M aryland s new home for Terrapin Athletics was completed in the fall of 2002 and has already provided six seasons of toppled attendance records and memories on the hardwood. Comcast Center provides a seating capacity of 17,950 fans for basketball games and serves as the campus site for university special events and select community events. The Terrapins first public event at the arena was the 2002 Midnight Madness celebration, which has grown to become one of the premiere student events of the academic year. The women s basketball team holds the distinction of playing the first-official game in Comcast Center, an 80-72 victory over Loyola on November 22, 2002, also the first game of the Brenda Frese Era. In each of the six seasons Maryland has called Comcast Center home, attendance for women s basketball games has soared. The Terps have ranked in the top 10 in attendance in each of the last two years and have been in the top 25 since moving to the new building. In 2006-07, Maryland made the largest single-season improvement in home attendance in the nation, nearly doubling its average from the previous season. A school-record 150,000- plus fans attended home games at the state-of-the-art arena, and surpassed that benchmark in 2008. Comcast Center has also been the site of nine of the 10 largest crowds in ACC women s basketball history. Among the top crowds are two sold-out games in 2006-07, breaking the conference s single-game attendance record, a mark held by the Terrapins. The top-notch facility was the site of the first and second rounds of the 2005 NCAA Division I Women s Basketball Championship, and was selected to host in 2008, when the tournament was expanded to eight teams at eight sites. The College Park site led all others in attendance over the two-day event. The Terrapins are slated to host the first and second rounds of the championship, once again, in 2009. Fans can also relive their memories of the men s and women s basketball national championship seasons. The arena also houses both teams crystal national championship trophies in a glassencased display on the concourse level, while the Final Four playing surfaces are prominently displayed on the arena s floor level. Comcast Center houses the university s athletic administration offices and includes a 7,000-square-foot Academic Support Center, providing an enhanced study atmosphere for the school s near -750 student-athletes on 27 teams. An additional 1,500-seat gymnasium serves as home to the Terps volleyball, gymnastics and wrestling teams. The Sprint Heritage Hall multipurpose room, which is located on the concourse level, is equipped to host banquets, press conferences, meetings and serve as the pre-game restaurant suite overlooking the competition arena, while the 20 suites provide enhanced viewing and entertainment capabilities for Maryland fans. Comcast Center is an excellent place for alumni and fans to enjoy their favorite sports and share their common Terrapin spirit. Visitors can learn about the men and women who have forged the Maryland Athletics program among the nation s elite as they stroll through the Terrapin Walk of Fame and History. The Terrapin Team Store, located just off the soaring three-level atrium lobby, allows visitors to outfit their pride. Maryland has, once again, reclaimed the status of having the best student activities center and basketball arena in the country.
