SKI CROSS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Information and Athlete Guide PROGRAM VISION To provide committeed development ski cross athletes with the opportunity to enhance their skills and progress through the athlete pathway. AIMS AND GOALS The program aims to deliver athletes to World Cup competition and achieve consistant high level results at Europa Cup, World Junior Championships. PROGRAM DATES The Program will operate in two blocks. Block 1: Commences on the 5th of November in Austria. All team members will train and race until the 23rd of December 2015. Block 2: Commences on the 3rd of January 2016 in Munich. This block will finish on the 19th of April. LOCATION The 2015/16 Ski Cross Development Program will based in Europe with a focus on training and competing at a variety of venues and competitions. The Program will base itself at each training venue for up to 2 weeks and will have extended periods in Austria and Leogang at Australia House where the National Childrens Team will be based. Many of the locations have previously been used by the Program. Staff have sound knowledge of the surrounding facilities and services available in all areas. The FIS and Europa Cup racing circuit is spread across Europe and is the main performance focus of the team. FACILITIES Throughout the season a mix of training venues will be utilised depending on conditions. The Program will have access to its own start gate which can be used in a variety of conditions (on and off snow). For physical training the team will use a mix of gyms, the outdoors and other training facilities; such as sport halls and stadiums including the AIS European Training Centre in Varese. All accommodation will have internet access and where half board is not provided cooking facilities will be available. COACHES Head Coach - Oli Lyon Hailing from Great Britain is the Head Coach Oli Lyon. This will be his 3rd year working with the team and 2nd as Head Coach. Oli is the Primary coach to all the athletes in the program and in charge of all planning and operations for the program. Oli has coached in North America for 6 years and 8 years in Australia. Oli has been involved with multiple success in Ski cross with podium results at EC, ANC and FIS races. Assistant Coach - Nicholas Kilbey The Program s Assistant Coach is Nicholas Kilbey from Great Britain. Nicholas has years of experience in alpine racing and has previously been the USA Ski Team Western Region FIS Coach and Strength and Conditioning Coach, he has coached with the Mammoth Mountain Team and Perisher Winter Sports Club. Nicholas is looking forward to working with developing Australian athletes. WHO CAN ATTEND? Athletes will be required to submit to a selection process to participate in the program. Athletes must complete the Application for Consideration form and submit relevant documents as required by the program and SSA. ATHLETE REQUIREMENTS As outlined above all Athletes are required to complete and submit the following: SSA Individual Performance Plan SSA Physical Testing (programs are held in NSW
and VIC, see website for details) Sign the Athlete Agreement (applicants will receive this form upon selection) SSA Membership, FIS Registration and International Competition License (Inc. competition and travel insurance) Further to this all applicants must be in good financial standing with SSA. complete their daily training, and abide by all team rules as set by the coaching staff. EQUIPMENT REQUIRED Athletes must provide all of their own equipment and personal items. Due to limited space in vans athletes are limited to 4 pairs of skis, two bags for personal items, clothing and ski gear and one box of tuning equipment. Any additional luggage must be authorised by the Head Coach. The program will supply all start waxes for use at competition. Additionally the program will provide a limited amount of waxes for extreme conditions such as ice and extreme temperatures. Athletes must provide their own wax for all training and racing environments as well as their own Iron and vices. The program will provide tuning tables and lights. TRANSPORT The team will have use of a 9 seater van for the winter. During the periods when the program has more than 6 athletes a second coach will join the team and drive an additional van or car. Coaches will drive all vehicles except in exceptional circumstances. Coaches will make transport arrangements for athletes if shopping facilities are not within walking distance of accommodation. Vehicle use will at all times be in accordance with the SSA Vehicle usage policy. When athletes arrive/depart Europe on dates listed by the program their airport transfer will be free of charge. If athletes wish to fly on alternative dates organisation of airport transfers will be subject to the organisation and expense of the athlete. FOOD Food/meals are not provided by the program. At some accommodations utilised by the program half board is available and is included in the accommodation fee. At times where the team is staying in self-catered accommodation athletes will be responsible for