney's Association became London-Watney Coombe Reid and now Watney-Truman, but whatever the name, we in London are delighted to be renewing the link with one of the country's foremost breweries. I would particularly like to thank Gerald Wolfenden and Keith McMahon of Watney- Truman for all their help and support. The new sponsorship means that the London County teams will be 'on the road' this season, utilising five different Watney-Truman clubs as home venues. Today, we are in South London and would like to thank the Committee of the Penge and District Trades Union Club for allowing us the use of their facilities. We also see the welcome return of two London Old-Boys' in Alan Glazier, who started his career with London, and Graham Parker who, in 1982, became the first County player to score 100 tons in a season. Sadly though, two long serving County Officials, Len Staal and Ernie Pettit, have decided to retire and, such was their commitment and dedication, they will be tremendously hard to replace. Everyone at the County wishes them well. So, a new season is about to commence, I hope that all people connected with London either as Players, Officials or Supporters has an enjoyable and successful nine months to look forward to. The positions attained in these League Tables are subject to the scrutiny of all Match Result Sheets. If nothing else the Mens Super League, which commences on Monday September 25th, will be an exacting one for all concerned. The League has been made into one section, comprising of 18 teams throughout the Greater London area, which means, apart from theodd natural break, a very full season lies ahead for the players. When you also consider that many of those players are in the final stages of the very successful London Summer Super League, it will have meant a full non-stop year of playing top-grade darts for most of the participants. The new Summer League really has turned out to be a bonus and thanks are due largely to the sponsor, Jim Mangan from the Victoria Hotel, Tottenham for making it all possible with a generous sponsorship of 1,000. Fittingly, the two most successful teams in the play-offs, Brentford and Enfield will contest the Final, worth 500 to the eventual winner. In the semi-finals, Brentford overwhelmed West Ham by a score of 20-5 whilst the other match was somewhat closer with Enfield coming out on top 15-10. There is a class field to be assembled in the quarter-finals of the singles worth 100 to the winner. The qualifiers are:- Robbie Widdows, Banjee Singh, Keith Wetton, Mykee Saunders, Ron Gorrie, Mick Manning, Roy Regan and Roy Simmonds. Finally, a word of congratulations to Ron Gorrie and Joe Millward, both play for Brentford, who will be the London Representatives in the All England Qualifying Round of the World Masters. ALAN FULLER MENS SUPER LEAGUE SECRETARY LADIES SUPER LEAGUE SECRETARY'S REPORT Following on from our successful policy of last year, we have now completed our pre-season round of County 'Trial' Competitions, and I am delighted to say the exercise was entirely beneficial with some potential future County players emerging, and showing the selectors their current form. The Super League, which whilst not having increased in the number of teams, looks to have recruited some excellent players which can only be of benefit, not only to the League but to the County. The recent B. D.O. decision to increase the number of participants in the A' and 'B' Team Matches from 5 to 6 may cause problems to some counties. However, I feel that in London we have sufficient strength in depth within the London Ladies Super League to turn that decision to our advantage, and we hope to capitalise on our excellent Ladies County performances of last season.