their own meals. COMPETITIONS The program will attend all FIS races and Europa Cup races where possible. Qualified athletes will be offered the opportunity to attend World Cup events, which will be at an additional expense to the athlete through the OWIA Australian Ski Cross Team. PROGRAM FEES For the 2015/2016 Northern Winter all athletes will be required to make a $5000.00 deposit in order to secure their place in the program. Payments for the winter have been broken into the following two categories: Fixed fees for the program will cover: Van rental Fuel Coach expense and salary Tolls/Ferry Gym access Ski tech Start wax Once all deposits have been received and numbers determined, the remainder of the fixed fee will be charged. The fixed fee will be calculated and prorated depending on the time an athlete is with the program. Additional Variable fee payments will be billed to athletes on a monthly basis. Variable fees - will be calculated based on actual cost and will be paid monthly. Variable fees will include items such as: Accommodation Lift tickets Race entry fees Misc. costs As the training and race schedule may vary due to snow conditions, athlete numbers and other unforeseen circumstances the variable fees will reflect any such changes. It is estimated that regardless of such changes the fixed fees will be around $2600 per athlete per month. The program aims to be run economically and will always endeavour to keep participant costs as low as feasible. The invoice for the variable fee will be sent out on the 1st of each month, the amount must be received by SSA by the 7th of the month. If payment is not received athletes will not be able
to train, travel or race with the team until payment is received. ATHLETE SERVICES Program fees include the servicing of all athletes skis in Slovenia by a ski tech 2-3 times over the duration of the winter. All strength and conditioning instruction will be provided by the Program Head coach who is a qualified Level 1 Australian Strength and Conditioning coach. Where physio is required services will be outsourced to either private practices or other team physios at additional cost to the athlete. All medical appointments and services will be at the cost of the athlete while travelling. It is recommended that athletes purchase travel insurance which covers these services. An AIS sports psychologist based in Melbourne will be available to all athletes via Skype at their own expense before and during the program. All athletes are encouraged to use this service. UNIFORM All athletes must have an Australian team uniform, such as a soft-shell or outer Jacket and team Race suit (old or new). These can be purchased from SSA see enclosed outer jacket order form. INSURANCE AND REGISTRATION All Program participants are required to be a current member of Ski & Snowboard Australia, have Alpine registration and have active Alpine and Freestyle (Ski Cross) FIS registration. If these have not already been arranged you can do so via the Ski & Snowboard Australia website (www. skiandsnowboard.org.au). To compete internationally in FIS sanctioned events it is a requirement of SSA to ensure that all Australian athletes entered have insurance that specifically covers competitive skiing and/ or snowboarding. SSA are able to provide a snowsports focused insurance policy with the additional cover for snowsports competitions. Prior to competing, athletes will also be required to purchase an International Competition License for their specific disicpline. This license is used when entering competitions overseas to ensure SSA athletes have the appropriate competition insurance and registrations. If alternative competition insurance is purchased (and proved to cover the athlete whilst competing) athletes must also confirm they have a current travel insurance policy for duration of the program. FLIGHTS It is the responsibility of the athletes to manage, pay and book all their own flights. If a specific time or date is requested by the coach, the athlete must book to arrive within a 3 hour window of that time, any longer than this and seperate transfers may need to be arranged. Please check with the program head coach before booking any flights. FURTHER INFORMATION The teams will train and travel with many other nations on the Europa Cup circuit. We especially have a good relationship with the Austrian Team, and will often have training camps together. At most training venues there will be other World Cup or Europa Cup teams, so there are plenty of opportunities to train up and evaluate the next level of competition. EQUIPMENT SHIPMENT SSA will be using a shipping container for all program equipment in Europe. Participants are welcome to use this service at their own cost. The cost to ship items in the container works out to be approx $7 per kilo. All skis should be shipped with all ski gear and tuning equipment on the date provided for by the Head coach. Alternatively athletes can take equipment with them on their flight however higher costs will be incurred. All athletes when ever flying must carry their Boots at all times.
